Well I parked at Earls tonight to go in for supper. As I was waiting in my car for my friends to show up, I went and tried to move my car( 1991 Ford Escort winter car) to get closer to the resturant after someone had left. It would'nt start with the key. But I pushed the clutch in it started. ( without turning the key) So I thought that was a little strange but continued to try and back my car out. i pushed my clutch back in and and it made the grinding noise as if it was trying to start again.

I assume its a relay that is frozen shut(fuel cutout switch) or somthing of the sort.

Anyone know if theres a tempary fix so i can get it home?

Let it start, then let it idle, shouldn't keep trying to start if your not clutching, so it'll warm up, unfreeze the relay, and go?

Iunno, that's what I got from it.
Push it so a plug, plug in the block heater?
Those seem like some solutions to warm up the relay, if not trace it down, replace it.

Not sure here, but starters trying to engage, and needs the clutch pushed in, so everytime you push the clutch it trips the switch, alowing the starter to go..? which may point to the ignition

thats what I was thinking, I bet your Ignition froze to the start position and whenever you pushed the clutch in it engaged the starter cct.
funny thing is that my 1993 escort used to do that too.

Escort = exorcism?

Would it not be an escortcism in this case?

Check for recalls on the ignition switch. Ford is famous for bad ignition switches leading to fires. They have a load of vehicles with ignition switch recalls.

Id recommend selling that car for whatever you can get for it.

Sounds like the ignition switch itself has failed in some way. it is leaving the 'start' contact engaged. I doubt that they would have a relay in that circuit since it only runs the starter solenoid.
That said, you could try taking each relay that says anything at all related to ignition/starting out one by one. See if any click when removed. Also try shaking each of them a little bit too, might free them up if they are stuck.
Other than that, try turning it to 'start' again and see if the switch starts to work correctly.

I assume that the key was in the 'run' position when the engine suddenly started?
Also, do you normally have to press down on the clutch pedal to start it?
