nickosil or Alusil?

I own a 98 BMW 540i and I was always under the impression that they stopped using nickosil in 1996, However im starting to here this is not the case and I know that if you have nickosil your car can be like a ticking time bomb. So my question is how does one go about finding out whether your car has nickosil or alusil.

yours is an e39 so it is not affected

Only the '95 and below have this problem (there was no '96 5-series)
