Whats better, sanding down to original undercoating and painting or sandblasting and powder coating?

My factory 18's cost me around $100 a wheel at Top Gun Coatings. That was stripping, coating and clearcoat.

That reminds me, I think they are done, i should probably pick them up. :D

Just spoke to Jim , he said clearcoating is not necessary for powder coating. any ideas?

wow! at that price you can put the money towards another set of rims and get the color you want.

You can have the shine built right in with Powdercoating.... or you cna get a a matte finish, or a crinkle finish etc etc. You don't need a clearcoat because you're not protecting anything... the powdercoat itself is pretty tough. A lot more durbale than paint. I don't know if they heating process might affect the strength of some kinds of wheels though?? Check into it.

$100 per wheel is actually a pretty decent price for the stipping as well.

I wouldn't bother doing any prep work yourself, it might just add work instead of helping. Most Powdercoating requires some sort of media blast anyhow beforehand to prep.

It was a matte finish I was looking for, and the color I choose was very shiny, so I got a matte clearcoat applied...

I love the stock 18" wheels on my X-Runner, the shape of them matches the lines of the truck... if I was to get aftermarket gold/bronze wheels, I would want gold/bronze Volk TE37's in 20". Definately way more expensive that $100 a wheel. So I powdercoated the wheels to get a different look. Maybe the Volks will come in the future.

Powercoating can crack if your wheels have any flex (i.e. wheels with any dish).

I would stick with paint as it tends to be a bit more flexible.

Na, never heard of this. Powdercoating far more durable anyways.
