can you guys tell me if htis is a good deal:

a 2001 bmw 525i with 60,000kms for 22,000 dollars (cad) , i am wondering do you think the person changed the odometer or something because 60k is low for a 2001 car, and also if it's a good and reliable car ( i am planning to use it for another 5-6 years at least) especially in canadian winter.

like what mechanical parts usually go wrong ?

Thanks,

It's very hard to roll the km's back in the newer bmws, because the mileage is stored in 3 separate places (the key, the light control module, and the cluster). If you want to check it out, take the key to the dealer and have him see what the mileage is. Chances are that the km's are correct if the key and the LCM both read correctly.

In most cases, if the car senses a discrepency of more than 120miles in one of the three places, the mileage tamper light will indicate that something isnt right.

What mechanical parts go wrong? LOTS. If you want a reliable car, look for an Accord or Camry. These cars aren't reliable at all, and not cheap to fix if you have to pay someone to do it.

Personally IMO, if you are looking to have something around for the next 5 to 6 years, start with something newer.... that car will be 10 years old in only 3 years. Mileage is low, but still...... you're going to get into the expensive parts to replace in no time.

60k isn't really unusually low for a 2001, I got a 2002 vehicle with 67k, the person could have had a second vehicle and drove it only on certain days or in certan weather?

5 Series beemers are rock solid cars in every way. Only common problem is a radiator which is cheap to fix. That inline 6 is an awesome motor and you'll never have any problems with it, but it will not be a fast car. It's like anything, if you take care of it, it will be reliable, if you beat the shit out of it, it will break no matter what it is. My dad has a 2000 540I and not even ONE SINGLE problem with it in 7 years. They are built extremely well - zero problems with ours. It has been the most reliable vehicle we've owned, and we had a camry from 1989-2002 (won it at a car show in 1989 lol) Not a single creak or any sign whatsoever that it isn't brand new.

Lubrico warranties are worthless. If you don't adhere to a strict maintanence policy as they dictate, the warranty is void.

so based on your recommendations, is it better for me to buy a 2003 bmw320i ?

like which bmw is the best in value right now and will last at least 4-5 years, and would cost less than 25,000

thanks

I'd go with the five series. You shouldn't have a single problem with it if you take care of it. Its a bigger car with more features - if that's important to you.
