Can i just copy my firefox dir and the profiles dir in application data, re-format/re-install XP, install firefox, and then copy over all my profile info (same profile name in the new install)?

This is what I like to do whenever I reinstall a hard drive, or a couple times a year as a backup. Find your firefox install folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

Copy the entire contents of the directory, and back up on a usb drive or something. After you reinstall just go back to that folder and paste/overwrite all the files with what you backed up.

Has worked remarkably well in the past for me, exact replica of firefox with all the themes, extensions, bookmarks, without any problems.

All you need is key3.db and signons.txt from the >docs and settings>username>application data>mozilla>firefox>profiles>yourprofile> (that's only for the passwords)

^^ I think it gets more complicated with history / cookies if you want to keep it compatible
