Although the Touareg TDI does pwn hardk0re I was reading that this kind of stunt is bullshit because with the proper gearing ANYTHING can pull that plane. Anyone care to comment on this?? I don't have the mental energy right now to even think about the forces involved.

Oh damn how I wish I had a Touareg TDi. They are so freaking quiet, even I had a hard time figuring out that I was standing next to one in a parking lot. It just burbles. blub blub blub. I didn't hear a single "diesel'ish" noise.

I'd like one of those. prolly cost as much as a range rover though

yeah.. Like 155 tons, and the vw prob weighs, 8-10 ton? I don't know, but likely.. what tons do they use? 1000 or 2k lbs?

so a 300lb strongman, pulling a monster truck, say 10,000lbs?

33x his weight, to 15 times the vw's

ha.. I dunno, just playing with numbers.. But I would assume near any truck would pull that..

i bet you the any superduty could pull 2 of them

the CXT could tow the hanger with a plane in it.

A ton is a 1000 kg. Never heard of it used otherwise.
I don't know if you ever pay attention to those little cart like things that push back jets at the aiport they do it with ease and they are tiny vehicles :dunno:

Had to go look at tons again, for some reason I was thinking a us ton was 1000lbs, and a metric was 2k.. Where as it's 1000kgs...

1 tonne = 2 204.622 621 849 pound, 1 000 kilogram
1 ton [short, US] = 2 000 pound, 907.184 74 kilogram
1 ton [metric] = 2 204.622 621 849 pound, 1 000 kilogram
1 ton [long, UK] = 2 240 pound, 1 016.046 908 8 kilogram

so that would make the vw 5 tons (6500lbs + did they say 4500 lbs of weight? or so) making it 31x it's weight... I don't know how the specs work on rolling weight on wheels vs actual dead weight (such as how a truck pull works) gettting the intial pull to start, then your rolling with it.. the funny part would be getting it to 20km/h and trying to stop suddenly..

Yep, and some of them are only 4 cyl diesels. It looks far more impressive than it really is to tow an airplane.

If the Calgary Flames can shove an airplane around, I should hope that a Touareg could!

They are usually 8L 6cyl engines with 800lb ft of torque (not to mention the short gearing).

Touareg is 5L with 553lb ft (750ish Nm)

that is still quite impressive that the transmission actually held together, you could actually see the front tires still fighting for grip... that guy is the only presenter i like on 5th gear all the others suck Clarksons' balls.

ya its one of those things that appear MUCH more impressive than it actually is, the plane big, but hollow and made of the lightest material possible, and weighs only about 30times the sand he has in the car...
and arent there people in the guiness book that can do it, probably smaller plane but still

I think the world record for a man pulling a 747 is over 100 feet.

So the VW pulling it is nothing special.

Also, what's with the B-52 type engine pods and external tanks?

I'd bet that 747 is gutted to the max as well.

A Chinese guy on world record pulled a trolley with his ear...

Didn't some dude pull a plane too? Gotta get that inertia going lol

Weighed 155 tonnes. The plane was NOT gutted.

"The result was an ex-British Airways Boeing 747-200 weighing 155 tonnes. The aircraft, first flown in 1980 and retired last year retains its full complement of 500 seats, 11 toilets and complete landing gear, albeit without an operating braking system. The original engines were removed last year to make way for dummy items used in the filming of a recent motion picture. Despite this, the aircraft still weighs 155 tonnes, due in part to the 28 tonnes of water held on board in the fuel and nose tanks."

Yes, but the toureg used the stock low range gearing.

I wish the Toureg TDI wasn't so damn expensive.
