isn't that a made up thing from seinfeld?
Originally it was a festival made up by the father of one of the creators of Seinfeld and it was the subject of an episode. Apparently, the holiday has now been embraced by many and now has many followers.

It's really not any more ridiculous than celebrating the gruesome death of an alleged 2000 year old superhero.
