The other day I was talking with this older guy that was born and raised in Calgary, and he was from signal hill.. but long story short I asked him what those huge stone numbers mean that are facing south, that overlook the Westhills shopping complex.

(you know those random numbers on the hillside written in white rocks)

Apparently up until the 1950's or 1960's... the whole Westhills area was actually a training ground for the Canadian Forces, along with the barracks that once stood just west of the Sarcee & 37th street intersection.

When Calgary grew, the whole area was cleaned up of all the Military buildings, shells and "fox holes" to make way for the new development (whereas the Suffield airforce base east of Medicine hat now continues the training operations).

Those huge white numbers are actually the "Birgade" numbers, that were placed there to commemorate the battalion for later years.

I found a pic on Google Earth, but I can't seem to provide a link, so I'll write down the cordinates, that just need to be copy & pasted.

Zoom out a bit, and click map (rather then satellite view) look east, to the sask border and see that grey spot above medicine hat? I assume thats military? if you zoom in on the grey spot and go back to sat. veiw, its all huge circles.. looks pretty strange...

I was going to go look for pools when I found this..ha.. If you look over some cities in ontario or around montreal theres TONS of pools.. its amazing when you fly over, every house has a pool..

there it is.. it has to be 30km's across... So if it's military, is it a target? I thought the missle ranges and stuff tended to be far north, and not right next to a city...
