Yeah, I can't wait for the MKIV's to be eligible for import. A nice mint low KM 6speed, TT with a Targa top and a TRD body kit

True that. A MKIV Supra isn't exactly a supercharged Jaguar that Granny Geriatric bought so she could get the heated leather seat package.

I was hoping for that too, but I remember asking that same question on www.supraforums.com and most people said that it wouldn't alter the LHD price excessively. The LHD cars will always fetch a higher premium. I know RHD cars definately have they're disadvantages that scare off a lot of buyers.

But the JDM KMIV isn't as good as the North American ones. I forget the details of the comparison, but the fuel intake components aren't as beefy, so there is a HP and 1/4 time loss.
Its not like it matters though since those are usually the first things to be replaced on these cars

They run a 440cc injector as opposed to a 550cc injector, they have ceramic blades on the turbos as opposed to steel, and they're MAP based as opposed to MAF based. Those are th eonly differences, but yeah, they do make slightly less power, and have slightly less power potential on stock turbos/fuel system.

Wow I didnt know that...440cc? Which means the rail and pump are smaller. The only good thing about it is the map but wow...a rhd version isnt worth 10K imo

Just so all you guys are prepared......if you do not want to drive an auto supra and plan to do a conversion, my conversion cost me almost 10,000 and a got the tranny at cost.

If you do go with an auto and want to keep it auto i would definetly change the injectors, fuel rail and the turbo...those ceramic blades scare me. (especially 15year old blades) and you must go with the boost logic Auto tranny with a 3000 rpm torque converter and no 6sp driver will take u on a drag (Crazy shit)

Good luck with importing.

I imagine we'll see many supra's amongst calgary once they become legal.
It will be difficult to find a specimen 3 - 3.5 grade with a 6 speed transmission * Correct me if manuels are 5 speed *
However they will be around and at a very respectable price.
Now they won't be as cheap as most vehicles through japan.
GTR's, RX7's will be in a completel different ball park price wise * allot cheaper *

however spending 20,000 on a supra from japan is Worlds cheaper then anything you can find here. The average twin turbo Supra runs 30 - 50000 depending where you buy it from and the condition its in.

I think supra's would be one of the smartest alternatives to import vehicles because the engine is so bloody strong and will last a good while with less maintanence then some of its rivalries.

look at the rx7, very cheap price, awsome car but is a money pit.. even more so if you don't spend 6 grand rebuilding the rotary the day it reaches shore from shipment.

yep it would appear that the fuel system is far superior in the usdm Supra making the jdm one not so tempting anymore.

Hey Dont let this discourage you.. If you love the vehicle just go out and buy it, if you have the money to fix problems when they occur you'll do so without a second guess because you love the vehicle.

I myself wanto get a FD3S next year or the year after for my summer sports car. I could care less that I must rebuild the engine, and spend lots of money to fix her up. Because I love the vehicle and in the end, the means justifies the money spent!

^^ You will not find a 6 speed TT for under 25kUS.... The autotraders are usually salvage , wrecked , crashed , NA , NA-T with 5 speed.

As for the JDM Supra , the rods are weaker , different turbos , fuel rail.. and a few more things i cant think of. If you think you can just change them over to US spec . You will have fun emptying your pocket , NOTHING is cheap on this car.

If your looking to upgrade your Auto to 6 speed. Your going to be spending close to 10k.

JAYMEZ
01-19-2007, 09:05 PM
MKIII & MKIV's turbos are casted by Hitachi, but Toyota machined and assembled the unit themselves. MKIV in Japan is really rated at 280HP thanks to a different intake cam profile which designed for low-mid range torque. The turbo sizing is also different, Japanese uses ceramic turbo for quicker spool up. Here is the literature about the difference between Japanese and export models.

2JZ- GTE Jap/Export

Intake Valve dia (mm) 33.5 / 33.5
Intake Valve lift (mm) 7.8/ 8.25
Exhaust vlave dia (mm) 29.0/29.0
Exhaust valve lift (mm) 8.4/8.4

Valve Timing

Intake opening (degBTDC) 3/3
Intake closing (DegABDC) 41/50
Exhaust opening (degBBDC) 52/52
Exhaust closing (degATDC) 4/4

Turbo chargers

Turbine material Ceramic ,Steel
Turbine dia. Large/small ends (mm) 60/48 ,52/44
Compressor dia. Small/Large ends (mm) 39/62 , 39/58
Scroll Area (mm^2) 600/ 740
A/R ratio (mm) 10.7 /13.5

Power output

HP 276 / 315
Torque 318@3600/ 314@4000
Traction/Throttle Control ETCS** TCS***

*Europen HP is higher(325HP) due to higher octane gas

**ETCS - Electronic throttle control system "drive-by-wire", it has two modes, one for high surface friction, and one for low surface friction or "snow" mode for people who own 97TT. Yes, 97TT has ETCS or "drive-by-wire". This would explain the reason why my traction control system doesn't work when I installed pre-97 ECU in my 97TT.

***TCS - Conventional throttle control system, not as exotic as "drive-by-wire", but still able to control the throttle and applies rear brakes when needed.

Both ETCS, and TCS have mechanical cable operates the main throttle valve to ensure reliability and fail-safe operation incase the system fails. Toyota called this "robust" design. And both can be cut off by a console-mounted switch.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would also like to ADD that the reason I am so negative about most these threads is that I have actually met about 25 people who always say "Yah im selling my car and getting a Supra soon , blah , blah , blah" NONE have.

Jaymez is right, RCTS had a customer bring his up from new zealand for the Newfoundland rally and just he had to redo the whole entire fuel and air compartments.....which is serious coin,
Normally to get your supra to BPU+ status is not much money, but starting with a JDM model....well lets just say you better have extra cash

If you plan to import one now is the time to find the parts..becuase when these JDM supras get here these parts will go fast.

But lets be honest, importing a car from japan and not having the coin to fix it up is just stupid.

As for supra's in calgary there is a bunch of them however the average owner is 40+ years old and they just like to look at them sit in their garage. (there is always atleast 2 supra's at a time at rcts being worked on so they are around)
