woo, just picked up my new Canon EOS 30D today, i was shooting with a Fujifilm Finepix S20 pro for a year and, that did the job to get my foot in the door, but now it was time to upgrade :D still rockin the 18-55 that comes with it, but i plan on upgrading, i think it should be a good lens for just everday shooting, ill prolly pick up a lens or 2 next paycheck, any suggestions what i would get the most use out of, im really interested in a wide angle lens, and a fisheye would be sweet to have too.

as for filters, im ordering a CP filter and im trying to figure out what filter was used when someone from this forum took a picture of the city and it was all white i dont know what filter that is but i wanna know!, everything in the picture was white pretty much, like snow covered, but the pic was taken in summer. if anyone knows let me know too :)

ill have to come for a few photo meets soon, ive just been so busy lately

The Canon 10-22 is a great wideangle lens, not sure what to recommend for a fisheye.

The Canon 17-85IS seems to be fairly popular, I would likely buy that and then a macro and telephoto lens, but I don't know what to reccomend for the others. The Canon guys here are very helpful.

Very nice choice in camera, get some pics up ASAP.

I'm guessing that the white city picture was done with an IR filter. This picture look familar, I took it. I killed the EXIF data that goes along with it but if you want more information just PM me and I can try to help you out.

I used a Hoya R72 Infrared filter.

The camera store has this version and they get more expensive from here.

Congrats on the 30D, I imagine that you are going to enjoy using it a lot. Its a great camera.

Peleng 8mm for a Fishy!

However, I find that fisheye lenses don't get used very often. They are a lens you only use once and awhile, I would only recommend getting one if you have the spare cash to blow, or if you can find one for cheap..

As for a couple recommendations:

Ideally, a Canon 10-22 matched with a Canon 28-300 will give you some SERIOUS room to work with... but at a crazy cost..

Realistically, and probably most the best bang for the buck would be:

Canon 17-85 IS (http://www.thecamerastore.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=31338), as mentioned earlier

and

Canon 70-200mm f/4L (http://www.thecamerastore.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=23207)

and because they are so cheap, yet yield very good photos, you may be interested in picking up a Canon 50mm f/1.8 (http://www.thecamerastore.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=23145)

Have fun!

Yeah, the Peleng is great if you're willing to manual focus your lens.

I agree that fisheyes don't get used all that often, I'd personally get a telephoto before a fisheye.

is that worth buying? or should i hold out for a diff telephoto?

im set on the IR filter, im picking one up next paycheck, and a wide angle lens, ill browse through some tonight, see which fits my needs best, but if i want just a telephoto that will suit me for now, would that do?

and seer_claw thats exactly the one i was talking about :) looks wicked you will have to pm me the info on how to do that :D

Thanks guys, and like i said i hope to be at future photo meets providing i get a day off from work sometime :nut: its hectic at the shop this time of year

I'm honestly not a fan of the 75-300. I don't use it on a daily basis (obviously, being a Nikon guy and all - but I have tried it a couple of times), but even the FredMiranda reviews place it very low in terms of build and optical quality. Slow aperture, slow focus, cheaply built. Basically, you get what you pay for. That being said, it does take photos! If you can stop it down to F8 and use it on a tripod, it should work fine. That's a pretty tight restriction, though.

If you don't want to spend much on a tele, I would recommend the Sigma 70-300 APO over the Canon. It's a bit bulkier, marginally better built, but it has better image quality. It's not super fast either, but I feel it's an all-around better lens. If you're looking for outstanding optical quality, the Canon 70-200 f/4L USM is a well-regarded lens.

Basically, telephoto quality is directly proportionate to the size of your budget. How much were you realistically looking to spend?

I would recommend the Canon 70-200 f/4L. At the price they are going for right now I seriously doubt you would be disapointed. The old saying is that you get what you pay for. And if you plan on having the Canon for a while then go big now and save yourself buying the better lense later.

true, i think i will save up for the 70-200 F/4L i checked all the reviews and it looks like an amazing lens, now for a nice wide angle, i want something thats going to give me a nice crisp image, and seeing as im going HQ on the telephoto might as well do it for the rest eh? i plan on having my equipment for a very long time, so like u said, in the long run its better just to spend the money now and BCS suggested the 10-22 lens for wide angle so thats covered, but im still wondering about a fisheye, it definately takes some interesting photos but like u all said, it gets rarely used so do u guys think its worth it to get it at all?

I would shoot with normal lenses for a while, and if you feel the burning need for a fisheye then buy it. Fisheye lenses tend to be one-trick ponies, but they can be used in interesting ways if you know how to get results from them.

An 10-22, 17-85IS, and 70-200 f/4L would make a great all-around kit to start out with, then you can start adding specialty lenses later, when you figure out what fits your shooting style the best.

that sounds like a splendid idea BCS :P lol i really wanna get my hands on that IR filter, but i need a 67mm lens first as the 18-55 lens is only 58mm and they dont make an IR filter for it, unless there was an adapter i missed :dunno:

BerserkerCatSplat
01-15-2007, 12:36 AM
Yep! It's called a step-up adapter, you just need to get a 58->67mm step-up ring and you can use the 67mm filter on your 58mm lens!

Here's one 58-67 ring:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/58mm-67mm-58-67-Step-UP-Filter-Ring-Stepping-Adapter_W0QQitemZ300070125822QQihZ020QQcategoryZ67358QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here's a whole set of them:

I wouldn't call them expensive, either. :D I'm not sure what they're worth locally.

I'll try to PM you the information on how I did that. I also have a word document on how to post process in photoshop after you have taken the pictures. They turn out red right out of the camera so there is a fair bit of work after to get it looking like I did.

For wide angle zoom ...

as everyone said, Tokina 12-24 F4 is awesome, good fit and finish, light weight, fast focusing, great colour! and low price! you can google this lens, awesome!

Tokina will offer a new 10-17mm soon, with fisheye as well! I am guessing ~ $550-600US .. ( so ~$700-750 + GST after shipping or may be duty ) should be avaliable in spring/summer time for US.

Too bad, Canon doesn't offer a real fisheye lens for 1.6x camera yet ... I am using the nikon 10mm fisheye on my 20D ! :D

Sigma 8mm fisheye will be a good choice too, it is not a full fisheye, just a circle fish eye, however, with 1.6x, ~ 13mm fisheye will be nice too!

Hey dood.

Congrats on the new cam. It's awesome.
The 17-85 is a nice lens. If you want something even sharper and better the 17-55 is killer. It's my favourite lens. And the 10-22 is awesome too.

In regards to the 75-300 III USM... I don't see a problem with having one. I have one and I think it's a fantastic lens.
You can buy them used all over the place. I bought mine for $100 at a local camera shop. I have a 70-200 F/2.8 IS too but I am unwilling to let go of the cheap 75-300 as it's images are great, and it's small and light. Great for traveling. I've gotten many excellent images out of it. If you want I'll send you some samples. You gotta remember that a lot of these 'internet photographers' (like on fred miranda) are gearheads more than actual photographers. They are just itching to bash products, so take any of those user reviews with a FEW grains of salt.

And my personal opinion of the 50mm 1.8 is that it sucks. (again, take it with a grain of salt)
The focus accuracy in lower light is horrible. The design of the lens is optimized for SHARPNESS ONLY.
Aberrations are not well controlled, and it has the most HORRIBLY UGLY bokeh (out of focus areas) you can find.
If you want one, buy mine for $75. LOL

As for infrared... I have a 67mm Hoya R72 I used with the 17-85 on my 20 and 30D cameras. They have an internal IR blocking filter in the hotmirror so IR photography is quite annoying. You HAVE to use a tripod as your shutter speeds will be 5 seconds at the FASTEST, on the brightest of days. And you'll have to compose the image, focus, and then put the filter on, and then take the shot using mirror lockup. If you are using f/16 or higher for a landscape (typical) then prepare to wait at least 30 seconds for each exposure. It blows, but it's possible.
If you're still interested, I have a Hoya R72 for sale too... $100.

My wife just bought the 16-35mm f/2.8 L-series Canon lens.

She also has the 10-22mm but the new lens blows it out of the water in terms of clairity.
