Does anybody know of any places that sell contemporary/modern/urban furniture in Calgary?

The ones I've been to and bought from are Sojourn, Home Evolution, Koolhaus, Revolve and Block.

Are there any other nice places that people have been to?

what kind of stuff are you looking for Contemporary or Modern. There is a difference. Modern refers to the era of designers from the Bauhaus designers like:

Bruer
Le Borbusier
Mies van deer Rohe and others
Some people call these "the classics"

Contemporary is just new furniture that can be just about anything.

These guys make some really nice stuff that isn't too expensive. They also have a stocking program for quick ship in California.

There are out of Italy. We carry ythe line even though we aren;t a retailer. We do contract office furnishings. I've bought some of this stuff and it is really nice.

Home Evolution used to sell it but they have changed their product offering to manufacturers from Asia. They did it to bring costs down but they didn;t exactly pass those saving on to the customer.

Other stores to consider would be Killian's in Kensington.

Its hard to tell you an exact place without knowing your exact needs and style.

When you find something you like, find out who the manufacturer is first. Then check their site for the local Rep. Quite often you can cut a deal with the rep (if they have one in Calgary) rather than buy retail.

There is a place in Mount Royal on 17th Ave SE...I can't remember the name...but its in the same shopping complex as the Met.

I picked most of my furniture for the house from Caban (when it was open), EQ3, Pier 1 and metroelement on Edmonton Trail.

I find EQ3 is more of a retro look to it....so I didn't find too much as that was not the look I wanted. Metro and the store on 17th have more modern, asian-inspired pieces.

Home Evolution has a lot of nice things too, but pricey!

Believe it or not, I took a look at Sears Home yesterday and they also had quite a selection of modern items.

I'm not too familiar with designers, but I do like some of the stuff Sitcom makes. We got the Leather Edo Chair from them, which was available at Koolhaus. I really like the stuff at Koolhaus , so that's sort of the stuff I'm looking for. www.koolhausdesign.com (http://www.koolhausdesign.com)

I like designs that are clean and simple. Nothing too funky. It's kind of hard to describe.

We bought the same house model as the one below, and we like how it was furnished

I bought my sofa and loveseat from Revolve, near Deerfoot Meadows.

The service and stuff was great up to the point of delivery. There was some damage we found afterwards, and it's been hell trying to get them to exchange the furniture. So far, it's been 3 months. :thumbsdow

Which community is your Sabal home in? We built with them in 2004 in Copperfield. Liked their designs and floorplans over the other builders in the area at the time.

I think there is a place on 11th called Killian... You can get Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe (Barcelona chair!) and maybe even some Charles Rennie Mackintosh there....Not cheap, but if you are looking for good modernist furniture it will be difficult to get it while keeping the purse strings tight.

There is a website for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London out there somewhere... It is dedicated to the display of trade/arts/crafts for the last few hundred years. They've had special exhibitions for modern and art-deco collections... Might find some inspiration.

Check out the furniture/architecture sections and browse the past exhibits...lots of cool stuff there.

Ours in up north in Creekside. By far they have the nicest designs out of any homes I've seen. Most of the other homes we looked at were traditional, and they all looked the same. Sabal were the only ones that stood out and were very different. I like the open floor plans.

Have you checked out their new showhomes in Copperfield? I've seem them on the website and they look really nice.

Killians sell reproductions...not original production pieces.

We also had a very bad after sales experience from Revolve, I'd recommend staying away from them.

BoConcept, 11th ave by Amsterdam Rhino. Everything they have is fully customizable, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny.

I've checked out Revolve, and EQ3, and KIYA in Cross Iron. I just looking for a simple looking fabric sectional. Is it normal that I find these places really expensive? Im aiming for something in the price range above ikea but below those three places i checked out. When i was out in montreal you can get some really good modern looking sectionals for a really good price, like just a bit more than ikea. Do we have any places in that price range in calgary?

If you don't mind knock-offs. There is a place (based in Vancouver I think) called Eternity Modern. I've ordered two pieces from them. Yes I can tell that they are knock-offs but they aren't that bad especially for the price. I would be leary though of anything made out of wood. check them out.

hrmm yea.. furniture is one thing i know very little about.. and even less about designer furniture. In terms of quality would those replica's be bad??

Lex350
07-26-2012, 02:18 PM
I have both so this is how i would put it. An original (or licensed reproduction) is like a Mercedes. The fit and finish are top notch and consistant. The knock-offs are like a Dodge. It may work alright but you can tell the difference. There is quite a difference between knock-offs. There are some good ones and some bad. If you are looking at a simple design with metal and leather for finishes then it probablay won;t be that bad. The leather won;t be a top notch full grain but it might do. Anything with wood as a feature I stay away from with knock offs.

While we were looking for artwork, we stumbled upon F2 furniture, located at the corner of 11th St & 11th Ave SW (across from Co-op). We didn't buy any furniture here, just the art, but did appreciate their designer furniture for lower pricing than most of the other places we had visited. Prices were lower than others for artwork too! We'll likely be making them one of our first choices for furniture when we're in the market for it again though.

Check out NASource Imports. They are a small store near the deerfoot casino, but they sell to a lot of the stores in Calgary and will also sell retail.
