I would have upgraded, but with shaw throttling torrents there's no real point. I was able to download over the cap on xtreme anyways... extreme should be capped to about 1250K down about 180K up... I was able to download two big files from two web sites at over 2000K solid for the entire file lengths... it was pretty nice. I was getting 1200K for the new nvidia driver and 800K from fileplanet.

My buddy does a lot of transfers and has it and says its wicked though.

I have it at the computer shop I work at, it is very nice.

They wouldn't let me upgrade to it because I had a static IP address.

Shaw has been throttling torrent downloads? Ah no fucking wonder they've been going so slow for me...

I have Shaw Extreme, are there any download limits? I just started downloading 720p and 1080p TV/movie torrents so now I'm downloading about 150-200GB a month and uploading around 100GB... haven't gotten a call yet but I'm worried they might slow down my connection or something.

Is there any way to get around them throttling torrent downloads? My total download speed for them is around 100K/s...

Get BitComet and you can encrypt the packet headers to get around the Shaw bandwidth throttling.

also you can use utorrent and change the port once in a while to throw them off.

Really? It's likely the sites you're downloading from don't go that fast.

go here:

http://support.shaw.ca/troubleshooting/speedtest2.htm

10Mbps / 8 = 1,250KBps (aka 1.25MBps) is the speed you should be getting. If not, book a service call.

Nitro should get 3.125MBps off this same speedtest.

Normal 5Mbps service is really 625KBps.

I find actual speeds to vary +/- 10% depending on the time of day, which is fine with me.

Still shocks me how so many ppl think they should be getting 5MBps for $40/mo internet!

Also shaw only throttles the commonly used torrent ports. Just setup your router/torrent program to use a higher port, and you won't get throttled. 6881-6889 are throttled 4sure!

^Or use Bitcomet as above poster said to encrypt

ya i think i will call them. the evenings are brutal. after midnight it goes fast, pretty much the full 10Mbps. but I dont usually have something downloading overnight

its after work in the evening I want it fast and it never is.

i only just got about 400kB/s from that test.

Same here, Xtreme I on Newsgroups... fast fast fast!!!!!! Always at 1.1mbps to 1.2mbps, it's fun when you can download DVD's in 1 hour. :D

EDIT:

Just called Shaw and got it setup, took about a min to reset the modem and it was up and working, pretty damn slick!

Off my newsgroups i'm getting 2.0mbps (16.0mb/s) download and it's peak hours right now,, i'm hoping I can max it out later tonight,, might be worth keeping it. They give you a week before they start to charge you.

I'll post up how fast I can go during non-peak hours.

Are you sure you are getting 16 mb/s? According to google 25 megabits per second is only 3.125 mb/s..and thats best case scenario.

25 (megabits per second) = 3.12500 megabytes per second

Currently 17.1mbps so i'm getting 2.1 mbps actual download speed.

Using Newsbin Pro 5.33, that tells me both speeds.

I've played with Shaw Nitro. I can't get it cuz there's no business package/static IPs for it yet. Rarely will you see 25mbps from a SINGLE site. The problem is the backbones might be throttling a single connection, the server you're connecting to is maxxed out on their bandwidth, etc. When connecting to multiple sites, I've seen it peak out at 22-25mbps.

I'm also waiting for Shaw to offer this with their business package since I require 2 static IPs to use the VPN. With Xtreme-I, there is a noticable delay for my cases to load, especially if there are a lot of images. Like everyone else, I am only getting near the 10 mbps off peak, and closer to 5 - 6 mbps in the evening. If I could get 16 mbps, that would be a huge improvement for me.

I have asked why they don't offer Nitro for their business subscribers, but they did not really give me a satisfactory explanation. They weren't even able to give me an ETA of when it might become available.

it's not shaw's fault that your torrent is slow...

I would happen to disagree, i must of had some pretty slow torrents because this has been happening for over a year. I have over 90gigs of downloaded stuff. I used to have a t3 connection before this shaw xtreme package. I just did a speed test and only managed to pull a high of 2.4mb. I know peek service is at night therefor giving the upper hand at night. But it really shouldn't be this low. 2.4 when it should be around 10, i will be calling shaw shortly

myself and others in this thread have hit 10mb/s consistently using newsgroups. i rarely see the speed meter drop below 900 kb/s. maybe you should give shaw a call and get them to fix your slow connection.

When I had shaw extreme I maxed out my torrent speed at 800 kbs.It was always maxed most days. Then one day it all changed. At first I thought it was me and after poking around others were having the same issues.
Shaw was throttling. I called them and went back to regular shaw. Didn't seem right to pay for speed that was basically useless to me!

 That shit is fast son. I just downloaded Babel (Proper DVDR) in 27 min. 4.72GB.

I'm gonna need some more hard drives, down to my last 30GB of 600GB.

Well....as far as im concerned it shouldnt be their business what you download. As far as im concerned they should see it as packets and nothing more. Suspected pedophiles are however a different story.

Did you even read my previous post?

run a speedtest off shaw servers:

http://support.shaw.ca/troubleshooting/speedtest2.htm

on Xtreme, you should get 1.25MBps TOPS

on regular High Speed, 625KBps

Nitro, 3.125MBps

If you're getting much less than this, book a service call and a tech will come make sure your modem is getting proper signal.

Bad splitters/shitty cabling/too much or too low of a signal will all affect your speeds.

The techs on the phones have a tool to tell them if your signal to your modem is off at all.

I have a question;

Why would anyone in their right mind pay DOUBLE THE PRICE (of the Extreme plan) for the Nitro/Warp plan when;

Speed is NOT double.
Data Transfer is NOT double.
Email adresses are not double.
etc. etc. And NO POWERBOOST!??!!

Whoever is in charge of marketing/promotions at Shaw should be fired.

Why would anyone pay double the price for a service unless theyre getting double the service????

Either someone at Shaw has no idea what a calculator is, or Shaw is just teasing us with little minute changes to a plan they have bene offering for what over a year now?

Do they think we are so stupid that we are going to sign up for the service that does NOT offer double the value for the double the price, because they changed the name and increased upstream to a measly piddly useless 2mbit?

Please speak ur mind people, because Shaw is just playing stupid little games with us.

If u are going to make us pay double ..offer us double! doesnt take a scientist or mathemitician to figure that out

extreme goes up to 10mbit/s

nitro goes up to 25mbit/s

bandwidth limit for extreme is 100gb

bandwidth limit for nitro is 250 gb.

powerboost is included for free w/extreme, and nitro too i think. But nitro is pretty much powerboost speed anyway so its like constant powerboost.
