making torrents faster?

I am a newbie to torrents and I use UTorrent...when I download shows sometimes the download speed is brutal...like 2kbs only, then it will fly up to 40 and back down again...my upload is always faster...is there a way to fix that? I have a Dell P4 2.8, 1.25 GB RAM if that helps.

I've got my ports closed because of a stupid phone internet router which fucks everything up...long story short I can't open up ports.

I still get great speeds though, almost always in triple digits for popular stuff.

Check your preferences for something about connections to peers or maximum total connections.

I know on BitLord/Comet/Azureus you can have it connect to more people by typing in a really large number like 800. You're not going to actually connect to 800 people, but you'll connect to more than before and hopefully you'll get lucky off of one of those and your DL will fly.
