Has anyone seen these? I've done a search and came up with nothing.

I have been curious for sometime now. Is it for transit? A time Delay of some sort?

I phoned 311 and the lady had no clue either.

Super Bright is an understatement. At night they are so bright, the appear to be blurry from a distance.

They are the same color as the gay blue LED washer jets people glue on their cars.

I heard they were the receivers for the bus "priority" signals, where the side the bus is on, goes first... Never heard it confirmed or not, so :dunno:

Thats exactly what I heard as well - and it makes sence on a road like 16th. You'll either be 10 minutes early, or 10 minutes late riding that road.

Bingo. I complain about this 2 years ago and that's what the city said.

Only seen them on Centre St. so far.

$20 says he does.

They are for the buses to let them know when the light is going to change, It will hold both sides of the intersection @ red so the the bus can go through the intersection.

I'll have to watch out for them because I still have no clue what you're all talking about.

I was wondering the exact same thing last week.

I sat and watched the light one night. Every time a bus went by, while the "Hand" was flashing, the blue light would go on. It became clear that it was a signal that would keep the light green to avoid setbacks on time schedules.

I think the C-Trains, EMS, and CPS use the same thing.

With EMS we use opticon's....different system, it will actually turn the intersection lights green as you're approaching...works great....Plus from some halls we have traffic light control, temporarily that is....

This questions has been asked before, I'm sure of it because I answered it.

The lights are priority receivers for buses to turn lights green.

edit: Found the thread for you.
http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76300

And from that thread:

The traffic signals along Centre Street North are equipped with a feature
called transit priority. This system permits transit buses to turn the
north/south signal green a few seconds early, or hold it green a few seconds
later, than would normally be the case. The objective is to reduce delays
for buses using the corridor. A bus places a call to the traffic signal with
a strobe light that is mounted on the bus. A detector at the signal receives
the call and causes the transit priority feature to be activated. The blue
light that you have seen at the intersections on Centre Street is a
confirmation light to indicate to transit operators that they have placed a
transit priority call to the traffic signal controller at the intersection
and that it will be serviced.
