Just wondering if it is free to get a new plate every year when you renew your registration? The reason I ask is you alwyas see the most of the newest plates on the road leading me to believe that people are getting new plates all the time.
TIA

Nope, same plate but a new sticker.
I've seen some plates that are cracked so bad you cant read them.

No, not for free. I believe it's $50 for a new plate, but you might want to check with your registry.

I got a new plate last year, there was no charge for it with my registration renewal. I just told the registry that I wanted a new license plate.

When you renew your registration, you have the option of getting a new plate at no cost. Just like there is no cost to get a plate when you first register. I have done it on my summer car as I never liked the series I end up getting.
You also have the option to get a new plate for a fee of like $20ish at any time.
Here is a fee schedule for all the registries services. http://governmentservices.gov.ab.ca/ra/Product_Catalogue.pdf

Every time I register my car I get a new plate. But I've never kept a car long enough for the registration to expire.
so basically it is not free, but your registration does include a plate

I would assume that the plate looks new because the car was just registered. Even if its some shitty looking car, someone may have bought it used and registered it.
