Does your E36 325i/325is have a "clutch safety switch" (prevents you from starting the car in gear)?

I recently bought a 325is from Texas and got an out-of-province inspection yesterday. The mechanic said it needed a clutch safety switch to pass. I argued with him and said the E36 didn't have one until '97. I even called Calgary BMW, and the parts guy said there is a clutch switch listed in the parts catalogue. What gives?

Can any of you confirm this? Does your 325 start without pushing the clutch pedal?

My 1993 325is that I had didn't have a neutral safety switch, but my buddies 1997 328is does:dunno:
