EXCEPT if it's a Ford, some of the models lets you program the chip key with just turning the current ignition key on and off.

assuming this is for your e36, the dealership is the only place to get it cut. I checked all the forums and searched when I needed a spare key made and the dealership was the only option.

you can get keys cut anywere just for opening doors and trunks, however you can only get it cut at the dealership if you need a key for starting the car....it is because they have to re-program the key fob so the ignition system recognises the chip

like everyone said stealership, they need to order the key blank than when it arrives they either cut it themselves or tell you to find some one who's is really good at it since new key transponder cost anywhere from 60-300 bucks depending on the model

speaking of which i need to go get another valet key made for my car

I ordered my blanks off ebay and then just had Rona cut them for me, guy did it for free with the stipulation it wasn't his fault if they didn't work :)
Being a Ford, I then just followed the on/off instructions in the manual for programming the key.

Keys are the dealerships new way of fleecing money from you.

I went to Home Depot last year and got a key cut for my dad's honda. Didn't start the car but it opened the doors:thumbsup:
