I am trying to make a graph that looks like this using excel

This is the data I am using

However when I try to do it, this is the best I can do

What's the problem? Well I would like it so that my sun data and shade data points are separate so that I can add different y-standard error bars on each as they have different standard error values. What I currently have only lets me add one value of standard error bars for both sets of points.

so my y value is area, and my x value is sun and shade.

Thanks for any help you can offer

I think you need more data than that. You probably need to plot all the data rather than just the mean.

when your in graph options go to series and add a new 1. set 1 to SUN and 1 to Shade.

I am only comparing the mean sun leaf area to the mean shade leaf area. The only data I didn't include was the raw data that gave me the means of both sun and shade leaves. Oh I also left out the Standard Error Data for both the Sun/Shade leaf areas.

I'm quite convinced that you have to plot the raw data. After all, how would the graph know what the range is (the length of the solid line) if you only plot two points?

I don't need a solid line. I just need 2 points (sun/shade area) with y-error bars (of different sizes).

You need a max/min or range for that data. All you have is a single point.

Right click on your data points so they're highlighted and select format data series.

Go to "Y ERROR BARS"

Under 'Display', select both, and then for error amount select the amount you want the lines to be.

-- Edit --

Mmm, I realize you just said you need 2 error bars of different size, in that case.. use the 'custom setting' for the error amount and then you can specify +/- amounts for each point in their respective rows.

Which chart type did you pick for the graph?

scatter

Haha Biology 313...Worst class I've ever taken in my university life.

I miss the gee-whiz moments though :).

Haha:rofl:

Yeah just finished the 12 lectures with Cartar. Now we get Vamosi for the next 12. I'm definitely going to miss the Gee-Whiz moments.

When did you teach it nonlinear?

Vamosi isn't bad...I just took it last year so guess we're not so different.

That 3rd guy is an asshole though - Lein I think it is?

Yeah Lein is up next. He's that bad huh?

So you just took it last semester?

I took it in 1st semester of last year so it was 2 semesters ago I guess.

Was fun times - 3 straight hours in the same classroom - Chem 351, Bio 311, Bio 313...

The "fun" was sarcasm btw.

Hopefully you'll do well on the exams though. Best of luck, and if you need more lab help feel free to toss me a PM - I don't check this forum much.
