How about the same for driving a diesel car with good mileage?

Using taxpayer money to convince people to buy a car that doesn't actually have any overall environmental benefit? Great fucking idea!

it's about emissions too...

here is a chart of current emission standards: http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/detailedchart.pdf

06 jetta tdi meets BIN 10
06 civic hybrid meets BIN 2
06 toyota prius meets BIN 3

NOx emissions from a tdi are 20-30 times higher than a civic hybrid or prius.

if you look at this comparison, you'll see that the tdi has no apparent advantage over a hybrid car in terms of fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions, annual fuel costs, and air polution. chart is from the EPA. http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/1543/epasp5.jpg

these figures do not include emissions from production which are much worse for hybrids.

I also read an article where the compared fuel economy of a prius vs a jetta tdi on the highway and the tdi won handily.

Also, one must note that hybrids lose a lot of efficiency in cold weather.
