It powers the LCD panels. :)
I bought a new one to attempt a repair myself, but I it turned out that it was the backlight lamp that needed replacement. And I ended up breaking the lamp and didn't want to spend another 30 bucks on a sub-300 dollar used laptop, so I just removed the screen completely to use it with an external monitor.
