Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had some recommended links with information about the upcoming R171. I've done the typical googling to see the doctored spyshots and the usual garbage, but I was hoping that someone might know a more comprehensive source of information.

Thanks.

It's not going to be a SLK30 (AMG model), it's going to be a SLK 55 AMG, normally aspirated V8 from the CLK 55 making about 375hp. The original planned 3.0L 24V V6 S/C motor was scrapped since there isn't even a non AMG NA version of that motor, and it's just not fesible building a one off motor for the AMG model.

Here's a pic of the SLK55 AMG... note the dual exhausts for the V8 motor :

Here's how the interior will look :

And how the car will probably look when it's released :

What would be really interesting to see would be the supercharged V8. I wonder what the bigger engine will do to the weight distribution. I passed on the last american SLK32 because I have the first spot for the 2004, but the heavy engine is making me a little nervous. Why are they replacing the 3.2L?

Have you heard anything definitive about a sequential manual?

Wonder what the price is going to be like. With the Euro performing so well, I am sure it will be $80,000+

The weight of the N/A V8 is about 50lbs more than the 3.2L S/C V6 in the SLK 32, so weight distribution should not be a huge concern.

BTW the R171 isn't coming out until late 2004 as a 2005 model in Canada (probably arrives spring/summer 2004 in the US, a few months ahead).

They're replacing the current AMG engine because the 3.2L V6's have been pretty much discontinued. All the new V6's have 3.7L motors (ie ML 350). The V8 will be slightly more powerful than the 3.2L S/C V6, and since it's a proven engine, and V8 sounds more powerful than a V6 from a marketing point of view, it's a no brainer for AMG to go V8. This is good and bad... good is that the 3.2L can't go more than 415hp without extensive mods, so the V8 has huge potential. Bad because it's going to be expensive to extract power out of it cheaply. $25k us for a reliable S/C kit to bring it up to the 500+ hp levels.

Time to start looking for crashed up S55/CL55/SL55's for a motor swap :D.

Tranny crap, no defiante word yet, but I heard the SMG style tranny will be available in non-AMG models in the US. The AMG will still be stuck with the auto, possibly a 7 speed this time around.

I saw on C&D television that MB is going to put the new 7 speed in all their new cars starting next year.

The new SLK will be in California by October.. I think I have an Oct.5th delivery date right now, so it would surprise me if they held off that far for Canada. The ordering info just got into their computers last week, and production is already being tooled up apparently. What is interesting is that the dealer here is still calling it an SLK32 (probably just out of convenience).

Good news on the weight.. I think a V8 would definately be better than a SC V6, as I am scared as hell of forced induction to that level anyway (although I expect it to be reliable from Mercedes).

I think it would be cheaper to do a Renntech low-pressure supercharger kit then to mess around with an engine swap.. I think the current SLK320 program is about $15k for > SLK32 power gains (rip off unless you already have the 320 and really like it I guess). Another option would be to talk to Brabus, but they are insanely expensive.

Hate to break it to ya, but if you have an order for the '04 model, it's the R170. The R171 is scheduled for auto show introduction in Dec 03, with first deliveries in March/April 04 in europe.

That's why the 04's is still showing up as a SLK 32, because it's a R170 SLK 32 AMG :D. I'm 100% sure that the R171 will be an early '05 model.

It's funny.. I have had that exact conversation with the dealer, and you are probably right. Maybe I will just get an R170. The dealer swears it is an R171, but he is an old retard, so I have no idea what to expect.

It would make sense that they would show the car at an auto show first, and I can't think of any German based shows that are happening between now and October.

How do you like your R170? Would you buy it again?

It's the best car I've ever owned (SLK 32 AMG). It does everything except carry crap from Ikea :D. Since the R170 is going to be discountinued soon, I doubt I'd buy it again :). I've gone through all 3 R170 models anyways hehe.

I'm not terribly excited with the R171, there's a lot of new gadgets in there that will weigh the car down, and make it tougher to drive at a competitive level (BAS is a pain in the ass on the track). And mods to the V8 will be pricey... so right now as it stands, I'd say no to the R171. But who knows, if they have a LSD in the R171, that might be enough of a reason for me to upgrade.

Odd that there is no LSD on the R170, it wasn't even something I considered (yet). I'm right at the point where I might just buy another sedan. An E500 is becoming more and more compelling to me. Only problem is that I would probably be pissed at myself for not getting an E55, but I am not willing to wait for one.

Damn cars.

Another Interior shot....

I'm liking the looks of this car more and more.....
I still have some reservations about the car though...
gotta wait and see how the car drives when it comes out.
I'm crossing my fingers that it won't be more than 100lbs than the current model.

Got a call from the dealer, and apparently they are ready to build me an R171 SLK AMG (don't know any details other than that). I'm going to have to go down there tomorrow to make sure it is an R171 (or at least stare at their ordering system) and hopefully get a delivery date. Should be interesting.

(Kind of funny to buy the biggest and smallest vehicle Mercedes makes.)

I've been getting info from some semi-official sources in Germany... production on the R171 SLK's begin in January 2004, with first delivery (Euro) in March 2004. US deliveries *should* begin around March 2004, with delivery in the May-July timeline depending on how long they hold 'em up for at customs (2002 SLK 32 arrived at port May 2001, but didn't get released till July 2001). The R171 WILL be a 2005 model.

Canada's a bit wacky, for some models (SL500) they got an early release in the April timeframe (full 8 months before year end), but for most models they usually don't release it till sept, 3 months before the new year. I'm guessing there won't be anything special with the SLK, so we won't see it till Sept.

hah. As I suspected, you were right. The 2004 is the R170. There is a really pretty R170 at the Mercedes dealer now.. apparently I now own the first 2004 SLK32 in North America :)

Gotta decide by Friday if I am going to keep it or not. In either case, I am still #1 on the R171 list, which kicks ass.

God is that car beautiful (the R170 I mean). Gonna drive it on Friday.
