I am interested in seeing what sort of surround sound system I can get for under $2000. I know most of this is really down to the users preference but I just want to get started.

Some things that would help a lot are links to vendors that I get get good stuff from for cheap.

Please dont attack me. I am just in the researching stages right now. I have searched and found that companies like paradigm, mirage, energy, harman kardon, yamaha, etc... are good but none of their websites have prices so I cant really price out a system.

I am not an audiophile or anything, I just want something better than my panasonic HTIB,

thanks

I spent almost 2000 alone just on my Harman Kardon receiver.

You can get a good yamaha receiver for about 750 now, and energy speakers can be had for ok money.
Stick canadian with the speakers for ease of warranty/quality.
I would only get a center channel and two front towers for the other 1250 for now, then get surrounds.
1250 would get you paradigm fronts and center, energy, and morage.
Have fun, shop around, don't get pressured in to buying something fast. Leave your wallet in the car.

Quick and easy. No surround back speaker though...

I have put together a couple entry level DIY systems and I would recommend getting:

Pioneer 7.1 Channel THX Receiver (VSX-1016TXVK) around 600$

SBS-01 System Complete Home Theatre System 1249$ CDN +shipping from ontario (ei. had a 100LBS sub shipped for 50$ and was here in a week)

This is the best speaker set up for the money, there are tons of reviews, I have heard them and are quite good for both movies and music for the price. As for the Sub you are getting a very top notch sub, I have alot of experience with there higher end subs and I must say they are built like tanks.

Also If you don't want a book shelf system, I would just get the fronts L,C,R.

Dont for get to addd in all the cables, speaker wires, optical, and video cables. If you are interested in keeping your budget down go with monoprice cable, very well built.

I think for 2500$ you could do this setup including speaker stand and all cables.

PM if you need any other help

Dont buy a Pioneer, get yourself a decent Yamaha reciever, easily had for under $700 and you will have component switching with HDMI inputs.

Speakers, well, its whatever sounds best to YOU.
