Pretty sure its on 1 gas tank not overall kilometers as he talks about gas left in the car, the trip he made and how many liters the gastank has.

Also even if VW advertises 1000kms to the tank that's probably on a dyno without elevations and no changes in speed and had he really tried I am pretty sure that other 5 liters would have taken him to the 1000km mark.

Now if only they could take away the smell, the smoke, the noise and the lack of reliability of those models I'd probably buy one

Isnt impressive if you are horrid at math. What you are forgetting is that a TDI has a 54L tank and an MDX has an 80L tank. Hooray for brains!

I'm not a VW fanboy or a tdi lover but let's compare apples to apples. An MDX has a 77 liter gas tank and if driven like a sissy on the highway only with no baggage may get that number.

the tdi made 913 on 45 liters loaded with stuff i'd say that's at least relatively impressive.

Pretty happy with that!

You should definately be getting better than 900 (perhaps your car isn't broken in fully? Takes till around 50k before you start to achieve max. efficiency). The TDI is easily a 1000km/hwy tank car.

913km is attainable on a city tank if you drive correctly.

BTW MR_ET - I suggest you take a new tdi for a drive, they don't smoke, they aren't excessively loud, and they are definately reliable. They do smell a tad though.

I get about 700km highway driving on a tank of gas (52L) in my Honda Accord. I would venture the Civic is even better than that.

I also didnt get owned by the price of diesel over the past few months.

750km/tank in my integra long distance, the car was fully loaded, going about 120-140.

but if a tdi can do 900km city driving, thats impressive

I can get 800km's in my 06 civic if I baby it :dunno: , I don't see how his integra is unable to compare to that.

I went on a road trip with 2 vehicles to Toronto and back, which was a 1700 km each way trip (the route I took), I took a Subaru Forester down and got about 600 km to a tank, 60L tank, 2.5L AWD, Standard.. But Highway 17 is incredibly hilly, and I was going on average 110. Lots of trucks that slowed me down etc.

On the way back I took my Ford Focus 2L 5spd, rocked highway 11 which is fairly straight and has less hills, incredibly boring drive but I got about 700 to a tank, 50L..

I wish my ford was better on gas, city driving pushes about 450 km/tank.. if that.

My 5 speed 1998 Accord sedan would puch off 880kms per tank on the highway, and have good power too

I frequently do 1200km on the highway in my 05 golf GLS TDI with the slush-box er.... tiptronic.
In the city it is easy to get 800-900km on less than 60L.
If you vent the tank you can fit ~65-66L into the tank, good for another hundred and a bit km on the highway :D

On a related note, just drove Calgary to Vernon on 26.8L of diesel, for ~4.86L/100km. TDI's are :bigpimp:

Consider yourself lucky. A friend of mine barely gets 400km/tank on his '06 GT vert with a mix of highway and city driving.

is it the new jetta? old jettas and golfs are about the same... and 2004+ have newer engines, PD, they are supposed to be more efficient and come with +10hp.

not exactly, from what ive seen on my car, i get better gas mileage goin 130+ than i do going 110. i can go 600km easy if i just cruise going 140-150 on a tank of 55L whereas if i drive going 110. i probalbly hit 500 before i need to refuel

Ahh... 06 jetta.
So ignore my comment about venting the tank, that is gone on the a5 body style.
Also, what transmission do you have?
Both the DSG and manual gearboxes are miles ahead of the old automatics :(
Sometimes driving through the mountains gives you the best mileage, since the speed limit is lower. I usually get my best mileage on trips between vernon and calgary, or vernon and vancouver.

That said, whoever is commenting on the smoke reliability and smell needs to look at the new VW's a little bit closer.
There is about 5-10 seconds of diesel smell when you start it on a cold morning, that's it.
I have only twice ever seen any smoke from the back end in over 40,000km, and I have had no reliability issues at all.
Go over to tdiclub.com and browse the forums, they are generally very reliable cars. The only issue that people keep running into, is they forget to change the timing belt....
It is not that the cars are unreliable, just the owners ;)

2006 Jetta wagon is a MK4 so you can still vent it.

because of my mods haha, i fill up almost every 2nd day driving to work, downtown and back home

funny thing is though if i drive it hard, or drive it nice, fuel efficiency seems to be the same lol

What is done to it?
I had a car like that, blamed it on the mods until I checked the A/F mixture, realized I had a problem and changed the O2 sensor... made all the difference

great milleage is cool if it's your regular or family car, because you still feel like you're winning something... but i'll take a membership in the 200km/h club rather than the 1000+ km club

my PL24T has about a 45L tank, and if i get 400km it's a very happy day :nut:
