Head unit is in, wired, and runs fine, but no sound. I don't think there's a factory amp in this car, but I may be wrong. While I hunt for it, does anyone have suggestions?

If I do find an amp, is there any way to take my pre-outs to the factory amp for the time being, seeing as I can't run the powered outputs there?

take the deck out and attach the head unit directly to a speaker and see if it works,

if so, did you use a factory quick install harness? check all the wiring and make sure it is right (get a repair manual and compare speaker wire colors to what you did)

and I doubt that you can take your deck pre-outs (I am assuming this is what you ment) and run it into the factory amp.

another problem could be that the input from the factory deck was a smaller voltage then what you are trying to output and the amp isnt able to see the signal. Try and turn the deck down really quiet and see if it kicks in

no sound at all? although it may not work in cd mode, try and see if the radio works.

OT: does this forum not have a car stereo section?

It does.

Looking for some BMW specific advice :P No worries. I figured it out anyways.

Factory amp found behind the panel in the trunk. It may be as simple as getting a 12 volt turn-on signal to it, or I may have to splice the speaker wires to bypass it. Either way I should have a fix. No sound for now, except the sub :)

3 year bump, what did you end up doing? My friend is having this problem, after he installed his new deck.

Haha, yeah. All you need to do is take the remote turn on wire from your deck (usually blue, may also be called "power antenna") and wire it to the similar one in the harness you bought to fit the E36. It should connect to the big white wire coming out of the main harness. That'll turn on the factory amp!
