Hey guys,

I am considering trying to get on as a field operator -- just was curious about what kind of education/experience they are looking for?

Humm no idea bud its always differnt. You would have to call and speak to that department, introduce yourself and find out what exactly they want. See if you can pick up a contact name to send your resume too. My best guess anyway.

I work for CNRL. I'm just a co-op student so I am not totally sure but I will give you as much help as I can.

this past summer I worked my workterm as Plant operator out in the field. Basically, all the guys I worked with had a little bit of experience at school like SAIT, but nothing major...I think one had some sort of power engineering but other than that they are just all farm boys that have worked there for awhile. I think as I was leaving the new guy that I trained only had his grade 12, but he was hired through a contractor. CNRL prefers to hire through contractors as far as I know because it is cheaper for them, then after a year if all is going well they offer the person the job with benefits and whatnot.

I think this is generally what they look for
http://www.cnrl.com/client/job/1943/1944/2007_038.pdf

So basically, they want experience in the oil industry, and SAIT is an asset.

Hope this helps :dunno:

Yea it's getting more and more that you need some sort of training from a college.

Well, I have:

- 3 years of working on the rigs (roughneck and derrickhand)
- 2 year Computer Systems Technology diploma
- 2 years at SLB as a Field Supervisor/Specialist

I'm not sure if any of that would be all that benificial towards operating, but it is better than some people! Might as well fire a resume in there.

Well, most people that I know that are field operators are green out of school with a petroleum tech diploma -- and my downhole knowledge is about 100X more than theirs. lol.

I will throw in a resume and see what happens, I have a couple other contacts so I will see what they say.

I can pretty much guarantee you do. Why the switch from rigs to operating?

I haven't worked the rigs since before going to college -- I have been working as a wireline supervisor/technician for the last couple years.

Oh nice. Yeah I think with that kind of experience you should be a sure-in. I was operating with guys as little as a grade 10 education up to power engineers. Good luck with the job search!

If someone here works at CNRL and can answer some of my questions, can you please pm me.

I pm'd a member on here but no reply so guessing he doesn't want to help.

Thanks in advance.
