You can get transportation insurance through the registry. It is meant for you to drive the vehicle from one spot to another. It can be good up to a cpl of days. Unless this has changed in the last little while.

what is the purpose of this 24 hr permit? if you are from out of province and plan on getting a car from alberta and register it in the province you resident in, all you gotta do is to get a temp insurance from your own province insurance agency(SGI for sask, BCIC for BC), and then show your temp insurance and bill of sale to a AB registre, they will issue you a permit that is good for 1-3 days.

the transport insurance can be good for upto a week. it's not overly expensive either and is done at the registry and can be had at any registry office in alberta.
