So Sony, Canon and Olympus have announced new DSLR cameras for PMA. There are rumours of an 18-20MP FF or 1.1 crop D3 from Nikon which would be extremely good news (although still unconfirmed). Any predictions?

I'm surprised we didn't see the D3 at PMA - and the 1.1 crop 18MP specs are from a very reliable source. I suspect that it'll have a ~10MP HSC-DX mode, with faster framerate and compatibility with the DX lenses. However, we'll just have to wait (longer) and see.

Then again, Nikon has never been one to rush into, well, anything.

At any rate, got any more info on the Sony DSLRs? I can't seem to find anything about new SLR's demo'd at PMA other than the Olympus & Canon ones.

I want a D300 so badly. I hope they keep the 1.5 crop though because I don't want to have to buy new lenses as well. Also, I'm always wanting more zoom. Is this "D3" the successor to the D200 or is it something else?

D3 is the successor to the D2 series - the D2H(s) and D2X(s). I don't expect to see a D300 for at least 3 years.

Ah yes, that makes sense, thanks. I guess I have a while to wait then.

Does nikon have anything else coming to the P&S market? They used to have a pretty good handle on it with the coolpix 8XXX models and the 5XXX models and now all they have is the S10 and the "L" entry level models. We would of bought the 8800 over the S2IS a while ago except it took like 30 seconds for it to write a raw file to the card. Awesome camera though otherwise.

Is there a website with all of this news on it so I don't have to bug you guys for it?

DPReview generally has pretty good PMA coverage.

Ya know what Nikon needs?! A 80-400mm AF-S VRII lens! 2.8 prime would be impeccable but I'm not sure if it's even possible over that range.

That would be glorious but it would probably be 8 or $10,000 haha.

Will DX lenses work on a full frame camera? I don't think they do, do they? Is it because they can't properly focus light onto the furthermost parts of the larger sensor?

DX lenses work on any FF F-Mount that will accept G type lenses. You'll just get monster vignetting on the wide end (notice there are no DX teles). This is unlike the Canon EF-S system that says EF-S just won't work on an FF, period. Both have plusses and negs.

Interesting, thanks.

I personally have no desire whatsoever to own a FF camera. I would need to spend way too much money on lenses and the only advantage I see is that if I were a hardcore landscape photographer, I could get ~5mm more on the wide end (assuming 10-20mm lens or similar). To me that would never be worth the price, and I find myself always wanting more zoom so I can't get enough of the 1.5 crop factor. I suppose the ideal would be a FF camera with a selectable crop factor from say, FF, 1.5, and 2.0. It doesn't matter though because I will never spend $8000 on a camera :D

Well one can dream;) Still, an AF-S motor on that 80-400 with the type II VR system would be awesome

Yeah I seem to hear mixed things about the 80-400. The 70-300vr is 1/3 the price which was what made my decision for me, and it has VR II.

Very true, the lack of AF-S in the 80-400 was something I always found rather odd, as the focus speed is really the lens's weak point. f/2.8 just isn't going to happen, haha!

That being said, I'd rather have the 200-400 f/4 VR! :D

Definitely:) Maybe a 200 f/2.0 might strike your interest as well?!

The 200mm f/2.0 VR is a dream lens, for sure - but the price tag is horrendous! :nut:

PMA 2007 opens and all Nikon has is the earth shattering D40X.
