Nikon Marketing needed to fill the gap between the D40 and D80, and that's what the D40x is for. They've got the D40x to compete with the Rebel XTi, and the D40 to undercut it and attract consumers who would usually look for something like an S3IS or other high-end P&S.

The D3 rumors are all a bit suspect at the moment, as the D3 prototypes are currently being field-tested around the world. Apparently, the final sensor hasn't selected yet and may be either a 1.1 or 1.0 crop. It will not be announced at PMA, according to Nikon.

I think that the other reason behind this is the rumours that Sony is going to stop producing the 6MP sensors used for the D40. I can't remember where I was reading that but its an interesting thought about the quick upgrade for the camera.

Nikon is going to rule the sub $1K DSLR market for sure. That will only improve their marketshare, spur innovation and bring Canon prices down, which ends up benefiting me in the long run.

I agree that Nikon needs to fill up the gap between D40 and D80 ..

however, they can call this new 10MP camera D60 .. or D50X ..

Then they won't piss off those D40 owners! (D40 has been out for only few months!!!)

Anyway ... none of my business .. :dunno:

A a lot of people on Dpreview seem to be buzzing about a D200s. Any thoughts?

D40x wins of course in price since the features are the same side by side. however, if you look really closely, you'll see issues such as no autofocus with AF lenses with the D40x, no status LCD, no DOF preview, shitty kit lenses, etc, etc. on both cameras.

the sub $1000 price range is very boring in my opinion because the manufacturers know consumers will be deciding based on specs such as megapixels and price. therefore they try to match each other's specs by leapfrogging each other little by little each time without anything exciting (3FPS-WOW!!!!). where it gets interesting is when we start talking about the D200 and the 5D.

^I would say the 30D and D80 are worth mentioning, I find the D80 has an excellent feature set and is a very capable camera. The 30D is also very solid, but in need of a revamping.
