Despite all entrants utilizing a spring rate stiffer than stock, each suspension was more comfortable than the stock AP2-chassis S2000.

That is retarded!!! All those cars were modified differently from one to another. Worst comparison you could do.

sport compact car.

hachiroku is right though, the test wasn't fair in the least bit but they were all running the same tires.

even so, the stock ap2 was the slowest car and had the harshest ride.

I Agree with you there. But it is damn hard to find a good coilover that works great at the limit as the stock ap2 setup. The CR suspension is amazing in my opinion.

CR is very similar to AP1 spring rates, steering ratio and such, differences are the rear suspension members, sway bars and bushings, as well iirc the spring rate in the ap2 is higher in the rear than the front

I thought I read somewhere that the CR had the same steering ratio as the ap1.

I've never driven and ap1, just an ap2 and not for very long. I don't have many other s2k setups to compare it to, but I love the way the CR handles.

Yes sorry I explained it poorly the steering ratio is pretty much the same as ap1

I might be reading it wrong but it sounds like AP2 is a harsher ride than AP1?

The AP1 stock suspension was enough to keep me from using it as a daily driver. I thought they were supposed to have revised the AP2 to be more streetable. I know they reduced oversteer by modifying suspension, wheel/tire stagger, and some other tweaks.

They installed a new main deflector dish to provide a much smoother ride in the ap2.

Myself, I prefer the old main deflector dish....

AP2 feels like a cadillac compared to the AP1.

You can't compare AP2 to "AP1". Early AP1s are quite different from the 02-03.

Spring Rates:
Early AP1 218F 291R
Late AP1 240F 230R
AP2 233F 262R
CR 392F 342R

I have an early ap1 and a popular mod for this setup is to swap the front springs for CR springs, as the fronts are way too soft. As you can see the CR is a dramatic change in suspension setup and therefore handles better.

Keep in mind those are only spring rates and only tell a partial story as to how the car will handle.

Same here. I've seen a couple KW SC kits installed down south... but they're pretty expensive. I think for 08 ap2 it was like 6500 USD... which is just over 8k CAD at the moment.

Honda S2000 still one sweet ride (http://www.calgaryherald.com/honda+s2000+still+sweet+ride/1010783/story.html)

The last sentence:

That said, the S2000 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and its $50,600 price is steep, especially when compared with other available roadsters such as Mazda's MX-5

Can you really compare a S2k to a MX-5?

Can you really compare a S2k to a MX-5? Newspaper auto journalists are almost always terrible. That article could have been written by someone who's never driven an S2000 and it offers no insight into the car whatsoever. The fact he compared a true sports car to a sport compact roadster just seals the deal.

"The leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel has a meaty feel, somewhat akin to a race car. And the stubby shift lever is a joy to engage, slipping precisely into each of the six close-ratio gears. When pushing the envelope with this car, those two controls work so well together, making the driving experience such a pleasure."

What a joke, the guy has no clue about the car. He talks like he mastered the car in one drive.

So, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on an AP1 S2000. What's a reasonable price for an AP1, cheaper to get it in town? or go look in BC?

Skyline_Addict
12-15-2008, 10:35 AM
^^^ hard to say man. you really have to shop around, and finding the car you want can take a while.

from my experience buying an s2000 (AP2) about a month ago is as follows:

AP1 - Plenty of these on the market, but almost always high mileage regardless of year (ranging from just under to way about 100,000 km). Asking from 15k - 23k.

AP2 - Much harder to find, but not much problem finding any under 50,000 km (even 2004s). Asking from 23k - 33k.

So your answer to the question is in the form of another question - what's reasonable to you? you're not giving us much info besides the fact that you want an AP1.

rc2002
12-15-2008, 11:19 AM
I'd buy an AP1 locally. Calgary/Edmonton market seems cheaper than most and there's quite a bit of selection. At least there was a couple months ago when I last looked.

You might be able to get a good deal on one at this time of year too.

yep. I bought mine locally (well, Edmonton) and it was a good deal. I searched countrywide, and there wasn't anything in BC or anywhere else for that matter, that was priced low enough to warrant a trip and a drive back. There could be some good deals out there, from sellers who are desperate to create some more room in their garage.

there are some cheap s2000s in Calgary..but be prepared for high mileage, amongts other things.

Sorath
12-15-2008, 12:24 PM
definately look locally, now that we're in a recession im pretty sure there are people hurting to sell their cars. so pretty sure u can lowball them and get one for a steal without having to go far.

rc2002
12-15-2008, 12:27 PM
Problem in Calgary is that there's still a lot of money here. We've barely felt any effects of a recession yet. There is still good employment and people aren't really hurting.

The one plus is that Calgary isn't the best climate for having an S2000 and they were overbought from the US when the exchange was good so it's definitely a buyers market here. I'd take a look at the one 95EagleAWD is selling.

How reliable are the AP1's?

Mechanically they're pretty sound. There is some talk of a 2nd gear grind, popping out of 4th and weaker differentials, however I think these issues are fairly minor.

Soft top tears seems to be the biggest issue with these cars.

15-20k does limit you to an AP1. If you're comfortable with the aftermarket stuff on that car, then I think it would be a good deal. However, when buying a used car OEM > * :D. If all the stock parts are provided with the car, even better.

expect the same honda quality in the s2000, but when there are problems they will be more costly to fix than your standard Civic-ish problems. most major "problem" in the s2000 (AP1) is bump steering.

Reliability-wise, the cars are bulletproof - aside from maintenance items, the car didn't give me any troubles. It's a great car out of the box and doesn't need any mods. I would opt for an 02-03 though if you can - more of the mechanical issues were sorted out, and the rear windshield won't get cloudy because it's glass.

Search for Skyline_Addict's thread. He started one before he bought his and there are a lot of pros and cons in there.

I rather like the bodykit on that car and 89k kms seem pretty low for a 2000 model, only averaging 10k kms/yr which is dec. And I was thinking of buying a CF hood and trunk anyways. Only thing I would be switching out is the front bumper for J's Racing and get a hardtop. Anything that I should be looking out for?

Skyline_Addict
12-15-2008, 04:01 PM
^^^ It's not so much that the mods look good or bad or if you like the mods or not, but just the fact that the car is modded. When you add anything to the car that isn't OEM spec, you are essentially compromising some aspects of what the car was originally designed for (even body kits). But if you're comfortable with it, then go for it. If it was me, I would only buy a car like that if it came with all OEM parts, and I picked up the car with all OEM parts installed at the time (and the mods were extra, not vice verca). But that's just me. For the 2000 year, you will have a plastic window on the hardtop, not glass, and also the older ECU that was later updated in the 2003 models.

as with any other car, stuff you should look out for is the stuff that shows up on car fax and any general wear and tear. the car is solidly built, so there shouldnt' be any typical problems you would have to look out for. either way, get it inspected before you buy.

All factory hardtops are shipped in the same way. They come in a large box that is designed for the top and supported and cushioned where needed. The outside has labelling to say which way is UP. Very rarely does a HT arrive damaged. It is a very expensive piece that is insured and no shipping company wants to be hit for the damages. Unless it is an act of shear stupidity, hardtops arrive just fine. Or if you ship it in your own box that wasn't designed for it, then there's a higher risk.
The vast majority of S2000 hardtops are the OEM factory ones that you buy from the Honda dealer. A few Mugen ones exist, as well as the Mooncraft. Of course, there are replicas of these as well. I can't say about the boxes those come in.
NOTE: Only the OEM HT comes with the hardware needed to install it. All others, you must buy the hardware as extra pieces. If you buy a used OEM HT, you must insist the seller takes off the hardware and give it to you. Otherwise, you will have to buy all the pieces. This can run you as much as $1000.00, depending on the year of your car.
Although many S2000s are driven all winter long here as is, a few have the HT. IMO, that's the only way to go if you plan to drive it all winter long. It makes the car a bit quieter, a little bit warmer and you never have to worry about a foot of snow sitting on top of it. Lastly, it makes it look like a totally different car. For 6 months every year, I have a convertible. The other 6 months, I have a coupe.
Hardtop thefts are beginning to show up in the past couple of years, so some sort of locking system would be wise, although each one has an ID stamp hidden on it. Same goes for the seats (locks). It's easy to do if you think about it a bit. Makes the top and seats a chore to take off when you want to, but since you only do it twice a year, no biggie. Custom, home made seat locks take forever to undo, but there's never a need to remove them anyway. You can also get the McGard seat locks, but these are only sold through an S2000 member on S2Ki (username "Kodakan_4").

^^^ Very true, but Mugen Hardtops, if genuine does come with honda oem hardware and seals. We had two brand new mugen tops come from japan that came sealed in the original box and they came in perfect condition, but beware if you are buying used, as xviper had mentioned. The oem top has a glass rear window and very pricey to replace.

Does anyone know if injectors from an H22a will work on our engines? AP1 that is.

Cheers.

How would you lock up a hardtop? If a thief were to steal it then really it's not that hard for those who know how since it's only latched in (unless you have mooncraft).

If I told you on a public forum, then every thief who reads the internet will know. And no, I won't even tell you if you PM me. I don't know you from a hole in the ground.
There are many ways you can lock down a HT so it's difficult to remove. You just have to use your brain to think of the ways.

Hey Xviper, just a quick question:

how familiar are you with the emanage?

I use the Vortech piggy back ECU, so no experience with the Emanage. What are you trying to do? If you are doing a custom turbo or even a supercharger kit, from what I've read, the AEM stand alone is a much better way to go.

Yah, I've been doing heaps of reading on s2ki and I've heard so many horror stories from both the emanage (this includes the ultimate) and the aem ems. Just way too many options on the ems that may seem superfluous for my needs. Also, who in Calgary can tune the ems for our cars? I know Toma is an AEM certified tuner, so would this be a challenge or another walk in the park for him?

Also, Trying to justify spending the money on a emanage blue (300 Cad) or an aem ems (1000 usd) when I'm only looking to boost 7-9 psi using 440 - 550 injectors.

I've read some good things for guys running a low boost setup so that's what I was after, something similar to my lude, running 7.5 psi and it was good enough for me.

Another budget turbo like my lude...except this time, I have a bit more experience with building turbo kits! ;) haha

Been looking on s2ki.com and seems like everyone is running the inlinepro kit. I'm looking to stick with a t3/t4 setup with nothing more than 550 injectors and a piggyback. Like I said, this is going to be a budget build and with the proper stuff, I reckon it'll be good for what I want it for.

What engine oil weight and brand are you guys running?

I'm still debating between 10W30 and 5W40. Even though my car will be seeing track conditions, I'm not sure if it gets hot enough here to justify the 40 weight. However it does get cold enough to justify the 5 weight.

I've run 10W30 syn. and 5W30 syn (for winter) and now I'm using 5W40.
Yes, in the summer, under track conditions, it will get hot enough. 5W40 will be the best of both worlds. Some people go nuts trying to decide what oil to use. If you go by what Honda has recommended, you can't go wrong. That being 10W30 or 5W40. It's only if you go beyond this, that you need to "justify" what you use.

You cannot build a budget turbo S2000. You will blow your engine, turbo, both or something else. Brand new, you have to have at least $6000 for a proper build. Trust me on this, I have done the math sooooooo many times. Used, you are gambling on the health of the turbo/manifold, even more so if you cannot see it in person.

There is no cheap solution for tuning a turbo S2000. Kpro or AEM EMS are your two best options. After that probably about $1000+ for tuning the thing (ask Toma this is an estimate). With a supercharger you can get away with Emanage on low PSI (6-9) because there is not much boost on partial throttle. With a turbo there is.

An Emanage you can tune easily on closed loop (full throttle 80%+). The same goes for VAFC, that is why it's so popular for leaning out the top end of early AP1 cars. When you reset the stock ECU it takes a few days (~5days) for it to relearn its fuel curves and adjust to the operating conditions. This makes it very hard to tune an Emanage on open loop (partial throttle) as you reset the stock ECU when installing the Emanage. Then you have to constantly make adjustments to the Emanage based on the changes that the stock ECU makes.

You can check on s2ki some of the guys running an Emanage leave their cars with their tuners for like a week. That's gonna be a lot of tuning $.

Of course there are disadvantages to running an AEM EMS as you lose a lot of the stock functions, constant CEL, and no OBD. Kpro is a lot better in this respect, but it will run you close to $2000 including the RSX ecu.

Here is by far the best and cheapest turbo kit for the S2000 I have found. As well it looks a lot better than IP as it is a top mount setup. If I was to ever turbo I would go with their equal length though.

You have to be a baller to run a turbo S2000. But it is a very capable engine, and with a just 3mm HG you can hit 500whp.

What I meant by that is that it is nowhere near as cheap as turbocharging a civic, prelude or other Hondas. $6000 is barebones, the cheapest you can go to probably make around 300-350 whp. With a better manifold, turbo, tires, clutch it will be over $10000.

I mean if you can drop $10000 on a turbo build for a $15000 car, you have to have some baller status, no?

Like Dimi has said AEM EMS or K Pro have shown the best results for fuel managment, there will be two AP1 in calgary using EMS one under boost and the other N/A and Toma will be tuning these cars.

As for the hardtop lock, in California or places like that I would be more concerned, but in Calgary theres 3 Mugen tops that I know of and it really would not be easy to sell in Western Canada. Very interesting though I may look into looking into a lock system for mine, but currently I am not too concerned about it.

Are we talking about the emanage blue or emanage ultimate or both? I've been reading on S2Ki that there were a few people having success with the ultimate.

Also, why are they resetting their ecu's? Throwing too many codes?
