Also, anyone have any tips as to what to do about small worn out rear corners on my top? What's the best way to go about repairing this so there's no holes, not overly large, about the size of a quarter if that. Don't think it warrants replacing the entire top which would be pretty pricey I'm sure.

I used black tenacious tape (gear aid) to patch from the inside on those troublesome wear spots before they wore all the way through. Bit of a task to do it right, moving the bar out of the way and applying the patch area smooth but it is doable as a one man job. This works really well, just make sure to apply a section that covers the whole motion of the bar so it doesnt start to peel the tape at the edges. Adhesive is really strong and holds well even in hot weather. Make sure to really clean the surface youre applying to.

I bought some clear tarp /awning tape from crappy tires seems to be holding well . I applied it from inside ...make sure it is super clean as inside is never really cleaned.

Found a oem style CF hood off kijiji for cheap in really good condition so I'm happy about that. Still debating what to do wheels wise, put the rpf1's on last summer as you can see a couple pages back but feel tempted on ce28's :nut:

Think I'm going to get that Jed guy to detail my car once summer comes around, but I'll most likely tackle the engine bay myself as that will be time consuming. The hood on my current/old cf hood has a vent so any time it rained, water would get sprayed around, if you know what I'm saying, not crazy like but with dust/dirt settling it's made an ugly mess, not horrid but definitely needs to be cleaned properly.

Bought some clear side markers from ricks website, got my hood, wheels are up in the air, and aside from the k&n intake I'm not sure what else I could do before diving into more serious performance mods. Don't really miss having an excessively loud exhaust and for now would rather have a more reliable ride than to deal with any small issues that might pop up from boosting it or some jazz like that. I can't wait for summer fuuuuuuuuu

fuck it. ITB's. YOLO.

Interestinggggg. I have some 255 advans laying around, maybe use them for the rear, currently am on my enkei's anyway.

You ever get any shit/trouble from anyone for having clear corners on your headlights, if I recall correctly you had them Errol??

Errol.
02-11-2013, 11:11 PM
Yea I had 245/40/17 star specs all around.
With my setup and those rims i didn't have to touch the rear fenders. Had the fronts rolled and pulled already from the track. Had a bunch of camber though. Still some how wore out the outsides quicker than the insides though. Check the width of your 255. Some tires fit wider than others. The star specs sat like a 255 compared to most.

Nope. *Knock on wood*. Don't see why I would.

NA is so much easier to work with but a boosted S2K would make one hell of a car.. Decisions decisions

NA with a properly set up suspension is so much fun.

Shlade
03-08-2013, 07:40 PM
Those are both expensive routes for a s2k if you were looking to swap haha

Ill admit the cobra doesn't have the greatest interior but the exterior and power In those things make up for the lack of interior work.

Has anyone seen a rear diffuser for an AP1? If my car ever gets back in commission, I'm keen on slapping one on. Thinking of a J's or a shine.

And as for Turbo vs NA, turbo is SO much fun but meh, I could do without the headaches. I recommend taking down the compression and avoid high speed runs against bikes!!! :banghead: :banghead: On the other hand, going through the gears and hanging side by side with an '11 shelby cobra was a pretty good feeling. :nut:

Anyone ever have an issue with their vehicle speed sensor? Is it possible that my wheels could be playing an issue with throwing it off and causing my CEL to come on?

basically what was happening was the my speedo would drop to zero and stop working for a bit, causing the CEL to come on and the car would run like crap until I turned it off and restarted it, after a few drives, the CEL would clear and car would run fine until the speedo would drop to zero again and the process would repeat.

Started out as a only happening very rarely to all the time before I put the car into storage last year. Will be taking it out of storage at the end of the month and figure I might as well try to figure things out before hand.

I do have a yellow jacket speed calibrator installed as well which might be the cause due to faulty unit perhaps or bad ground wire maybe. I only asked about the wheels issue as it only started happening after I got those rpf1's put on, could just be coincidence though

The VSS picks up the signal on the side of the tranny from the output shaft. Your tires would not affect this particular problem. I also have the Yellow Jacket. Before that, I had the Yellow Box. The YB was problematic in that it was very sensitive to input voltage. My current YJ goes through phases where it would do as yours does. Speedo sometimes goes to zero, CEL comes on after about 1 km or so. The next time the car is started, all would be back to normal except for having to reset the ECU.
It's the ground. The YJ is very sensitive to ground, which must be very solid. I've run the ground wire directly through the fire wall and attached to the negative terminal of the battery. I haven't had a problem since. Mine would do it usually after I've stopped at a red light. The VSS reads voltage from 0 to 5V. When the car is stopped, there is virtually no volts going through the YJ input. Sometimes, this can cause the ground to "fall asleep" and it needs the jolt of a restart to get it back.
Also, if you ever see the speedo drop to zero, before the CEL comes on, even if you are rolling, turn ignition OFF (accessory position will do) and quickly turn it back on. The car's momentum will get the engine going with little fuss. This should reset the YJ and the CEL won't have a chance to trigger.

Interesting, awesome info. Sounds about dead on for what I have been experiencing. I'll check out the ground/relocate it when I get the car out of storage, glad it might be as something as simple as that. Makes sense as I didn't think it would be the VSS directly as the car doesn't have much mileage on it...but can never be too sure when it comes to vehicles.

Thanks xviper

I just bought a set for my te37's shipped directly from Japan for about $120. When purchase them, you just have to list that you need the O ring type for your ce28's

http://www.rhdjapan.com/volk-racing-a-flat-center-cap-58225

The product was listed with a wait time of 1-2 months but I received mine in a week and a half. I used EMS method to ship and wasn't charged any duties at the door either.

There's also another site directly from japan that's a little cheaper but I know a guy who ordered from there and waited 2 months.
http://www.nengun.com/rays/a-flat-type-center-cap
only about $75 a set + shipping..

Question.
Occasionally, my transmission makes a "clunking" sound and the shifter/transmission feel like they hit something when I'm parked (say, at a red light) and shift into first gear. A buddy told me that I needed a new pressure plate. Is it true? Or could it be something else? This is my second S, and both of them do the same thing, so I figured that it is normal. Advice? Thanks in advance :D

edit:
I don't know if this matters, but both are AP1. 2001 and 2003.

Your buddy should just stay your buddy and not your mechanical adviser.
What you hear is totally normal. I'll explain why after I tell you to try a couple of things whereby it won't make that noise and when it will.
1. You know how to make the clunk, right? The car is idling in neutral, clutch is UP. Then you push the clutch down and throw it into first ............... CLUNK!
2. Next time, just before you throw it into gear do one of the following:
a. after you push the clutch down, wait for 3 seconds, then throw it into 1st .............. no CLUNK!
b. push the clutch down and immediately throw it into 4th, then immediately into 1st ............ no CLUNK!

How am I doing so far?

Reason why there's a clunk? ..................
When you are just sitting there idling in neutral, clutch UP, the engine is spinning the transmission at whatever the rpm is. When you suddenly ram it into 1st, and you are still just sitting there, the output shaft of the tranny is linked to the rear wheels (which aren't moving). That spinning tranny suddenly comes to a STOP. That energy is transferred all along the driveline to the back drive wheels, closing up all the spaces and backlash along the way. The CLUNK you hear is when that energy causes the rear diff pinion to slam itself into the teeth of the ring gear, which is held firm by the non-moving rear wheels.
When you wait 3 seconds before throwing it into 1st, you allow the viscosity of the tranny fluid to stop the spinning beforehand. When you throw it into 4th, because the ratio of 4th is so tall, the slamming of the all the spaces together is much less evident and can be absorbed within the tranny itself and you get no CLUNK.
All cars do this but in the S2000, because of the specific gear ratios of the tranny, the diff, the backlash built into the driveline and the next to nothing sound deadening through the car, you get the CLUNK but more importantly, you actually hear it. This car was designed to drive compulsive/obsessive people over the deep end. Don't let it.

I figured it had something to do with putting something spinning and something stationary together. I wasn't 100%. Thanks for such detailed explanation. You just saved me a few hundred bucks on unnecessary clutch replacement :D

My IS300 did the same thing and everything was fine with the car. FWD cars this is not noticed as much Or at all as there isn't a driveshaft.

If he is noticing a click in the rear end it could because the axle bolts are not tight enough. I had this issue when I picked car up. Re-Torqued them to revised spec and haven't noticed it since then. This is an easy fix. Here is a link to TSB

If you're certain it's coming from the front, there's something else going on.
Does the tests I posted about and see if you can eliminate the clunk. If you can, I think you're just not following the sound very well.

Ya it doesn't make that sound if I press the clutch, and put in gear 2-3 seconds after. Maybe I'm just not following the sound very well :nut:

Anyone replaced their AP1 valve retainers before?
Gonna do this one of these weekends soon and wondering if anyone has any tips or advice. Read a lot of the DIY threads on s2ki but figured extra input wouldnt hurt.

Thanks for the link, this one seems to be the main go to. I have this one printed out and highlighted getting ready to get cracking. Mainly wanted to see if any new tricks or tips have surfaced since then.... which it doesnt seem like.

Didnt realize xviper was a local, nice knowing there are some serious gurus not too far around the bend.

Not sure if theyre cracked, but I'm third owner and I dont want to risk it. Got about 70K clocked, I'd just rather be overly cautious with this versus risking dropping a valve.
