Customization is worth it if you do it properly - i.e. don't compromise quality in the process. Companies like Spoon and Mugen use OEM vendors and make products that are on par or better than the OEM Manufacturers.

However, a lot of customization involves removal of good OEM parts in favour of garbage parts. This is something that took me a long time to figure out.

I don't think it looks good at all, way too low. s2ks look like 4 x 4s before they get dropped, but that's a little too extreme for my tastes. SilentDancer on s2ki had a pretty low drop too, but it looked 100000x better

The braking would be awesome. Once he hits the brakes and the nose dives, the front spoiler will provide extra friction for extra stopping power.

hmmm

also wanted to know if you lose the functionability of the soft top..

ie... you take the hardtop off and you are driving and it starts raining, are you able to put the top up?

shadowz

Hard top uses two catchers like the soft top, thats easy and then two levers on each side, takes literaly 30 seconds with another person, same to put it on, no you dont lose the function of the soft top it just sits in there until youre ready to use it again, so that should answer your question about the rain.

A few years ago, some doorknob thought he was a big, strong hunk of a man and tried to take the top off on his own. The top got a bit unbalanced and one of the pointy striker rods came down on the trunk and punched a hole in it.

As for what's involved in the hardtop, you must installe the 2 rear receiver assemblies. Then the top just goes on and gets latched in 4 places. A hoist system can be built in your garage to do all the work and it becomes a 1 person job.

Just the way it comes off the car is kind of awkward, since most of the weight is in the rear, i can easily see that happening

It's not the weight. It's how it's distributed and the odd shape the hardtop has. All OEM HTs weight the same.

And where are you when you do this? If you are inside the car, how will you get out while holding 50 lbs above your head? If you are outside the car, you will be reaching with your arm fully extended, trying to balance a 50 lb weight as you clear the car.
Make a hoist. Problem solved.

Can anyone here give me the unbiased comparison of AP1 and AP2, other than the most common knowledge (red line, low-end power, etc). I'd be more than willing to shell out the extra cash for an AP2 if it is justifiably a "better" car. I'd just like to see which characteristics of either the AP1 or AP2 suit my needs better.

the S2000 is like the NSX. Perfect from day one.

I prefer the higher redline of the AP1 on the road course. More revs to play with and being able to hold your shifts is always handy. The AP2 is more useable on the road.

The only real advise i can give you is for an 02+ for the glass rear window. The plastic window really sucks.

The only other advise is to look at mileage and condition regardless of year.

arian_ma
06-18-2008, 10:06 AM
I own the AP1, and as exhilarating the 9K pulls are, I think I would prefer the more torquey AP2, even if it is by a little bit. The 2 speaker system in the AP1 V1 leaves you with something to be desired, and the plastic rear window does suck, though it is bigger so your blind spot is not as huge. I also like the way the AP2 headlights look over the AP1.
Overall, I think the AP2 would be a more manageable car to deal with, but for your case, since it is going to be your weekend cruiser, I would suggest an 02+ AP1, with the 4 speaker system, the glass rear window, and the rawness of the AP1. You want sensibility? Drive your Fit!

dimi

AP2 is the "better car" IMO for the following reasons (I own an AP1):
1. More torque down low
2. Better tranny (carbon synchros, more aggressive gearing), no clutch buzz.
3. Better looking exterior IMO
4. Doesn't burn oil. Ap1s tend to eat a bit and you have to check it all the time
5. Better suspension, as in it won't oversteer as much as early AP1s
6. Better looking interior IMO
7. Early AP1s (00-01) had inadequate oil jets and a lot of the engines scored their bores if prolonged revving over 8000 occurs. Also some had spark plugs backing out due to wrong specs on torque.

The "better car" doesn't always mean funner though :D . AP1s have a lot of quircks but if you can live with those then its a tossup between the AP1/AP2.

SilverStreak

For the AP1 vs the AP2, I've driven both and it will depend what is more important to you, more raw sensory goodness or slightly more cush in town cruising.

Power: Really they are the same, the added trq of the AP2 doesn't really do anything, I prefer the more revy nature of the AP1. (even)

Suspension: AP1 is more raw, AP2 a bit more cush better for daily driving around town. At the end of the day on a track the AP2 is slightly faster due to the suspension changes (AP2)

Aesthetics: This one goes to the AP2 with the upgraded bumpers and lights. However, the AP1 still looks timeless and both will hold up to time very well (AP2)

Overall: I would say the AP2 takes it but it isn't worth the premium if there is one. You can get an AP2, slap on some coilovers, like the Bilstein PSS9s and have better feel than an AP2. You can also change the bumpers on the AP1 to go with an Amuse or ASM front and AP2 rears and again, looks better than the AP2. If cost is a factor, go with the AP1.

I think all of us who say we prefer whatever car should state whether it is our only car or if we drive something else on the side and what it is. If it is your only car, I think you'd prefer the AP2 to the AP1, if you guys know what I mean.

I also have a winter beater cavalier, but I drive my S2K most of the time, even in the winter.

I just noticed Luckystrike is selling a nice ap2 for a reasonable price, if I had a choice right now between a 03 and a 04, I would honestly say I would go for the 04, I drive mine everyday almost and I would want those little comfort items it comes with and i know if i bought a 03 I would be ending up buying new parts from the factory anyway to make it compare to the 04, oh yes one other thing about the 04+ is the changed rear suspension member.

Another thing is that I've been looking at the used car market for a while now, both in the US and CAN and I have noticed that there really aren't too much difference in the price (and sometimes none at all, factoring in taxes and what not you have to pay when importing). Particularly when I look at the market in Seattle, there is really not a substancial price difference with the cars in Calgary...certainly not worth the trip down there unless you're planning to vacation there as well. It seems the further South I go in the US, the cars do get cheaper.

My question is, should I still seriously consider going down to the US to get an s2000...am I reading the market wrong right now?

well because of the US the prices of the s2000 have dropped alot in calgary! not as low as in the US but after importing it will be about the same. So yeah try buying locally.

I was planning on selling my s2k, but now because of that one reason I wont sell my s2k anymore because it has lost soooooooooo much value in the last two years because of the US prices.

If I could do it all over again, I would get an AP2. The extra little things really make it better for everyday driving. I also think the AP2 looks WAY better than an AP1. The subtle cosmetic changes really work in helping to make the car look less dated.

AP2 is faster due to the shorter gearing of the transmission from 1-4. if you stick the AP2 tranny and diff on a AP1, the AP1 will be just as fast as an AP2.

It will be "faster" and "quicker". The AP1 will have 1000 rpm more to play with. Put in higher FD gear ratios and it'll be even quicker. (Faster and quicker are two different things.)

The stock AP2 is just a hair "quicker" than a stock AP1. However, the AP1 is just a hair faster than an AP2 due to the extra 1000 rpm at the top end. The AP2 is more likely to reach its geared top speed, while the AP1 is not. It will go only as fast as wind drag and available HP will allow. Some AP1s are stronger than others and thus, can go just a bit faster. Typically, both cars can achieve about 150 mph IF conditions are standardized (no wind, no incline, sea level, same road surface, long straight). A stronger AP1 will go faster than 150, while it doesn't matter how strong an AP2 is, it'll only go as fast as it's geared to go.

K, I was gonna buy an AP1 V2 myself, but after test driving a few at our altitudes, I decided I just couldn't do it. It has sooo little low end torque that it seriously feels like a Civic below VTEC. That's simply too frustrating for a car that looks as aggressive as the S2000. So I decided on an AP2. I'd say AP2 V2 is the best buy because of VSA - it really does come in handy.

LOL. Good luck. I thought that myself until I went there and actually saw the cars. The clean title ones would have panels with no VIN stickers and the so called low mileage ones would still be beat. The only ones that were actually cheap and in good shape had leins on them, which makes it next to impossible to import them, unless you plan on taking a month long trip down there. So yeah, good luck.

i prefer the ap2 as i do 100% of my driving on the street and i don't need that extra 1000 rpm for the track...

I have now converted to an AP2 front bumper and cannot decide on what lip to go with.

Just wondering if you guys can provide me with your opinions on which lip you favour the most:

APR front air dam (similar to the picture)

AP2 OEM lip

Thanks in advance

 depends on what else you have done to your car. if it's fairly stock i think oem looks best. CR for a mildly modified car. where did you get the ap2 bumper conversion?

6'3" might not work so well. I'm 5'11" and head room is right at the comfort limits for me.

Might want to go to a dealership and sit in a car first before driving all the way to Calgary.

You guys might want to compare inseems. Both are the same height but how you make up that height will determine if you will fit in this car. This car has quite a bit of leg room (seat moved all the way back), however, if you are short legged and long torsoed, your head will hit the roof. If you are very long legged and short torsoed, your knees may hit the underdash or steering column.

i dunno how i would describe it, i wear 33x34 jeans so i think i got pretty long legs but i also have a prett tall torso so im probly in the middle in terms of both. i really dont want to go to a dealership to sit in one hah the sales people here are retarded..if you tell them your interested but not sure if you want to buy just yet, they will just tell you to come back when your ready to buy, they dont like wasting thier time hah

Now, if only "dimi" will post up his info, you will know how you will fit. If he has the same or shorter inseam, since you are both the same overall height and since he says he fits, then you should also fit. If he has longer inseam, that means your torso will be longer and you will sit higher in the seat.
