I know this is no spotted thread but...

I was driving home today and I was stopped at the lights right on the corner of Northmount and Northland Dr, and then saw a red AP2 headed North on Northland Dr, and another red AP1 that turned onto Northland Dr just 2 seconds after.

This is not normal for me! I always thought I was the only S2000 driving around, I see maybe 2 S2000's a week if I'm lucky. Are the owners on Beyond? :O

Weird... on S2ki about 90% of the spotted thread in the Prairie Redliners is all Edmonton..

xviper

Edmonton has a huge contingency of S2000 owners who post on S2Ki. Unfortunately, they are mostly all talk and no action. They post about how great it would be to have a meet, but when it comes down to the crunch, few actually show up. Excitement is brisk before the meet and after the meet (if it goes at all), the excuses fly like migrating birds.
In Calgary, there is also a very large group of S2000 owners. However, here, these people are not a cohesive group in or out of the internet, very few actually knowing each other and those who do, either don't really care about getting together with other S2000 owners or they do their own thing in very small gatherings that are not widely publicized. They continue to gather not because they necessarily own S2000s anymore, but rather, because they have developed lasting friendships that have transcended the car. At a time when there were only about 50 S2000s in Calgary, about 20 of those owners would meet on a regular basis in varying numbers ranging from a few to all 20. Many of those 20 have moved on to other cars but still continue to float in and out of meets. The sociological, economical, cultural and age differences of S2000s owners today will always be factors that make apathy strong. Unlike some other marques, the S2000 alone, is not enough to draw people together these days (outside of internet banter). For many, interest in the car is quite transient and relatively short lived.

I usually give a wave or some gesture... but it's not often I even see any... I think you were the first s2k I actually drove beside in Calgary.

kinda became habit from living in California... EVERYONE throws up a peace sign or thumbs up usually.

What's funny is that on the weekend I'd be cruisin down the freeway and always see scenerios like a father/ young son driving in an S2k and they'd be the ones to honk and give a thumbs up.

Americans are way friendlier than Canadians though. All over the States, everyone would talk to me, s2k owner or not. People at gas stations, other s2k owners in parking lots, old ladies driving a different convertible...Whereas here in Canada, a lot of times I'll wave and just get a dirty or confused look back..

As many young S2k owners I saw... I saw just as many 50+ year old S2k owners.... and they'd always comment on it.

One old guy, must have been in his 60s looked over and said "Ugly car". He was driving an 08 with an aftermarket wing on it. I just laughed.

Anyone have a 02-03 ECU they want to sell? PM

dimi
09-21-2008, 01:14 PM
Well just did the oil bolts on my 01 yesterday and it took way longer than expected, with quite a few complications. This is how my time accounts, and the problems I had for you 00- mid 02 guys:

Removing oil pan bolts: 2.5 hours. SO many bolts 23-24. The two bolts that bolt the tranny to the oil pan were such a headache, and both were somehow stripped in the middle of their thread. Those 2 alone took an hour and a half. Prepare a can of Liquid wrench.

Removing the oil bolts and jets was pretty easy. Putting them back in: 4 hours. I had so many problems with #1 that at one point I thought I stripped the threads in the block and that I am totally fucked. Patience is the key here, you don't want to strip the threads. That's a new block, or you have to pull the engine either way to JB weld a new one in, thought I don't trust that method.
Finally I got so pissed off and discouraged I attempted to move the oil pickup out of the way. There are 3 bolts, BUT be very careful as I think it is attached to the timing chain and if you pry on it too hard you might break something. I pulled it out of the way just enough to be able to shove my whole ratchet in.

I got the bolts in and made sure the nipple is in. Torquing the bolts is not too hard. 16.2 N-m or 12lb/ft. Use a 3/8 drive for maximum accuracy.

Everything back together: 2 hours or so. Fitting the oil pan on is the hardest thing on the assembly and make sure when you are bolting it back on you use a star pattern so you seal it properly.

Oh yea also there is a black crossmember of some sort that has to be removed at first before you even remove the oil pan. This wasn't mentioned on the DIY and it took me some time to figure out that I needed to take it off. Maybe its just an aftermarket piece from the previous owner.

All in all it took me around 12 hours to do it alone. Some guys on s2ki claim they did this in 2.5-3 hours, but I just cannot see how that is possible so plan for a whole day. Xviper's DIY was awesome, and he will probably comment on some of the things that I have mentioned. I'm waiting the whole 3 days for the pan to seal vs the 24 hours that s2ki recommends and lets hope i haven't messed anything up.

PS: Do not do this alone. Some of the things involved would have been 100x easier with a helper.

xviper
09-21-2008, 04:11 PM
3 hours is if there are no problems whatsoever. This is rarely the case. I also stripped one of the tranny bolts, but I found a reasonable facsimile nearby. When I did my clutch job and put in my new AP2 tranny, I put a new OEM bolt back in. A lesson learned ................. oil the threads on all high torque bolts before installing.
I had the same just happen when I installed my high boost Vortech pulley and belt. Everything was going just fine till the tensioner screw seized and it sheared off in the middle. Stuff like this always adds more time to the job.

It's very easy to cross-thread those banjo bolts. One has to know when not to go any further. If there's any resistance before they are fully threaded, you know something is wrong and you start again.

dimi
09-22-2008, 05:50 PM
Well I poured the oil today and started it. It made a bang sound just as I was starting which scared the shit out of me, and an exhaust pop to go with it. So I turned the car off.

I turned it on 1 min later and everything was normal :dunno: I figure I moved the crankshaft a few times while I was under there to get better access and that's what could have caused it. Took it out for a ride, and up to 5000 rpm everything sounded just the same. No smoke out the exhaust just a bit of gas while it was warming up, but I have an after market exhaust too.

I also bent the oil pickup out of the way for a bit while installing #1 cylinder bolt, but it was installed back together and nothing seemed to be bent or out of place. Could this have thrown my timing off somehow? I was very careful while doing this and I think nothing was moved or messed up.

Am I being paranoid?

xviper
09-22-2008, 06:38 PM
The bang on start up was mostly likely due to you moving the crankshaft around to gain access to the banjo bolts. You most likely cranked it backwards at one point. Engines can react strangely sometimes when they are turned backwards.
The oil pump drive runs off the crankshaft. The pickup pipe would not affect this. However, you might want to check your operating oil pressure just to make sure the oil path not being restricted in some way.
The only real problem one can have with these oil jet bolts is that the spray nozzle MUST be perfectly seated in their location slots. If not, then the nozzle base will not seal with the face of the engine. Oil will not go through the nozzle, but rather, get sprayed down into the oil pan.

dimi
09-22-2008, 06:40 PM
Well it sounds like I have done everything the right way. I made sure 10 times that the nipple is seated on the oil jet before torquing. And yes I did turn the crankshaft both ways a turn probably.

I let my engine idle for 20 mins and its still at 3 bars so all should be good. Thanks a lot for the help!

PS: I Meant drive around and idle for 20 mins.

xviper
09-22-2008, 06:47 PM
"3 bars" is a vague indication of coolant temp. Oil pressure would be affected by the work you did. Oil temp can be directly related to coolant temp, but generally, there is a good bit of lag time and can be as much as 20 degrees difference.
Keep monitoring the oil pressure light. I take it you don't have any other gauges onboard that can indicate degrees? If the oil light ever flickers when hot at idle, that might by your first indication that the oil pickup has been compromised.

I'm gonna go for a longer ride and keep the revs down till I am sure everything is top notch.

Well everything seems to be in place. I let it idle for 15 mins, then drove it around slowly for another 20 mins. I got on the highway and did 1-3rd redline and it seemed strong. I guess this job is done. Thanks for the help viper.

I'm replacing my 01 plastic window with an EZ-TOP right now. According to the reviews and pics on s2ki.com, its a good top and looks like OEM. With a glass window, its $400 and change, which is way cheaper than the Robbins top and IMO looks just as good.

I'd like to know too! I wanna get rid of this plastic window ASAP! Is there any place around town to get it professionally installed?
