I say if your going to be practicing anything. Practice parallel parking the most.

Good luck.

Driving test yeah? Wasn't completely sure if you're talking written or what. It's pretty short, maybe half an hour or less. You'll go through a couple playground zones, so watch your speed, etc. Remember complete stops at stop signs, watch all the lines and stay fair distances from them. When you're turning left, remember to keep your wheels STRAIGHT, and always smooth lane changing and accelerating throughout. Shoulder check properly, and they also look for how much you eye the rear view mirror and speedometer. Every few seconds look at the speedometer, and look at the rear view mirror ever so often too. Know how to parallel park too (duh).

Any idea on how many mistakes you can make?

You can make a LOT of minor mistakes lol. I think it's like 20 points or so. But if you do a major mistake like not stop at a stop sign, or pedestrian crosswalk, you're done.

make sure you slow down at uncontrolled intersections, they will ding you if you dont...

Primavara
03-17-2007, 08:03 PM
On the park what if I nick the curb? Is that and instant fail?

Disoblige
03-17-2007, 08:06 PM
No actually, that's minor. They let you try again.

Make sure your relaxed, and just stay confident. Check your mirrors often and drive exactly the speed limit, unless conditions are poor. Set that parking brake when he makes you park on a incline/decline.

Good luck.

Cool. I'm most worried about the parallel park. If I fail whatever. At least I tried haha. Anyone got some good tips for the paralel park? Like when to turn and what not. I cant tell when the angle is 45.

watch for unmarked intersections, they got a few of my friends on that one, instant fail.:drama:

Parallel park they give you 3 tries. When I did mine there wasn't even a car behind me (I guess because they don't want you to hit someones car if you F up). It was in a residential area, there was a car parked ahead on the right, he told me to parallel park behind it.

Don't worry about it. Very easy.

DRIFT IT!!

What do you mean? Why did they fail? Not covering the brake or something?

Watch for crosswalks with flashing overhead lights too, if they are flashing make sure you're going 30 at the sign even if no one is crossing. Its auto fail for that even if nobodys crossing.

Ahh then it won't be that bad.
My test was 30 minutes around a residental neighbourhood full of playground zones so just make sure you watch your speed, look out for stop signs and all that good stuff.

When doing you hill and parallel park don't forget to signal coming out of them and for the hill don't foget to pull the e-brake, I got penalized for that.

Primavara

Yah, well I'm going in the morning to drive some more to make sure I got everything down.

RZRSHARP_SVX

just remember to relax you get 3 tries to get the parallle parking right. but if you get it right the first try you dont have to do it again.

Primavara
03-17-2007, 09:07 PM
Thats good to know. And do they make you do both hill parks?

RZRSHARP_SVX
03-17-2007, 09:10 PM
yes but its not always on a hill

Yah, but it's going to add up.

I wouldn't worry about the $50. Sure it adds up but once you actually get a car and get on the road, $50 will seem trivial when you factor in recurring costs like gas, maintenance and insurance.

The lady testing me didn't talk unless she wanted me to turn/park somewhere, it was a tad awkward and I thought she would fail me for sure when she put the visor down and the pens my mom had in the visor came down and hit her in the face haha.

How much do you think insurance will cost once I get it? I took drivers ed and passed both in class and in car. The car is a 4 door 92 Saturen.

ashee
03-17-2007, 10:03 PM
I'd say $1800 or so?
Are you getting collison on it?

Primavara
03-17-2007, 10:25 PM
Likley yeah. Jesus that's expensive 1800!!! What would it be without drivers ed.

ashee
03-17-2007, 10:27 PM
$1800 a year isn't really that bad for a first time driver?
It all depends on your age and stuff though.
Collison is, with my insurance company anyway, an extra $1000!

Holy shit. Theres no way I'll be able to afford 2800 per year haha. Guess the bus is still the way I'll be getting around.

You could get a scooter! I rocked a scooter for the first few years I drove, and I loved it..

Seriously tho, the test is a joke, just keep your eyes open and don't break any laws.

When I took drivers ed 2 years ago they had me make the letter "z" with my car and the curbs. That or they said to make an angle similar to a piece of pizza; not to big but not to small.

They will make you do both the uphill and downhill parking but like RZRSHARP_SVX said, it might not even be on a hill... mine wasn't.

A big thing they are looking for is that you are aware of your surroundings. Check your mirrors and speedometer often, cover your brake when going through an uncontrolled intersection and ALWAYS look both ways as your entering an intersection whether its uncontrolled or not.

Another big thing that not alot of people remember (I had a few friends fail because of it) is to make sure you come to a complete stop BEFORE the sidewalk as you leave the parking lot.

Good luck! Drive safe.

Sorry to double post but I just wanted to adress the insurance issue:

When I first got my licence (with drivers ed) basic insurance, PLPD, was 1400ish a year. With collision my insurance company wanted 2800ish a year. Now with one not at fault and one at fault accident (no tickets), I am paying 2200$ a year on my 1999 GMC for PLPD and was quoted something rediculous like 6g for full coverage. So drive safe and avoid any tickets/ accidents.

Yes insurance is a major expense in but dont forget about all the other little things that add up such as repairs, extras (like stereo stuff), tickets and most importantly fuel. With the rising price of gas, its becoming more and more expensive to own a vehicle

It's just a shitty car but the freedom to drive to school in the morning will be awesome. No more bus or ctrai

yeah that was what i was all about in high school, haha, i took mechanics though so i could fix my car for free, or just the costs of parts, i would suggest the same in high school, you learn stuff about cars and it saves you alot of money long term, like changing your own oil, and all that stuff, doing your own brakes and minor repairs.

Congrats. I was 10 points away from flunking! (For my actual drivers test, I didn't have gdl)

One thing I never knew was that you have to come to a complete stop when coming out of an alley. I never failed though. :D
