Hey Beyonders, I m just trying to get a general idea to how much you all spend on auto insurance. Tell us:
1) What you drive
2) One way or two way coverage
3) Amount you pay annually
4) What company are u with

& lastly have you ever lied about your driving record to an insurance broker to keep your premium down and have gotten away with it? (i.e. telling them that you have never been in any accidents or had never received any tickets.)

Cheers:thumbsup: !

robpark

1)99 M3
2) Full coverage, 1M Liab, $1000/$500 coll/comp
3)$150/mo.
4) TD Meloche Monnex

NEVER LIE... Standard practice is to pull your record during the application process. Even if they don't do it right away they will eventually. Lying to an insurer carries stiff penalties, not to mention, if something does happen and you have to claim, it gives them the right to void your insurance (material change of risk, I think).

OKay this is gonna be a silly question and possibly even dumb, but I have never been insured and have been involved in an auto accident with someone else's car, by "pulling my record" are they simply looking into my Alberta Operator Licence...?

If your claim has been reported and was dealt with through insurance before and your tickets are on file, even if you lie, you'll never get away with it. The insurance industry are not retards like yourself for trying to even think of a scam like that.

I would highly suggest you remove collision coverage off your vehicle. You drive a 18 year old car which is only worth probably inbetween $1500 - $2250 and if you were to be in an at-fault accident, you would have to pay out the first $500 anyways. Your car would most likely be written off and the insurance company will only give you a cheque for ~$1000 which is probably around the amount you're paying for collision coverage alone. As an insurance professional, i recommend to most people who have a 15+ year old vehicle (depending on value) to only carry Third party liability and comprehensive coverage.

As for me:

I'm under my parents policy only listed as a occasional driver.
1998 Honda Civic Si
20 years old, 1 at-fault accident but had accident forgiveness; 1 minor ticket
$1mill TPL / $500ded Coll / $250ded Comp

If i was on my own policy as primary driver w/ another company(Aviva), I would be paying $4200/yr. :thumbsdow

Hey guys, first post! I thought I could offer some input on this discussion -- I've been an insurance broker for 3 years.

When you setup an Auto policy, your broker has you sign a standard auto app. This authorizes them to check your driving abstract (meaning tickets) and run an insurance history report (called an AutoPlus). Tickets (ie. speeding) will stay on your driving record for 3 years from the date of conviction. Suspensions and impaired will stay on your record longer, but you cannot be charged for them after 3 years (with the exception of your insurance will be inherently higher since you lost insurance history during that time).

The AutoPlus system is an online system that tracks your insurance history based on your license #. The system goes waayy back, into the late 80's. Insurance companies share information through this system, and post any claims made against policies. However, the system is not 100% and it can often have errors. Bottom line though, if you lie to your insurance broker and this report is run by either your broker or your company they will be asking you some questions if you lied about no claims. And as mentioned, this is a material change in risk and your insurance coverage can be denied by the company if you lied on your signed application.

Some of the cheaper insurance companies known through the industry are Wawanesa and AMA. However, in particular, Wawanesa has a poor reputation for claims service. You get what you pay for in the end .. that doesn't mean people haven't had good experiences with Wawa, just that as a whole they have a poor claims service reputation.

Oh yah, the one way or two way coverage is a funny statement to me .. haven't heard that one before! We call it PL/PD (personal liability and property damage) which is all that you are required by law to carry (min. limit is $200K but nobody should have that low) -- this coverage only applies to the other person (third party) when you are negligent in an accident. The collision/comp/etc is called Section C coverage.

AMA is a few bucks more than TD plus mandatory membership fee.

But family's been with them over 20 years and service/claims has always been top notch. So it's worth a few bucks more.

well the insurance regulation in alberta only caps the rate for drivers under 25 for one way only... like for me if i was to add collision to my policy it would cost close to 1000 more a year.

This actually reminds me of that one member DAYCLONE who bought a 2001 bmw a couple months ago and totalled it recently.he only had liability cause hes under 25 and would had to pay around a 1000 more. being a young guy its gonna hit hard as he prolly spent all his money to get the car and now it is worthless.

Pretty much... yes, all I have is liability on the type S. Really, I find that liability only FORCES me to be more careful when im out on the roads since if I screw up im pretty much done for. But what im saying is that some people (me included) dont feel the need to have collision.

If i screw up and I have to pay outta of my own pocket for my car then I guess I have to own up for driving like an idiot.

I never knew about a Alumni discount. Is there anything on the U of C site that tells a person where they are eligible for the discounts?

It's a program that Meloche runs, U of C doesn't have much to do with it other than let you know it exists, and I only ever saw that on some brochures I got after graduating.

Meloche runs a Mount Royal College and U of C Alumni discount, its not a lot, but any discount is a nice discount.

1200 and some odd dollars per year for a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. I think it will be a bit more for my civic.

For pldp and fire and theft. not full coverage 1 million liability.
No windshield insurance. But i lost my licence and then got a stunting ticket the week after I got it back, back when I was 18 so it's starting to go down steadily since no tickets since that day.

How are you young guys getting such good rates for full coverage?!?!
Meloche Monnex wants 17xx for single coverage on a 2002 CR-V for me, 33xx full coverage (1000 deductible) on a new Civic....
My record is clean and I'm under 25 as well

^ Yeah I used to be a TD Meloche fan until I did some research and looked around. Im with State Farm entirely now.
My bike insurance went from $950 down to $260 a year. :nut:
Much the same with my car. Its best to call around, seriously.
TD sucks now; looking back. Although State Farm is a lot more unforgiving towards traffic tickets. :dunno:

I've tried but so far Meloche Monnex seems cheapest for me, State Farm wants about 4500 for the Civic 1000 deductible and gives free life insurance (I think they only give this for free if I move everything over).
