I had attended a seminar last night about starting your own business, there was some catch to it near the end(subtle) but still was pretty motivating. Finding a solid idea of what to sell that isn't a dime a dozen company seems to be hard.

I think it would be pretty cool to start a camera store, probably online first and then make a shop, expanding into a repair shop and further into industrial photo products.

If you guys had a chance to start any business you wanted, what would sell and/or service be?

I dont like that idea at all. Why would ppl goto a little no name Camera store when they can goto Bestbuy, future shop etc and buy one, thats probably cheaper. People dont like unknowns, I know I wouldnt buy a camera at a store I wasn't framiliar with. Keep thinking of idea's though! The only way to make a real living in this city, is on your own. Thats my opinion.

Well if you want a point and click type camera or know what you want then the big stores are fine. I would consider a smaller shop someone who is an expert in cameras and could offer better advice and make good recommendation for more enthusiest type people.

There are camera shops out there already though like Sineal and Vistek that have been around quite a while now.

Well, I'm sure you have a viable idea but it all depends on your business plan/model. I think you need to clearly define this if you want to be successful.

Are you looking for vague ideas or do you want someone to provide a clearly defined business plan for you or someone else to take?

Heck, for example, why not start another Calgary Car Forum!

I am moving to van island in a few months and I am going to be expanding my side biz there. I currently run a Bookkeeping Service and have been quit successful with it so far. This year I have expanded some of my services to include personal tax's as well as misc secretarial type services, it has kept me pretty busy. Where I am moving too is pretty remote, and I have made some contacts out there already. Pretty excited about working for my self and being able to dictate how I manage my days. You can't really get anywhere working for someone else! Good Luck with your camera store!

Thanks for the comments guy. The point of my question wasn't to design a plan online with public beyond(which = stupid) but just get a feel of what people would be interested in, should an opportunity/motivation come about to start your own business. I have an idea but I just bought the ball and needs a kick to get rolling.

EnRich I appreciate your feedback on the situation...a funny saying comes to mind "You can have all the right ideas in the world but someone is bound to disagree with you". But seriously, this isn't an argument but rather a sharing experience and/or thoughts of a future you wish you could have or are planning to have now.

I have my own basic plan of brands, target consumer, etc.

Funny thing about some of the "coaches" I met last night, they all gave me the sense of some conniving, backstabbing asshole you thought was your friend, with a Hyena-like aura if you will. Haha oops I did say that out loud?!

I want to open a cigar store + cigar club. But the city crushed that idea this year with the smoking ban. Essentially what I would do is have a cigar store but have a sort of back room for members of the cigar club where they have a private humidor. They grab the cigar they would like to smoke and head over to the bar area where you get your scotch or what ever drink and you socialise with the other cigar smokers there...:dunno:

Heli'Ho's FTW!

Portable "massage" parlor, perfect for landing near camps up north for the oil workers.

Buy a used Sea King from the military for dirt cheap, hire a few "masseuse's", and off we go!

If you have money, then pick something you enjoy or know alot about and build a Business from that. Remember, you'll have to spend some money in order to make money. If you are selling a product that is physical in nature, like cameras, be sure to remember that you will have to put in an inventory and assume start up costs. Budget for about $50 Grand, and prepare to wait for ROI of up to 6 months.

Now if you don't have Money, but are good at trading your Time for Money, think of a service that you can provide whereby which exchanging Time for work done will equal a Paycheck. A classic example of this would be an Accountant. People give you a box full of Bills, Receipts and Statements of Earnings, and you prepare their Taxes for Money. If they don't Pay you, all you will really lose is your Time.

With a Bricks and Mortar Business, if you are selling something and granting your customers Credit, if you don't get Paid you lose Time and Money.

One thing to always keep in mind is research. Too often people jump into Business without doing competitive analysis and end up gowing broke. Research the Industry or Service to the best of your abilities "Before" you do anything.

In other words, "Don't put the cart before the horse".

Me, I would love to learn how to Golf like Tiger Woods and Teach People to Golf. Time for Money.

Best Of Luck
