View Full Version : B16 Idle Concern

I have an 91 hatch with a b16,
When started it idles fine, but slightly ruff. Once it warms up, it quite often has trouble idling. The idle drops and ramps up eraticly. With the car just about stalling.
I am thinking perhaps the tps sensor?
I have just bought this car from a friend, it has been doing it for sometime. I am mechanically inclined. But have a lot of learning to do on the vtec/honda systems.
Thank You
Owen

More then likely you are correct with the tps sensor but you may want to check the spark plugs if they have not been changed in a while if they are slightly misfiring they will cause an erratic idle as well..
Check the TPS, Idle stabilizer valve, o2 seonsor

TPS= throtle position sensor.
ot but have u run the 1/4 in ur car? i started a thread about that the other day, cause i would like to do that swap into my ride heh
I was racing a guy with a B16 swap into a civic like yours and we were both runnin 15.9's
Car is deffinatly faster than that, the swap should be mid to low 15's but the weather conditions were less than ideal. I mean come on, an RSX-S running 16.1's?

At mission race way my car ran 14.8 last summer. With just intake/header/exhaust
But then the elevation is a lot lower. It has also ate rsx-s

Don't forget to check the IACV Idle air control Valve, my d16 was surging and I cleaned the screen of manifold scum.... seems to have done the trick
where are the TPS, MAP sensor and IACV on it and how do you recognize if any are failed/fix? My friend has a B16 civic with exactly the same problem.
Anyone? I'm gonna take a look at my friend's civic soon.

Did you do anything like try to adjust the idle when you first put the engine in.

I bought the car with engine already in place, but i know the guy who installed it was a mechanic. So I would imagine he did...
I'm actually starting to think, it does it more when warm than when cold...
When I have it at work to put the suspension in, I will check the vacumm lines, aswell as tps.

I suggest checking all your grounds. A bad ground will cause what you described (my CRX was doing what you described and it ended up being a bad ground). Also check things like your main relay. Are you getting a check engine light? Might also be the time to do some maintenance like fuel filter, new plugs, cap/rotor, etc.. Just some thoughts.
