McBain camera is selling D50 bodies for $549 and D50 w/18-55 for $649. I believe the D70s body is $649 as well. I have 2 friends wanting to get into photography but they both are on strict budgets for the time being, so I was immediately attracted to these cameras, especially the D50 for what I believe to be a good deal. The Rebel XT is still $650.

They are avid mountain bikers and will be looking to get some decent action shots most likely.

Is this as good of a deal as I think it is? Or just market price for a D50. My problem was even finding one still for sale at a reputable place. I don't think one camera is really much better than the other is it? I was going to suggest D50's to them over the D70s as well as save them $100, but I wanted to check with you guys first.

Thanks in advance.

I don't use Nikon, but me personally, I would get a D70s for the extra $100. It's more camera for hardly more money. I think it also has two wheels, which makes manual exposures much less cumbersome.

Yeah, I'd go for the D70s as well. A D50 body and used 18-70 makes a great starter kit as well.

I got to shoot with my buddys D70 and i think it was pretty sweet ass. Not as cool as my Canon though. :poosie:

What are the main differences between the D50 and 70 anyways? I have a D70 because I got a good deal used on it otherwise I was going to go with a 50.

One thing is that the D70s can do 1/8000 shutter and the D50 only 1/4000. Also the D70s can flash sync with 1/500sec if I rembmer correctly. The D50 though apparently has Matrix Metering II as opposed to regular Matrix Metering. Also the D70 has compact flash and the D50 uses SD cards. The D70 shoots at 3fps and the D50 2.5. That's all I can remember, but I'm sure others will correct me if any of it is incorrect or have anything to add. Both are apparently very good cameras which is why I posted here to see if for $100 one was that much better or not.

Both D50 and D70s do 1/500 flash sync.

I say the big advantage to the D70s is built-in wireless flash commander mode.
