I am not looking to scam microsoft, I have paid my 159.99 for XP Pro but they dont like the fact that I am a computer geek and switch computers every couple months or so.

So I dont think this counts as pirating or stealing

:bullshit:

but if it's not, call the 1-800 number that they have on the registration dealie, and they'll reset it for you provided you can give a decent explanation.

How is this BS?

it is not the error message that I have used it to many times, it is the one saying I have registered my copy of XP pro more than 25 times so I need a new copy.

I build computers and then sell them, thanks for your input

I guess after 25 times they do, it is probably how they decide if they were shared or not

when i called MS he said that I should just upgrade to vista, but Macs cannot run Vista yet, hence why I need a key, it is running right now but I keep getting the same error message

i dont buy it at all.

ive activated lots of xps in lots of conditions, and if its a legit key, i cant see why they would refuse.

pm me the activation code and ill call it in and get the code you enter to activate it.

and another thing, if you 'build computers all the time' you would know that all you have to do is back up one little file and you wouldnt have to activate again.

and finally, i dont think anyone is just going to 'give' you a key, but hey worth a try, i guess.

and that last line about 'upgrading to vista' is a laugh - no way did they say that

fair enough lol. sorry if i offended you.

Give them a call then, I've had to do it before b/c of my constant computer switching. Make sure have at least 1/2 hr or time, you'll most likely get put on hold. Then you talk to some rep who makes you read out close to 30-digit long combination or numbers and letters. after that they read one to you that you enter..... pain in the ass, takes AGES. but at least you'll regain use of your own legit key.

I dont do it professionally, i do it for gaming and the hell of doing it

this is the first time I have had this problem, hence why I dont know about 'a little back up' that exists

Like it says, I have probably had 10 or 12 machines in the last 4 years and with a few reformats it is probably been around 25 registers

Well, plain and simple.

If your key is expired or used more than 25 times. Get MS to unlock it. If they won't too bad. You either go buy a new copy or go use Linux.

Asking someone to give you their key is pirating.

Selling old computer(s) with a single XP key is pirating.

And read the EULA for XP and VISTA. It's state that it's 1 unique hardware hash/OS activation. The fact that they let you reinstall 25 times on various hardware is already VERY generous. Unless you have corporate license of XP, it's basically 1 NEW COPY of XP/new system. So everything time you have a motherboard change or more than 4 devices changed in the system, you ARE REQUIRED to BUY A NEW LICENSE of XP.

Like I said, you don't like it, go run Linux. Otherwise, follow the law.

No they like it very much. But you have to buy a new copy for every new system. You can't reuse.

He's right, mine expired too. Everytime I reload Windows with my key (yes, I bought it), I have to call the 1-800 number in the setup and bitch at them for 10 minutes before they give me a temporary one. Just call the number, they'll get you going.

Sometimes when i reinstall windows i have the phone in and other times i just restart the computer enter the number in again and it activated fine.

If you build and sell multiple computers and install the same copy of XP, that is pirating.

What if he had a new computer every 3 months for 4 years straight and had to install XP at 2+ times on each machine, but when he sold the machines he formatted the HD before selling them and just sold them as a used computer with no o/s?

Also, if he wants someone to give him a windows cd-key its not pirating if the person actually has a spare XP key with a COA and they physically give it to him... he can then put the new sticker on the side of his PC and activate it, it was not pirated or sold, simple installed on another PC, no different than upgrading your own PC.

But you know what? The whole story stinks. Who can afford to build a brand new pc for gaming every couple of months, plus all that other crap, and then goes to bitch about dropping $60 on an OEM copy of XP? Also, how many people really "switch" pc's every couple of months and have to do a complete reinstall and activation?

Anyone that is that much of a computer geek would have realized long ago that there ways and better ways to get around the activation process if they were doing rebuilds with that frequency.

So, the story doesn't add up. I can't believe that someone with the implied knowledge that comes with that many rebuilds would be soo entirely ignorant of the intricacies of the process that they'd have to come to a public forum, and ask for a key. Or that "poor" that they couldn't drop the $60 on the OEM copy of XP as a cost of upgrading on thier next "switch".

meh, could be a million different things, no ones ever gonna know but him.. what if he just surfs a lot of bad porn sites and has to reload xp every 2 weeks because of all the spyware/viruses he gets? we can all keep guessing, but all the guy needs is an xp licence.. maybe someone here wants to sell one for cheap.

I trust that all of you calling him a pirate have no music on their computer that they didn't directly rip onto it from a CD that they purchased, if not then please shut up.

As for the key, sorry don't have one.

Reinstall on the SAME hardware that create same hash doesn't violate EULA. Reinstall on NEW hardware does.

WTF has that got to do with the price of cheese in denmark?

And strangely enough, I'm listening to music right now that I didn't rip from a CD that I purchased. Kudos to ShoutCast and free internet radio.

Take your own advice.

You can pirate all you want, just don't cry when the ban hammer strikes.

look for volume licence editions of XP they were designed for mass roll outs of workstations and don't have to be activated.

The Professional and Home versions create a hash code of the id's from your CPU, motherboard and harddrive. You can change/upgrade video cards and ram and such without having to reactivate, but if the others change more then 25 times it gives you an error.

I have never had to call in to have the limit reset, but I have heard of it being done.

Microsoft Update keeps track of other users with that key.

You would need a much better explanation than that.
