My wife is Japanese and is having a difficult time trying to find a decent job/career. Her english is great, but she lacks North American experience. And no, she doesn't want to work at a Japanese restaurant. Her previous jobs were at different marketing firms and she was even a day time talk show host at one point. Can anyone here help? I think she'd be more content with a company that would require her Japanese skills. Any help appreciated!

Hi, you should try looking at www.neteller.com they have offices in Calgary. They are almost always looking for customer service representatives that speak japanese. Hope this helps.

Does she have any other marketable talents? Like accounting, reception, management? Does she want to continue with the marketing approach?

I vaguely remember doing a job search on workopolis a few months ago and they had an ad looking for someone fluent in Japanese and English. It wasn't this (http://search2.workopolis.com/jobshome/db/work.job_posting?pi_job_id=9059522&pi_search_id=690925514&pi_sort=POST_DATE&pi_curjob=1&pi_maxjob=3) one though.

Maybe try sending out cover letters and resumes to companies that are a little more global? Does she recognise any companies in Calgary that have offices in Japan as well? I personally hate doing cold calls, but it's worth a shot in this job market.

Golder Associates have locations all around the world. Otherwise I'd recommend a staffing agency like Mark Staffing. After doing some computer skills testing and an interview, they can vouch for your wife, get her foot in the door with a company that doesn't use newspaper ads or jobsites and who knows?

Good luck though!

My wife is japanese and enjoyed working at clothing retail, they wanted to make her manager only after a short time of being there. But we are moving so.. she left. She worked in a pharmacy as well but enjoyed clothing stores much more.

Pharmacy technician requires a small college term, but pays ok, easy going and in demand in calgary. maybe she might like that

Hey thank you for the replies!! Yes, I know of Neteller because they are always hiring, but I've heard some bad things about them. And thanks for the recommendations Amysicle. How do you know about Golder? The company I work for uses them for our GIS. My wife is not a "specialist" in any field except for maybe marketing and publishing, but we'll try an agency. Shaad, a pharmacy technician sounds like a great idea... never thought of that. I'll ask her about it. I was thinking that if she could order car parts from Japan that would be awesome! (For me..) Any vendors looking? hehe...

I was a temp there for a week. They seem to treat their staff pretty well, and everyone has shares or stock in the company.

They seem to have their fingers in quite a few things, so I figured they'd have a broader range of positions available that might appeal to your wife.

And a little more education never hurts, at least you'll have a bit of parchment to decorate your house.

I have a friend that works part time at the ATB call centre. Not sure if they actively recruit people who are fluent in different languages.

I would imagine Banff and Jasper will have a lot of openings in the service industry. Especially since the weather will be warming up very soon.
