So that new Flames Sports bar opens this weekend after 3 years of work. Just heard on the radio this morning that its going to blow peoples minds. Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard it has over 150 LCD tv's, a 30' High Def projection screen, private suites, a 5star restaurant and more.

Very cool.

That's the problem being 8 month behind in construction. It should have opened when season started.

Really looks like a classy place to go watch the game, and keeps the crazy drunks like at Shanks out of there. Looks great so far. Only stupid thing I hear they were considering was charging cover, worst idea ever.

Cover charge is a great idea. Keeps all the cheap fucks out.

They call this place an "entertainment venue" but it's essentially a pub with a theme. Maybe it's me being naive but I can't see people going there to just watch the game. People are going to eat and/or drink which as I've heard is already going to be expensive which would deter any "cheap bastards" from showing up.

First of all, that location is definitely cursed. Secondly, what marketing genius would name a bar after a team that plays a seasonal sport? Third, what is the realistic timeline that this bar hopes to achieve in terms of longevity? Fourth, why limit yourself to one sport and one team? Why not create a concept modeled after ESPN Zone, if that's what you're going after. In my opinion, this bar just shows how large the Flames bandwagon really is.

I am a little butt-hurt. But I have since gotten over it when the Oilers forgot how to win. In all honesty, this has nothing to do with being an Oilers fan. I would be just as skeptical if an Oilers Central opened up in Edmonton. I think it's irrational whatever team it focuses on.

They may want it to be an upscale sports bar, but in this city, those three words don't belong side by side. There are just going to be as my retards going here, then any other place in the city. I'm pretty sure the Palace started out as a upscale nightclub too, and look what happened to it.

And honestly, I totally agree with rm777. Making it a Calgary Flames specific sports bar is straight up retarded, but it's really too early to tell what it's going to turn into. Yeah the place might have a Flames theme to it, but I'm sure they will show other Hockey Games, or Sporting Events. Spending that much money, and only catering to the Flames would be a bad business decision, and hopefully these owners are not that stupid.

I'm kinda looking forward to seeing how it turns out, but the parking downtown is just going to get a whole lot worse.

ESPN Zone, FUCKEN AWESOME!! wish we had one here..

You can tell just by looking at it that it used to be a theatre! Closed in 1990, was around for like 70 years.

really, any bar that is 25+ is just full of cougars and loser old guys that have not found a life partner yet and troll the bars looking for gold diggers, really if they want to weed out the "little kids" they should make it 21+.

shit, after the hockey season is over they should just rename it cougar central until the next season

If they want to keep trouble out and go high class, doing 25+ would definitely make sense.

BTW, they use the Coach (As in Don, Joanne and the Coach on Lite 96) as spoke person in those radio ads. That should give you an idea who they're after.

But still, being sport theme is already tough. Pinning a single team to the name is even worst. Just think what kind of business they'll get if Flames screw up and not make it in playoffs. That place will be a graveyard for months.

How much you want to bet 25+ applies to guys only? :D

The space is much too large to discriminate against the people that have the most disposable income that they are willing to spend at the bar: 18-24. The 25+ concept has been tried over and over again, but I feel that it has never really been successful, especially at a "sports bar." :thumbsdow

I went last nite. It was packed with a healthy line-up. It is an awesome set-up. Its huge, and I do wonder how they are gonna keep the place filled after the hockey season. After midnite there was no line and quite a bit of room to walk/sit.

Atmosphere was great for a Flames fan. I felt like I was at the Saddledome. I'd bet that some Flames will show up after the game tonite.

Management is former Catch guys. A bunch of Ceili's and Met servers are there.

S4maniac
04-08-2007, 03:47 PM
Oh... and no specials. Typical sports bar food and an Earl's/Joeys type menu in the restaurant. Pints are $6.50 same as Met/Ceili's

For the people that have been there so far, how was the atmosphere? I have heard they are trying to make it as much like being at a Flames game as possible without acutally being there. I have heard they are planning on doing such things as having the jumbotron feed in there and other LCD signage. Are those up and running yet?

And for all the haters of the name/concept, from what I have heard it is going to be a year round sportsbar, with so many TVs that you can basically request any game anytime (soccer, rugby, baseball, football, boxing, mma etc).

When I am in Calgary this summer I am looking forward to checking it out.

Well if they wanted it to seem like you're actually at the game they succeeded. They have skyboxes and even the ring of fire on three of the four walls. The 50 ft screen is pretty awesome too. Little details like over-served guys wearing their Iginla jerseys and green hardhats dancing in the aisles are also included.

I was there last night. Great Atmosphere tons of screens but I would have to agree that the food so far is only okay. Didn't try the Wildfire Grill portion but your looking at $25 a plate plus drink plus appetizer and what not so you are probably looking at $40 a piece for dinner at WFG.

They told me that they will start their full menu next week so I'll wait until they are fully opened and some time to adjust and tweak before I give it a full rating

I went Wednesday night in the upstairs lounge booths. We had $11 burgers that were terrible (like cheap meat and way overcooked)...complained when the server asked us how they were and got a free meal. The manager even came and apologized and talked to us for a while.

I like the setup but there were too many senior citizens....a group of 50+ somethings in front of us kept standing up and blocking our view. I wish there were more actual hockey fans.
