Sounds like a bomb in the making already. Can't Hollywood come up with anything original anymore?

Oh well, with the Wachowski brothers directing, you know it's going to be special effects intensive. Whether that's a good thing or not, we'll see.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) -
Christina Ricci is joining "Matrix" creators Larry and Andy Wachowski's live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon "Speed Racer."

Emile Hirsch,
Susan Sarandon and
John Goodman already have boarded the high-octane Warner Bros. project, which is based on the anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences and later imported to the U.S.

"Speed" centers on a young race car driver, Speed (Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden vehicle Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed's girlfriend Trixie, his formidable ally on and off the track.

The show revolved around Speed's family. In the big-screen adaptation, Goodman will play Pops, a race car owner and builder. Sarandon is on board as Pops' wife, the backbone of the family as well as the Mach 5 Go Racing Team.

The Wachowskis, who are writing and directing, are eyeing a summer shoot in Berlin with a summer 2008 release.

The casting is a change in direction for Ricci, who has tended to star in such indie-oriented fare as "Monster," "Penelope" and the recent "Black Snake Moan." She also appeared on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," a turn that earned her an Emmy nomination last year.

Dear Hollywood,

For fuck's sake, WHY? Just leave Speed Racer alone, don't ruin it.

Also, if you make a live-action Astroboy movie, I'll be forced to kill you.

Haha, I was looking at my astroboy dvds after I saw the speedracer thing and thought the same thing.

It'll be a matter of time until Hollywood starts churning up sitcoms we grew up with, ie: Family Matters: The Movie; Full House; Full House 2: Gibbler's Revenge

This is what Bert Raccoon would look like if they made a movie about him.

No kidding, if this "dredge up old stuff" trend continues, we'll wind up watching a remake of Doogie Howser right after the remake of Coach and the remake of Who's The Boss. :banghead:

... Macross is off-limits as well. Assholes.

Also, ROFL at The Raccoons. I loved that show!

Go Speed Racer, Go: Movie Mach 5 debuts

Well, now you know what we'll be covering breathlessly post-Transformers. Shooting for the Wachowski brothers' live-action Speed Racer film begins next week in Germany, and Warner Bros. has released the first official pic of the Mach 5 hero car.

Awesome.

It's a modern take on the Speed's iconic ride, and is sleeker and way badder-looking than the Mach 5 prototype created in 1999 (and on permanent display at the Petersen museum in L.A.), which is more faithful to the original 'toon car. As you can see, the movie car retains the same general look as the hand-drawn Mach 5, but incorporates details like a racy full-wraparound windscreen, sleek rearview mirrors, and chromed dubs shod in Yokohama Advans. It looks absolutely killer. As the film's star Emile Hirsch (he plays Speed) summarizes, "Yeah. They got the car right."

Indeed. Hopefully Chim Chim doesn't make a mess on the seats....

Thanks for the tip, Joe!

Astroboy is being optioned out to Genndy Tartakovsky (Starwars clone wars, Samurai Jack) to be done in 3D or traditional animation. Which isn't to say is bad, him being the master of cartoon action.

As for speed racer the live action movie? I'll pass judgment when trailers are out. The brothers (well.. Larry's a cross dresser now..) screwed up on the last two matrix films, but they did good work with V for Vendetta.

I loved Perfect Strangers. Balki was on the surreal life and he's a bit of a perv.

Yeah, I saw the trailer a while back, it actually doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. I was afraid that they'd lose the cartoon feel of the original, but this looks pretty badass.
