Does that make more sense?

The truck I should have paid with cash but didnt so that is something I am working to pay off.

What watch do you guys prefer? An Omega 2254.50 or a Breitling Superocean (not my watches btw)?

Launched by Milus in 2008, the Tirion TriRetrograde is now available in a new version.

The case, in stainless steel, measures 45mm. It has a sapphire crystal and display back, and is water resistant to 30 meters.

The movement is a Swiss automatic (base ETA) that features the exclusive to Milus caliber 3838 module which runs the tri-retrograde seconds display

The dial is done on two different levels: central part with “soleil” decoration and external part with fine stamped decoration in a cream color with transferred index and the Arabic numerals 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 in anthracite color. Retrograde seconds display on three engraved bridges. Large calendar between 4 and 5 o’clock with figures covered in SuperLuminova.

For some reason I thought of Rage when I saw this...LOL

Hold the "Black Cobra" face on (very prudently) and you stare at two unusual indications: jumping hours and retrograde minutes. Bright yellow glowing from black is the only luminous evidence emitting from this reptilian machine. The hours and minutes count down the time by moving linearly. Sounds simple doesn't it?

It took more than three years of research and development to overcome the technical challenges involved in linearly indicating the hours and minutes in this fashion. The resolution of three engineering puzzles allowed the URWERK team to master the reptilian beast: The movement develops enough energy to operate the imposing minute cylinder, which is much heavier than a traditional hand, but where to find additional energy to function the jumping hour cylinder?

A toothed rack moves vertically to rotate the minutes, but how to ensure that it operates smoothly in all positions, despite the varying effects of the immutable laws of gravity?
Having solved the power issues related to operating the jumping hours, how to ensure that there is enough energy available for the world-premiere digital seconds?

A toothed rack/lever, visible through a display panel on the side of the "Black Cobra" transfers energy from the movement to the minute cylinder. The honeycomb structure of the lever offers the two seemingly contradictory properties of lightness and rigidity. Rigidity to accurately convey the profile of the triple cam to the minute cylinder, and extremely light/low mass so as to consume as little energy as possible and so that position, gravity and shocks have minimal effect. The mechanism used is reminiscent of those seen in automata. A toothed segment at the end of a rack exactly moves up and down following the path drawn by the triple cam - a path that has been plotted from 104 reference points. Each of the three cams drives the rack for exactly 60 minutes. At precisely 60 minutes the rack drops on the cam provoking the opposite tooth-end of the rack to fall, which triggers the retrograde mechanism and rotates the minute cylinder. And all of this happens in just 1/10th of a second!

The energy released by the retrograde mechanism is recovered and used to power the rotation of the jumping hour cylinder. Visible through a display panel in the side of the case, a 12 pointed star and positioning spring are the only distinguishable components of this innovative mechanism for recycling energy.

The Black Cobra is a formidable beast and was extremely difficult for the team at URWERK to master. It took three years of work and ten prototypes, to finish

The case is done in grey gold treated with AlTiN (Aluminium Titane Nitride), base in PE-CVD treated titanium. Hardness of gold: 380 Vickers, hardness of AlTiN: 3,800 Vickers. It measures 54mm x 43mm x 15.5mm.

Movement is the Urwerk in-house caliber UR-8.02 with 37 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 39 hours. The minute and hour cylinders are done in aluminium elox (Anodicaly Inactivated Aluminium), with cylinder brackets in titanium and a honeycombed rack and seconds disk in nickel manufactured using photolithography. The base plate in ARCAP P40 treated with black PVD with a triple cam in beryllium bronze and an unidirectional winding rotor mass regulated by a pneumatic brake “Fly Brake”. Indications are: linear jumping hours, linear retrograde minutes and seconds displayed both lineally and digitally, a world first.

The bridges are decorated with perlage then treated with black PVD, movement components decorated with perlage, micro-blasted, complication components diamond-cut and mirror polished, gold case micro-basted then treated with AlTiN, titanium base plate treated with PE-CVD.

It's not. I think you even PM'd me about buying my Omega when I had it for sale here, so I could buy the Breitling. I currently own a superocean chrono and although I think it's a beautiful watch, the quality is not on par with Omega.

Truth is, you can't go wrong with either. Most watches in this price range are built well.

If they travel to Switzerland they should ship it from there, it's part of the EFTA so you'll save on import duties.

Yea, it's a 5.5% duty for swiss watches from most countries. Exempt if it's shipped from Switzerland. That's a few hundred bucks on your watch.

You'll still need to pay GST tho.

So a month and a half ago, I was chatting with the Hublot CEO and North American Sales Director on a Hublot watch idea that I had come up with, a model that doesn't exist, but would be the perfect sports/daily watch for me. I showed them photoshops of what it looks like, and after a bit of back and forth, they happily agreed to build it for me!

Fast forward to today, the NA Sales Director was in town to chat with Calgary Jewellery (who is now a Hublot dealer) gave me a call and I met up with him and chatted about Hublot and watches, and check out some really cool stuff that they had. We get to Calgary Jewellery and to my surprise, my custom built watch had shown up this morning!

So, here she is, my 1 of 1, Hublot "Beyond" Bang haha. Its a full ceramic case, with a carbon fibre dial, silver and red details, and a rubber strap with a crocodile outer skin on the strap. Unfortunately, I only had my iPhone with me, so the pictures are crap. Will take some real pics shortly!

It has the HUB44 movement, same as most Big Bangs. This is a one off watch, 1 of 1. This is not going to be a normal production run watch.

I thought about doing a limited run of watches for Beyond, but I don't think there are that many people willing to drop that much money on a watch. Maybe in another 10 years haha. The Porsche Club of America recently did a limited edition TAG Heuer watch, 55 pieces for 55 years. Would definately be cool if Beyond members can support something like that.

The F1 line uses quartz movements, so it's cheap to fix. The movements itself costs anywhere from $20 to $100 plus labour so it's pretty cheap to repair. Any local watchmaker can fix it.

Since you bought it off Amazon, there is no TAG Heuer warranty on it. It'll be cheaper to fix it locally than to send it off.

I wished I had picked up a few watches when I was in St Marten and St Thomas. Prices were great there.

The problem was our dollar was sitting at $1.25 when I was there thanks to the US financial crisis... haha

wasn't THAT much cheaper though after declaring it at custom. 5% duty + 5% GST.

Hawaii is still one of the cheapest places to get luxury goods. Cheap to fly there, cheap to stay there and prices are lower than the mainland.

What are your thought if any on Ulysse Nardin watches?

I have been looking at the gold classico with the white face brown strap purely for a simple dress watch. ive never owned one nor do i know anyone that has, so if you know anything, like what to look for or problem areas etc etc that would be great even comparables or value wise how are they? its a bit more than my omega but i kinda dont like wearing an orange watch when im dressing up i usually end up putting on my cheap gold no name one i got in mexico as it ends up looking less tacky.

CAD4,800 for a Bell & Ross, I think that's a bit too much. Same price with fx in HK you can get a Submariner.

Ok, I'll throw this one out to the Beyond watch crowd.. Not a huge watch guy, (only watch is an older Tag Kirium F1 I rarely wear) but I figured Im do for a nice treat, and my money is better spent on a watch then upgrading turbos again.
If you were to spend 3-7k, what would you get?

I like fairly plain watches.. Some Panerais catch my eye.. but I know nothing about them.

So.. not too flashy.. not too busy.. more of a classic style.

Any thoughts??

Hi all...long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a quick question. My watch collection is quite small right now, but my favourite is a 1950's Wittnauer with a manual wind movement.

I've noticed over the last day or so that this watch has not been keeping accurate time, even when it's fully wound. I can actually hear that it's not ticking as fast as it should be.

Does anyone know of a reputable place where I can bring this watch to be serviced or looked at?

Thanks!

Your best bet would be Joe at the Sears watch repair in Chinook Center or Andre at the Swiss Watch Clinic on the corner of 14th street and 17th Ave SW (below the Mothi Mahal Indian restaurant).

Both of those guys are well trained, have access to the right parts, are honest and will be much less expensive than sending it off to the factory for repair or some other place in town that will try and take advantage of you.

Well after looking and researching i have found the watch i want to buy. I am going to get a Tag Heuer Carrera. I have narrowed it down to a particular style and know exactly what i want.

Now, where can i get the best deal? I had read a post from rage saying only a fool pays full price. Well...i am not no fool!

During the course of trying it one i was told by a sales lady that she could offer me $350 off. That seemed like an ok deal to me. Is it? or do they have a little more flex when i comes down to it.

Another question i had is if it is really worth buying retail as opposed to buying online. I could buy one new online for around $1000 cheaper. Now is it worth losing the 2 year warranty for a substantial savings?

Also is used worth looking at?

You should be able to get 25% off at a local authorized dealer very easily. If you are really good at negotiating, and the store wants the sale, then you might get 30%.

Getting any more of discount than 25% - 30% is tough unless you have a friend at the store, or you are a good customer and spends lots of money there.

Since I'm the resident TAG expert, I can give you some pointers. Pacman has got the discount levels pretty spot on. The big question is now, local, or online.

For online purchases, remember to add up the cost of exchange (you purchase US$ at a few % higher than posted rates), shipping, and duty/taxes to make a fair comparison. On a typical Carerra, the savings aren't that much. In fact, I wouldn't bother with online shopping unless the watch was at least $5k retail.

Having said that, buying local has it's advantages. You're not going to pay for bracelet resizing, shipping for warranty work, or a quick polish. With online purchases, the shops are grey market, and you don't get any warranty at all.

TAG's are pretty reliable, they use tried and tested ETA movements in most of the Carrera line (with the exception of the Calibre 360 and Calibre S), and you *probably* won't have any problems. I've owned over 20 TAGs, and have only needed to use warranty once on a watch where the rotor screw came loose. YMMV.

If you're interested in getting a TAG locally, let me know, I can refer you to someone to make sure you get a good discount.

Good luck!

This is how i was leaning towards anyways. At 25% off buying new local and with warrenty is the best option. I have found a few used mint ones for ~$1700 US which is a good deal but they are used. I would spend the extra bank for a brand new one for sure. Thanks rage for the info. Ill PM you!

rage2

Right, about used ones. Be *very* careful. There's a lot of fake Carerras out there, and they look 99% spot on. The Carerras use an ETA 7750 movement, which has been cloned, so even the movement looks right.

I recently picked up an Oris TT3 F1 w/ a 645 Calibre - ETA 2834-2 & a Hamilton Khaki King Scuba w/ a ETA 2836-2

Both are of really nice build quality, though the hamilton being close to $500 cheaper, and both keep very good time as this 282x/3x movement is quite a robust and proven movement.

Both have skeleton caseback, saphire crystals and full solid link bracelets.

Both are about 41/42mm and I'm happy with both..

However, I still seem to turn to my trusty Orient 3 star as my beater watch, as it seems to keep as good of time as the more expensive swiss movements and really looks sharp.

right now my Tag Heuer 2000 quartz (with a new silicone diver strap) and B&M w/ a ETA 2892A2 are collecting dust :P

Mind you, when I go on diving vacations, nothing I trust more on keeping my dive time than my quartz Tag with huge lume numbers and rating of 200m. However I may never buy another quartz watch unless its a special edition luminox.

So far my favorite affordable Brand is probably hamilton... they have handsome designs, are part of the swatch company and use ETA movements obviously, are a relatively known yet subtle name, and are very reasonabily priced for a quality product.

In a jewellery shop in Montreal, I had ask a watch maker his opinion on hamilton.
He picked up two watches, one Lord Hamilton and another Chrono Longines, and said... simular cases, simular bands/bracelets and the same Valjoux 7750 movement.... Why would you pay an extra $1000 more for the longines? That to me was convincing enough to not hestitate to buy their discounted King Scuba.

My other favorite for the more privilidged brands is probably Bell & Ross & IWC. I likely will be looking for a Portuguese in the short future.

Asian folks wear Rolexes.

This is true, I have a 16610... but never really wear it
I've had it serviced and the band/case repolished and figured I'll leave it in its pretty box for special occations... but there are so many other watches to wear, and never get asked if they're fake lol

Its all brand recognition and smart pragmatic product marketing with them. The 3135 is built inhouse and is too pretty to be hidden under a stainless case, but it really is no nicer nor accurate than a 2892A2... & the band on the 16610 feels cheap, as does the bezel :P Only recently they went to ceramic bezels and solid links, after probably close to 60 years at this point.

Zeneith make their own Chrono movements... they made them for the Rolex Daytona years ago.

However the "swatch brand propriatary" mandate is really going to mark a new Era in this game.
Breitling now has its own movements, probably mostly cannabalising ebaches, and even Oris is putting an inferior (IMO) movement from Selita in their latest divers series, such as the SW200, and likely anything new.

I wonder how many companies may just purchaes ebache Orient/Seiko Jap parts, then re-assemble them in their own propriatry fashion (lol) in Helvetica.
