Seiko makes awesome watches. Probably one of the most reliable pieces on the planet. Here's a watch at the top of my wish list, a seiko no less - check out that sweep!

Personally, I'm not digging the thick profile (assumed it's because of the awesome mechanism) but it's an awesome watch nonetheless!

You'll see them pop up on timezone from time to time. The one I posted just sold on Timezone for $2200 (asking price). Other spring drives can be had for as low as $1300 used, but not as nice as the one above. I was about 24 hours too late on the one I posted as it sold in a couple days and I've been unable to find one since (other than new, about 5-6k online).

MASTERPIECE COLLECTION "MP-01"

"More watchmaking, more mastery, more innovation…", was how Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, defined the future of Hublot a few months ago.

Following on from the BIG BANG, KING POWER and CLASSIC FUSION collections, Hublot is now presenting the fourth new line of watches, entitled MASTERPIECE.

As a result of reinforcing the manufacture's workforce in 2010 with a team of 30 staff of the highest level entirely dedicated to Grand Complications, Hublot is already (less than one year after their arrival) inaugurating this new line of watches, with an exceptional first piece dubbed MP-01 (as in MasterPiece No.1).

For the occasion, Hublot is presenting for the first time in its history a barrel-shaped piece, with a curved case made entirely from titanium. The column wheel chronograph movement is also barrel-shaped, with the even rarer distinction of being curved to follow the contours of the piece. Dubbed HUB5100, it was developed and manufactured entirely by Hublot, and comprises 384 components, with a total of 43 jewels. Thanks to its three barrels working in series, this exceptional calibre offers a 10-day power reserve, an indicator hand for which is situated on the back of the piece.

From an aesthetic point of view, the watch dial was skilfully openworked by expert hands so that the fine mechanics of the chronograph can be admired. There are three counters indicating: the chronograph seconds at 3 o'clock and the chronograph minutes at 9 o'clock, along with a small seconds counter at 6 o'clock. Another special feature to highlight is the indexes, which continue beyond the titanium bezel. An aluminium "metal grid" placed around the bezel rim rounds off the resolutely dynamic and distinguished design of this first piece, produced in a numbered series of just 100 pieces. Due to the complexity of their construction, only one or two models in the MASTERPIECE collection should be released every year.

TAG Heuer Carrera Mikrograph

Like the Carrera 360, the Mikrograph has 2 escapements, but unlike the 360, both are visible in the caseback. The standard timekeeping escapement works at 28,800bph, while the 2nd chrono specific escapement operates at 360,000bph, allowing the chronograph to measure time at 1/100ths of a second. Unlike the 360, where the 1/100th counter was at the 6 oclock subdial, the Mikrograph will have the 1/100th counter on the big second hand. That big blue hand there sweeps once every second when the chrono is activated, making it much easier to see the 1/100th second reading when you stop the chrono.

I am looking for a new watch as my old Esquire (had for 11 years) cost me $300 is ready to be retired. I like the Movado Juro and I just noticed this one at Costco. It was around $600 but I am sure I can get one for a better price and also be able to use my credit card (points) to purchase it instead.

Any of you have a place you would recommend for buying watches online or the best local place you shop?

Thanks!

Are you having doubts too? Because Automatics for <500 aren't known for longevity.

Bought three Fossil Automatics at 150-200 each and 2 are screwy (one is late/won't power up, the other's second timer doesn't work)

Haven't heard of Swiss Legend, coupe but it looks good! If it lasts long, then it's a steal of a deal!

The movement in those watches is a shitty Chinese brand. I wouldn't expect it to last for more than a few years. You want to find a watch that uses an ETA SA movement or a swiss in-house ($$) maker.

The ETAs are extremely dependable and will give you decades of service with proper care.

Yea, that's a marketing myth that's been pushed by the Swiss movement houses. No different than the Alberta Beef myth, or the Diamonds are Forever myth.

I believe that watch comes with a Seagull movement. The only problem with chinese movements is that they pump out so many, most of them have poor lubrication out of the box. Take it to a watchsmith, get it cleaned, lubricated, and regulated, and it'll perform as well as a swiss movement. $50-60 service.

Seagull has some pretty amazing movements that they've made in house, minute repeaters, double tourbillons, flying tourbillons, for a fraction of the price of the swiss houses.

All this coming from a Swiss watch snob. ;)

Seriously, there's only a small handful of swiss houses that's made all of these different complications. Best part is, you can own a watch with a Seagull tourbillon for < $1k. Compared to a minumum $60k entry point for a Swiss tourbillon.

It's just too bad their own watches are so damn ugly. They really need to hire a good designer to make their shit pretty.

...and by $1K you probably mean $100.

I have some pretty awesome looking tourbillons that are sub 100. I will post some pics later but amazingly, most of my seagull watches are more accurate than my Oris watches :( Parnis is one of my favorite cheap watch brands. Most of the time you can find their watches for sub 70US, they look great and their accuracy is usually within 6 seconds a day. That is a lot better than those terrible ST200 movements!

bAAg1teInZo

They are fantastic looking watches, and if they break in a year or so I won't cry. Most Parnis watches are pretty big though. I think that three or four of mine are 43MM or bigger.

As for swiss legend...I don't want to be a hater, but their are neither swiss, and in the watch world they are not a legend. IMO there is usually better options out there.

That's accurate, with exception to the Orient Star line which uses a few "premium" in house movements.

For a few hundred dollars, I'd much rather buy a Seiko or Citizen than a Swiss Legend. If the budget is stretched to around $500, many Tissot's and a few Seiko Prospex and Orient Star models are within striking range.

Nothing special, but a classic...

JFK Commemorative piece

http://www.omegawatches.com/fileadmin/images/watches/soldier-detail/51653250002001-20.png

50 years ago today, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was wearing this watch when sworn in as the 35th President of the United States. Now you can recapture that moment in time — and the class of Kennedy's Camelot — with the Omega JFK Watch ($9,100). Featuring a clean, numberless silver dial, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a yellow gold case, and a stately leather strap, this commemorative timepiece will have you looking as presidential as possible, and not in a nutsack-cutting, riding a wire fence sort of way.

Think I might try to pick up a strap similar to the Grand Carrera to replace the OEM rubber job.

The rubber clad croc + red stitching is really nice.

That would be awesome. I'd love to see one on someone's wrist to see how it looks. Thanks.

Wow, that is a pretty nice watch for $150.

Weird. Just noticed that too. Even the "new" monster (SNZF47K1) has a mineral crystal. Wonder why they'd do that on an otherwise impressive watch.

Surprising that the one you linked goes for $150. I see them sell on timezone all the time for more than that, used :dunno:

Love the carreras. The model you purchased is the last of the current design, as it's being replaced by the new 1887 in the next year. It'll be a classic for sure.

As for the strap, I actually have a spare one with no buckle. I'll have to see if it fits the carerra, pretty sure the grand carerra straps aren't interchangeable.

Nice watch Adam!

Here is another option......

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Di-Modell-Rallye-Black-Watch-Strap-Red-Stitch-19mm-E0-/150453062288

I wear the version with the black stitching on my speedy pro, and it's a great quality strap for the price.

The guy on Ebay must have ordered a custom lot with red stitching as nobody else seems to have them........

@rage, oh really? Nice, I would be interested in that.
I think you're right about the GC and Carrera straps not being interchangeable, I'm pretty sure the GC is 22mm between the lugs, whereas the Carrera is 20mm.

I love the GC strap though, it's perfect, especially with the titanium clasp.
They retail well over $500 from what I've seen.

This is actually my first Tag, and I was hoping you would chime in with some info. I did zero research before I bought this, didn't even price shop, which is not like me at all. Total impulse purchase. I saw a similar one in Tourneau on Oahu a couple years ago and I regretted not picking it up then, so I bought this one after about 10 seconds of deliberation.

@JD, thanks man, long time no talk too!
That strap looks great. I think the best fit for this watch would be a padded leather strap with red stitching and a deployant clasp. The perf leather & red stitching is a bit busy for my particular taste.

Here is another option, that will be much less expensive than the Tag factory strap. There is one that is a black gator grain with red stitching.......

Cost is probably around $50

Hirsch makes straps for most of the big brands like Tag, Omega etc

Yea, not selling my strap haha. My GC Calibre 36 came with that strap and I purchased the rubber strap to make it look more like the concept watch. I think it was over $500 when you add the cost of the titanium deployment as well, and that's after discount.

If you look back further in this thread, both ICEBERG and I had our eyes on the exact same watch. I knew that with the introduction of the Calibre 1887 that this would be the last of the current line of Carreras, which I love. I ended up going with a LE version of it instead, the Lewis Hamilton 2008 F1 Championship edition.

haha, yea, I've lost track long ago.

It's not easy taking pics of all the watches together, I've tried, and it takes forever to setup because there are so many. Here's a Hublot family shot, a little more managable.

http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/hublot/64.jpg

An older TAG Heuer family shot, which is missing another 10 or so since the pic was shot.

I have a hard time trying to remember what those other 10 are... haha.

bottom right on the "tag family" shot..........is that a handwind Carrera vintage or one of the reissues?

rage2
01-24-2011, 11:36 AM
It's a reissue of the '64 Carrera. Arguably the best re-edition Heuer that TAG has released. Even more accurate than the 40th Anniversary Monaco.

It's so nice to look at, but it's way too small at 36mm, I wear it only a few times a year.

Nice, so it's the one with the handwind lemania movement that goes in the speedy pro?

I've never held one, but have read they wear a bit small at 36mm. That watch has always interested me, as I really like that movement.

I've got a couple of speedy's and a Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute with the same movement. The Navitimer has a modified gear as it's a 24 hour dial, which is impossible to tell the time on.

I think that collection is worth more than my house.

How do you even decide what watch to wear when you have 30+ pieces?

rage2
01-24-2011, 04:00 PM
It's kinda sad, but I actually have a process. Basically decide before Friday, go and take 5 out of storage, put 5 back in, and rotate through those 5 during the week.

Well sometimes it's 5, sometimes it's 2, depends on the mood I guess lol.

The stainless ones gets the least amount of wear since they scratch so easy. The ceramics gets the most. There are a few really rare pieces that have never been worn.

Realistically? Nothing. You can get ceramic watches for $100. Of course, that wouldn't make much business sense, so there's a significant gap between different types of materials... the more "exotic", the bigger the gap. In the case of ceramics for Hublot, here's what the prices looks like for your basic Big Bang:

$12,000 - Stainless Steel Case and Bezel
$13,000 - Stainless Steel Case, Ceramic Bezel
$15,000 - Ceramic Case + Bezel

Other materials, $16k for tungsten, $20k for tantalum, $25k for cermet (what they make ammunition with), $42k for platinum, goes on and on haha.

Just picked up a couple Steinhart watches. I was so impressed with these watches I ended up buying the white faced one a couple weeks after the black one.

Excellent build quality and prices at around $500-1500. All with swiss eta movements, many with manual winding mechanisms which is a first for me but very cool. Accuracy is top notch and build quality rivals watches 5x the price. On to a couple pics:

would you mind telling me where did you get the Steinhart? I'm interested on the standard Nav_b one.

just a history info but the Steinhart was one of the watches that were issued by the German Air Ministry during World War II to Air Crews for specific long range flying missions.

I had the chance of buying an authentic WW2 one but turned it down as it was around $800

VAT is a euro tax, and no we don't have to pay it. Shipping is pricey at $30 euros and you will get hit with some customs/duty when it arrives too.

Of course you usually won't have a problem. But if you come across the border and they think you're importing it (no proof that you're travelling with it), customs has been known to cut the strap up, or confiscate the watch.

Pain in the ass but totally worth it!
