A whole lotta bling for the ladies.

The Constellation 35 mm Automatic Co-Axial Chronograph is a sports watch that exudes contemporary sophistication with a luxurious touch. The opulent combination of 18-carat red gold with a rich chocolate brown dial and sporty rubber strap is set alight with the fire of diamonds, a look that will take you from day to evening in style. And as women today rightly expect, the movement is also a superior creation. This COSC certified chronometer is powered by OMEGA’s exceptional self-winding Calibre 3313, equipped with a Co-Axial escapement. This design classic is now presented in a 35 mm case size: ideal for ladies who are looking for a bigger watch but not willing to sacrifice femininity.

The Constellation “claws” or “griffes” set with 64 diamonds (0.33 carats) are one of the iconic features of this perennial Omega design, first introduced in 1982 in the Constellation Line. Characteristic of the fluid lines of the Constellation, the strap is neatly integrated into the case by way of two half-moon facets that form an elegant transition between the two. Excellence in design marks this watch, a philosophy that beyond the sleek and smooth lines of the watch, is patent in details such as the contrast between the highly polished gold chronograph push buttons, the crown, the inner bezel and the matt satin finish of the case. Even the crown is set with a briolette diamond and 32 diamonds, that total 1.43 carats, adorn the bezel.

Some nice watches. As my name suggest, I am a huge watch fanatic. I've collected pretty much everything (minus tourbillon movements because they're at least $100k each).

Now, my biggest beef with these luxury watches is the price. I honestly question what makes a OP VIII cal on a Panerai far more superior/expensive than an ETA 2824-2 on a Tissot. Why? Because one is inhouse and COSC certified? Big deal. The complication on the movement is no better than the ETA, and the ETA is just as reliable and long lasting. I would only buy watches that I think are best value for the buck. Unless there's some grand complication movement wise that gives me incentive to spend big bucks, I tend to avoid the popular Rolex, Panerai, Breitling, etc. Oh well, just my opinion of course.

If you're looking for a watch, Tissot is the best bang for the buck.

As for watches I will probably pick up one day

I agree with you, although I'm guilty of owing overpriced ETA based watches such as Omega, Breitling etc. However, over the past month, I've cut my watches from 10 down to 3 and it will probably stay that way.

Why does a Hamilton with a Unitas handwind movement cost 1/20th the price of a Panerai with the exact same Unitas movement? Same thing with Breitling using a stock $40 ETA 2824 movement (with "Breitling" engraved on the rotor) and then charging $4,000 for the watch where you can buy a Tissot for $350 with the exact same movement.

Gone are the days when these big brand watch companies actually produced unique, high quality "tool watches" that differentiated themselves from the lower priced brands.

Now, brands like Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Oris, Panerai etc are just over priced status symbols......which is fine, but they are no better in quality/technology than a $200 automatic Tissot, Seiko, Hamilton, Certina etc.

No worries :) All watch fanatics have ventured there at some point. I used to own a Rolex, Pams, IWC port, etc. Then again, I was getting into the hobby at that time and didn't really know a whole lot about the watches I owned or the industry.

The rotor engraving is the funniest bit. I've had ADs tell me that is why the watches cost so much...it's because of the "extra touch."

Seikos are great watches! An example would be a Seiko diver watch. You can compare the quality, from movement to stainless steel to water resistance to competitors 10 times more expensive. If I can find a good automatic Seiko diver watch in Calgary, I would buy one.

In my opinion Seiko makes some of the best watches in the world. Their automatic movements are fantastic and their prices are very good.

I don't know what you mean by class, but I don't think they ever wanted to aim for the crowd looking for a status symbol. They make good, reliable timepieces that last forever.

Has anybody tried some of the Russian Mechanicals out there?

I am a fan of large diameter chronographs and really like the looks of the Poljots and some of the Moscow Classics. They seem to have a pretty good rep for the money and must be one of the cheapest mechanical pilots' watches out there. I was thinking of picking this up just to see if I like them.

Since I am not quite willing to drop what I would need to to get a Breitling Emergency Mission, this might be an interesting addition for about $250 - it has a huge 47mm case, a 3105 movement, a crystal back and looks like a Russian IWC:

Good quality watches and great "bang for buck".

I've owned quite a few of the Seiko Divers (Model SKX 007) over the years and you just can't beat them. The diver retails in Canada for $595, and you can pick them up brand new for $150 online. If it had "Omega" or "Rolex" on the dial....it would sell for $2,500 or more.

Assuming we're talking about Mechanical watches here...

First and foremost, the movement needs to function for a long time (in spite of being well oiled). Good movements withstand the test of time, can keep to its schedule "tune-up" without issue. It does not necessarily keep perfect time, since no mechanical watch will keep perfect time, even if it is COSC.

ETA movements are well known to be workhorses and they last a very long time. This is a testament to good engineering.

I have no idea if the Russian watches have their own inhouse movements, or if they buy it from a Russian supplier (who design clones of well known movements such as ETA or Valjoux), or if they actually have well known movements in the watches.

I'm not necessarily putting down clone movements. The Chinese seagull movements are quite good, and they're usually clones of popular movements. Usually with clone movements (or any movement for that matter), if they are well oiled, they should last you a long time.

Depends on what your Authorized Dealers tell you. I get my watches serviced once every 5 years, but everyone is different. I know some friends who get theirs serviced once every 7 years (I'm not sure I would go that long). Servicing is just basically having the watchmaker clean and re-oil the watch movement for you. A lot of high end watches will require you to send it back to the watch brand for servicing. I used to have a IWC portuguese that I sent back to IWC for servicing. If you want to find out where you can get your watch serviced, you can always ask the Authorized Dealer you bought it from.

Nice review - I think that I might throw a little caution to the wind and pick one up next payday.

I don't mind winding each morning - or every second as it looks like it has a two day reserve. I am fond of mechanical things that need a little attention like that (I own a Ducati and a Land Rover).

Thank you for finding that for me!

Well guys, I recently broke my Mickey Mouse watch (dead serious) that my parents gave to me when I was 11 and am about to splurge 5-6 thousand on a watch that will last me a few more decades. I was looking at some of the entry level Cartier's. Before I go out and actually spend the money, do you guys have recommendations on something simple, non-blinging, and can match with everything? Preferably in gun metal or dark silver of course.

Wow, Just saw this and I must say I'm a huge fan and hope that they release it this year.

Anyways, I'm not a watch fanatic nor do I plan to become a serious collector of watches. I just want to tell time :p

Movement ? No clue what you guys are talking about, but I just want something insanely simple, something that I can like I said, wear for several decades like my Mickey Mouse watch.

I went downtown today and looked at a few, these being the few that actually pricked my interest.

The Rolex Air King or Submariner

Cartier's Ballon Bleu in Steel or Silver (not sure if its out yet, read about it in GQ)

if u want one that doesnt stick out dont go for the first one, surprisingly that rolex catches most peoples attention even though it looks pretty regular
plus that cartier looks nice!

I love diver style watches, and I still prefer the omega seamaster over any submariner, but given your choices i'd also take the submariner.

At first it was a bit too blingy for me (the band is polished and looks a little too shiny)
but I love the face.

I just bought this watch its German and made by Stuhrling. i thought it would be a nice watch that i can wear every day and not really worry about it and it was only $200

It has:
-automatic
-stainless steel case with screw-down crown and screw-down back
-water resistant rated to 100M or 330 Ft
-scratchproof thick Sapphire crystal
-luminous hands
-Thirty-Five [35] Jewel automatic movement
-43mm across without the crown or crown guard, and 53mm from top to bottom

Due to the bright light box the pics were taken in, the rubber Diver's strap is really red and not orange as it looks in the photos.

I love that watch. Did you get the large or small version? I have the large Chrono on ss braclet and it gets more wrist time then some of my more expensive pieces.

It's automatic, so it isn't going to be a thin watch. However, it should be fine under a dress shirt. My panerai (which is a pretty big watch) fits under my dress shirt fine.

The one thing I like about this watch is the fact that the AR comes off it very nicely. The blue hue is a bit more noticeable than other watches (much like the breitlings).

Planet Oceans are nice pieces. When I first started this hobby, I contemplated on buying a 42.5mm PO with Orange bezel and SS.

Hi CSMRX7,

The Montblanc is a great watch. It is actually a thick watch at about 14.5mm. The Montblanc and my OMEGA PO are the same tickness. I think montblanc is 43mm and my PO is 45.5mm. I like large watches on my wrist. I have almost a 8" wrist so i wear bigger watches.

The PO is like a brick. To keep the weight down on it i went with the rubber strap instead of the bracelet. Montblanc looks great under a suit. Both great watches. I hate going to Calgary Jewellery, they give me such a good deal and because of that i end up walking from there with a big VISA bill.:D

Cheers,

Yes, it's real duct tape :D I think it's a really nice watch, love the look and the wear of it (I have thick wrists, make your obligatory jokes now... done :P) and I actually prefer it over a lot of the Nixon designs out there o_O

I can probably answer this for you.

The regular Planet Oceans in Calgary cost around $4,000 to $4,500. And because this one is the James Bond Planet Ocean (which is probably limited), I would say around $5500 to $6000. So it isn't worth it to buy from a Canadian Jeweler. I would say look around the internet. You can usually find them for under $4000usd. And since the Canadian currency is strong right now, probably a good time to buy, if you are looking to do so.

I think the one from the goldeneye was the quartz model. You can find a used quartz on e-bay like for $800-$1000. Autos will run little higher at $1200-$1300....

If you want new. Calgary jewellery has the quartz for $2000 and the Auto for $2900. But you can get 25-30% off those prices.

Good luck,
