Good watches but pricey for what you get. No real history behind them to warrant such an expensive piece. Lumtec makes a similar watch for $500 that looks better IMO.

*** HELP ME Watch Gurus!! ***

I saw this watch a year back, and fell in love instantly. Now, my in-laws want to buy this for me as a graduation gift. The retail is $600. My question is that, is it worth $600 or is the bulk of the price tag because of the brand? The issue is that there is only one in North America right now at the NY Ferrari Store, and they need to know soon if I want it. (Specs below)

http://www.mucy.eu/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Ferrari-Paddock-Chronograph-Carbon-2.jpg

IMO, it's not worth the price for a quartz watch, swiss or otherwise. There are far better watches, automatic or quartz, to be had for $600. On top of that, the PVD will look like shit with even limited wrist time unless you are extremely careful. Again, just my opinion for what its worth.

Weapon_R
06-01-2011, 08:47 PM
If it's as hard to find as you say it is, take it. $600 is not a lot of money for something you like so much. The reality is, like many watches, it can be found with similar specs (but not the same brand) for under $100

I got a question for you watch gurus. The watch I recently received as a grad gift turns out to be faulty so I think I'll return it and buy another one. Any of you have any recommendations?

I'd like to spend at maximum 500 dollars, and I don't want it to be overly large. The watch I'm returning is a Tissot prs200 so I'd like something along those lines hopefully.

In that price range, I like the mid-range Victorinox/Swiss Army watches. YOu can usually get 30% off the MSRP at the local stores selling them.

There are some automatics like the Victorinox Ambassador (not the XL or the Chronograph which are quite large) is a nice size at 41mm and also the Chrono Classic quartz.

What about another Tissot?

I wouldn't mind another Tissot, but i was just wondering if there was anything a bit more... contemporary looking for the price range. I might spend up to 600 maximum actually, but I doubt that extra 100 dollars would do very much anyways.

Also, how do you go about getting the discounts? I've heard you can get a discount on watches too, but can you haggle at watch stores? I just called a jeweler store in Calgary about another Tissot watch and she told me she'd be able to offer me some sort of discount but wouldn't specify how much of one until i talked to her in person. Do they generally offer the 25% or is this something I have to bargain for?

It shouldn't be too hard to get 25% on a Tissot. Just tell the sales person that another Tissot dealer (there are lots of them in Calgary) is going to give a discount and ask if they can match it.

The Canaidan MSRP on a stainless steel submariner is $8,410. It's not easy to get good discounts on the stainless steel sports models, as the dealers don't seem to have a problem selling them. 10% off seems to be the standard discount price if you are lucky.

It's getting a bit silly with the recent Rolex price increases. $8,500 for a stainless steel, mass produced watch? It was only a few years ago when the sub cost $5,000.........

you're confusing kinetic with automatic. Kinetic watches still run on a battery.

I needed something that had a bit of water resistance, as my other watches would leak like a sieve if anywhere close to water.

This one came up for a steal on the watch forums, so I snagged it. Orange isn't really my thing, and I have no use for all the "touch" functions, but it's a cool watch, especially the lume on the bezel and dial.

Sizing the rubber strap was a bit tricky. One wrong cut, and you have to buy a new strap........

Can anybody recommend a good quality, decently price watch winder??

I've been looking online quite a bit for the past little while but i'm unable to pick a good solid one. I've been on wolfdesigns.com and read the reviews on it, seems pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I don't want to shell out too much cash for it but if it looks good, quality is really good then I don't mind.

I've gone one of the single Wolf Designs winders. I've only used it once or twice (most of my watches are handwind chronographs) but it seems to work fairly well. The quality is good, but definitely not in the $399 MSRP they are asking. I'd say it's worth $50 to $80 on a good day

Quality is good, looks really good IMO. The inside looks a little cheaper but it does the job.

Thanks
I got their Viceroy single. Ordered through Birks downtown. I think their quality is good. Don't have anything else to compare to though. Their customer service is amazing. The winder came with a regular size cuff. It was a little big so I emailed them to order the small cuff. The customer rep sent me one free of charge even though I didn't buy directly from them. I thought the package got lost cause the wait was a little long so I emailed and she sent another cuff free of charge. In the end both showed up at my door step.

Should probably spend the money on a house first though, haha

Vincent Perriard and crew have apparently gone from overseeing the Concord C1 QuantumGravity watch and its fluorescent liquid battery gauge to designing another high end watch that combines mechanical action and fluid measurement with the HYT H1. This hand-wound timepiece has a 65 hour power reserve and displays the time via pumping bellows that push bright green fluorescine past the time markers. A rendered video embedded after the break does more to explain how the watch works, but may not help you figure out its rumored $45k price tag.

Anybody know where I can see a nice collection of Seiko 5's locally? Or any great competitors for the Seiko 5?

My dad's birthday is coming up.

Where would I go to find Hamiltons locally? I want to take a look at the classic railroad as I'm thinking it might fit what I'm looking for (yes yes, I'm a train geek, I know). Would that fall in to the standard 25-35% off type of category?

I definitely would Not get a Invicta. Just google why Invicta's are bad or "Invicta lies" and you will get a load of results.

They knock off the hard work and design of reputable companies and are usually very shitty in quality.

I believe Calgary Jewellery is a Hamilton dealer.

Thanks, I flipped through the pages of this thread, seems that Hamilton is a pretty decent brand, is that accurate in your opinion? The Railroad Classic uses the ETA A07.211 according to their site, which might as well be written in sandscript. Is that good or bad?

Well, went down to Calgary Jewelers yesterday. Decided on a Hamilton Jazzmaster, went home and ran it by the wife...and bought it anyway, lol. Snapped a quick shot when I got it home:

^^^ Nice watch. Do you mind telling me what you paid for it? I keep eyeballing one everynow and again, and I really like the simplicity of the Jazzmaster series. I was looking on Amazon, but I think I will buy local as then service, warrenty and future purchases should in theory be easier and better.

I got about 27% off MSRP without asking...it's almost identical to the Classic Railroad, except that the Jazzmaster is 42mm and the Classic Railroad is 46(keeping in mind I don't know enough about watches to actually know how they differ :P). I love it, the wife, not so much.

Funny, I don't like the leather straps...I'll get a picture of it on my wrist a little later.
