Fuck..who knew buying an automatic watch around the $500 range would be so damn hard. I don't even know anymore, almost about to give up. lol

Although admittedly, I don't know too much about movements at all.

haha yea lots of choices indeed, actually just went on their website today to buy it, they are out of stock until October. Funny thing was I was on their website yesterday and you could still buy one:banghead:

I checked it out an hour or so ago when I read your post and it was still available at the time!

The Chrono is available though and shot them an email asking if the brown strap can be switched for a different one. If the answer is positive, it might just sway me a little bit more towards it.

I am actually getting sick of looking at all these watches now and not being able to make up my mind. lol

im still on the fence on whether i should get 2 decent watches(victorinox and hamilton) or just go the cheaper route and just go with a LUM-TEC or a higher end Hamilton.

im pretty sure ive decided i want an automatic, thats the only thing ive decided lol

That Victorinox is actually on sale at ashford.

They got good prices going on, definitely check it out.

I went in to the mall today to look at some and only liked one Tissot and that too wasn't that nice. Deff. gonna be an online buy for me and I've decided to make up my mind on one before the end of the day.

If you guys have some opinions about the few watches I posted above, feel free to throw them at me cause I could use some. lol

I deff want an automatic too. And in terms of whether to get two ok watches vs one good watch. My vote is for the latter, I rather have 1, but really nice. Just a personal choice of course.

Oh wow, how have I not heard of ashford before??? And now, thanks to YOU (good and bad way) my options list just got more confusing as well.

How is Ashford to deal with? Customer service wise? Shipping?

I've never dealt with them before, only just came across it yesterday while searching for watches. I've read tons of reviews and everything seems really good.

Moreover, search for their coupons and they actually have coupons of $50 off or 10% off certain watches.

i would rather have 1 reallly good watch, but the thought of having 2 still really good watches for the same price as one or less, really gets me thinking.

also, IMO if you are looking at $500 autos, i suggest you look more into LUM-TEC. they have some pretty nice ones for around $500

I'd suggest checking out Tissot as well, I love the shit out of mine...but I don't think they'd have much in the "blacked out" category.

Although I've never worn or tried the brand, Michael Kors might have something up your alley as well as other fashion watch brands (A|X, Hugo Boss, etc).

Victorinox has some black PVD model with nicely finished ETA automatic movements. They MSRP in the $1,000 to $1,700 price range, but you can find them brand spanking new on Ebay for $400 to $700 quite easily.

I'd go Hugo before checking out Michael Kors. The rose gold finishes they have easily fade, which I use as a bench-mark for their QC.

Any mechanical watch will have the sweep hand. Some of the Bulova Precisionist quartz watches have a center seconds hand that sweeps.

10-26-2012, 10:16 AM
If you want a truly continuous sweep, I think Seiko Spring Drive is still the only game in town.

eiysa101: have you seen the "continuous sweep" on a Rolex? When I first saw it years ago, I was quite disappointed haha. Up to that point I had only seen quartz watches close up, this continuous sweep is really a series of little steps instead of a larger step of a quartz, advancing 8 ticks a second. No, it doesn't have the tick... tick... tick... like a quartz watch, but a whole bunch of tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick... like tiny little helicopter.

Alright, he just got back to me. He said the PVD will eventually wear through, and start to look awful over time. Its also un-repairable. Basically short of changing the battery, thats about the extent of it. Since if it ever stops working, it cant be serviced, so you'll need a new movement.

Cool watch though, but he said to keep that in mind.

Yeah, anything plated at all will eventually wear through, but if you want a black watch you basically have no choice unless it's plastic/rubber.

All quartz watches are basically unrepairable, but the movement itself (some times whole watch) is probably less pricey than getting a luxury automatic serviced by manufacturer (at least hundreds of dollars every few years).

I'd just keep that in mind, and buy whatever watch looks good to you. If you're looking for an heirloom piece to pass down, that Citizen probably isn't the best way to go. But if you're looking for something cool looking that'll last at least a few years, it's not a bad choice.

I'm currently looking around for a solar quartz of some sort too for every day casual banging around. Kinetic would just piss me off, worst of both worlds, needs battery and requires movement to charge. Solar quartz at least provides a much more maintenance free option on paper.

It's a deal breaker for me whenever a watch has it.

I totally agree. I bought an Oris watch and wanted to put a NATO strap on it. I've seen it done but you have to cut notches in the strap. Won't buy another watch with proprietary strap.

Straps can be $20. They can be $2,000. Depends what it's made of, who it's made by, and just how badly you want it.

$95 wouldn't faze me for a watch like that.

I'm still unsure if I should snipe it or not... PHP160k (~$4kCDN)

Also, several limited editions of Omega Speedmaster's and a Daytona for PHP500k and PHP1.1M!!! =O

There are also faux-Rolex's, fake Patek's... Grade-A Replica for $500 haha.

The reps i got in Manila were / are awesome, really good quality, I am pretty shocked they still run today. That greenhills mall where I got them is sooooo sketch though. I seriously had one guy there pimping his sister on me, and I caught one guy trying to pick my pocket, security was all over him when we started to scuffle. was pretty freaking funny. But the reps there are pretty nice, and if you can haggle, CHEAP!

Yup. I like big watches. currently wearing a Nixon 51-30. it is a 51MM watch.

I bought one of those back in October. I loved the idea of having a huge watch. Didn't make it outta the parking lot at Chinook and took it back. (Then bought a new mtn. bike later that day) Way too big. I'm a big guy, but IMO I'm too tall and gotta pack on a few more pounds before I can pull that one off. Let alone driving with that thing on, very un-enjoyable.

I have been wearing mine for just over a month, almost every day. the damn thing weighs 10.5oz, but I honestly love it, and don't even notice the weight when I am wearing it, but it is the first thing anyone says when I take it off to show someone. And the size looks appropriate for my size. too much smaller and it looks like I am wearing a woman's watch.

Those two are the ones that my friends keep asking about too!lol

The Mickey Mouse watch is something my father picked up when the family went down to Disneyland. My mother has a smaller gold one, and they bought me a kids plastic one. Needless to say, the plastic one is nowhere to be found, and the gold one my mother still wears once in a while.

As for the pocket watch, I will have to get some more information from my parents. So far, all i know is that it is quartz. But i'll find more out for you.

Damn, you just reminded me I have a Batman watch my dad got me from California from when the 1989 movie came out. I should go digging for it. I'm pretty sure I didn't toss it.

I'm thinking I really like the Zenith El Primero BigDate Special.

Anyone know where in the city I might find something like this? Or what about online? I've bought from AuthenticWatches.com before but they don't seem to carry this particular one and I haven't had any experience with any other sites out there.

There are some interesting things happening at SIHH 2013.

Omega has designed a few prototypes of a new movement which resists magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. Where the Milgauss and Ingenieur use a faraday cage to shield the movement, the new variation of the Aqua Terra will house the 8508 movement which is primarily made of parts which do not react to magnetic fields.

http://blog.perpetuelle.com/watches/the-new-omega-caliber-8508-anti-magnetic-watch-movement/

It will be interesting to see if Omega implements this across their entire catalogue as they have slowly done with the co-axial escapement or if it will be offered on only a few select models. The latter seems to be the industry norm, particularly since parachrom/nivarox/silicon springs are starting to be used.

I love SIHH. Need to make a trip to Geneva and Basel one day.

My favorites so far...

IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month. IWC has been making the most affordable Perpetual Calendars, and this one has a pretty cool disc movement where it saves a bit of energy daily which gets unleashed at the end of the month to rotate the discs. And sorta affordable in the mid 5 fig range.

TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Chronograph. My next watch. I've been in all the TAG Q&A Sessions complaining about a lack of a CF offering. Finally, they are coming out with one, even tho it's still a concept. The process is similar (less complex and cheaper to mass produce) than the AP Forged Carbon, and IMO looks much better than the Hublot CF execution, which literally is taking CF sheets and laying them then compressing them down. The CF weave pattern is too large and distracting on something as small as a watch, where as the TAG and AP method looks better. The whole thing (minus the crystal and movement) is only 19g in weight!

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Edition. Another LE from TAG, well not really. It'll be 1 year production run only, low production, but unnumbered. Basically the CF watch in a normal case. The new design is interesting, with the crown and chrono buttons up top like a stopwatch. Not sure how it'll wear till I try it out.
