I had a decent Hublot collection at the time and wanted to build a watch that didn't exist. PShopped a concept using existing production parts from various watches, and Hublot built it for me and delivered it on my birthday in person.

It was a pretty cool experience, the sales director for Hublot arrived in town under the guise of showing me some prototype watches (I got to try out the Unico prototype), and after it was done they brought my custom watch out and my wallet got a lot lighter lol.

I had this done before the rappers and b-ballers took over the brand. They won't do custom watches anymore unless you're spending millions on the brand. So I got lucky.

Gotcha...

It's bonus time at work. I'm hoping I can sneak a Monaco or an Aquaracer diver passed the wife. Are there any good reputable sources for used Tags?

rage2

I can help you out when you're ready. Monaco's are fairly easy, there's not really a good 1:1 fake out there due to the movement it uses and it's unusual size.

I'm looking at picking up a Hublot pretty soon here. Still trying to decide on which model I like most and need to make a trip down to Calgary Jewelers to try some on. I've just been browsing the selection on Swissluxury.com and was wondering if anyone could chime in on how the prices there compare to what can be had locally.

Some of the posts early on mention most watches can be purchased at a 25-30% discount locally depending on manufacturer. Does anyone (probably Rage) know if that applies with Hublots?

Also, diamond bezels, too flashy?

I would choose the watch you want, bring the model # to Jeff @ CJ, and get a quote. Compare the price between online (don't forget shipping duty and GST) and at CJ and buy that way. I've only purchased online when it's a sold out limited edition watch that CJ can't get for me. They've been really good to me with pricing.

Jeff hooked me up during the holidays when I bought an Omega Seamaster PO and Tag Heuer (his and hers).

Definitely go with Jeff at CJ

If only between these 3, Lum-Tec. Only because its not AS ugly as the other ones, even though its not the greatest looking itself.

It looks like you dont care whether its quartz or automatic so IMO i would look at something a bit more higher end than TW Steel and Nixon.

Maybe Tissot or Hamilton, they are both in your price range and a hell of alot classier than those other ones. unless you want to spend $700 on a fashion watch, thats up to you.

edit: plus that dildo of a crown on the TW is hideous. thats just my own pet peeve though, im getting through it lol

For Baselworld, is it just an exhibition show or are you able to purchase items when you're there as well?

Also, is there an incentive to stay there for the whole week?

It's primarily for manufacturers to show new or revised models which will be available for purchase in the near future. Of course, if you're in Basel, you'll have a good variety of shops to visit, including those with more interesting pre-owned or vintage inventory.

I'd love to get to BaselWorld, it just happens at the wrong time of the year!

A day or two would allow you to see the majority, but you might like to pick the days of or after the unveilings of certain manufacturers in whom you're interested. The few folks I know who stay for the entire convention are working in the industry.

Joe is at south centre now.

You cannot remove any inventory from the show, it's to show people the new products.

Thanks. A bit too rich for my blood, I would like something in the 4 figure range, perhaps the regular 42 mm Titanium (I have tiny 6.25 inch wrists anyways).

How do Hublot's (and the Classic Fusion in particular) fare holding their resale value, in comparison to an Omega Seamaster or Rolex Sub?

rage2
12-24-2013, 09:34 PM
It depends on how desperate you are to sell. There's a lot more Rolex and Omega buyers than Hublot buyers. Resale value is on par with most brands if you're patient, and choosing the more rare and desirable watches will appreciate in value. Unfortunately, there's only a small number of Hublots that fall in that category.

Hublot follows the Rolex formula of bumping up prices yearly to control depreciation, so you can sell for close to the buying price after around 4-5 years. I see watches sitting for around 4-6 months on a typical sale. I've also gotten away with robbery during the recession when people needed to dump watches and were desperate.

flipstah
12-25-2013, 12:11 AM
Damn, might snap a used Hublot if the price is right. Its cheap for four-digits but I'm gunning for something else right now.

rage2

The recession is over, so it'll be a while before you see prices bottom out that much again. Coupled with a weak Euro at the time, my best "steal" was a Steel Ceramic Big Bang ($14,600 MSRP) for about $3800. I can flip that watch today for about $8k easy haha.

On order? That's an old school Heuer Monaco PVD, last of the original Monacos before they were phased out due to shitty sales. Only ~10 out there. There was no indication that these were even real until Jack Heuer confirmed that a small # left the factory in this configuration. It's a funny model because it's not even a Chronomatic Calibre 11/12 model, just a 7750 movement in there, but commands way more $ than the Chronomatics.

Huge collector's watch, one of the more expensive vintage Heuers out there.

This Astronomical Watch Shows Our Solar System Orbiting the Sun

Midnight Planétarium is an incredible timepiece that features six bejewelled planets in our solar system accurately rotating around our Sun. The watch was created by Van Cleef & Arpels in partnership with Christiaan van der Klaauw.

After three years of work, Midnight Planétarium was unveiled at the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), held every January in Geneva. The watch contains 396 separate parts and features the six closest planets accurately orbiting the sun.

Why were Uranus and Neptune not included? Because you would hardly seem them ever move as Uranus takes over 84 years to make a single rotation of the sun while Neptune takes an astonishing 164 years!

As for the planets that are featured, they will make a full rotation on the watch as follows:

Mercury: every 88 days
Venus: every 224 days
Earth: every 365 days
Mars: every 687 days
Jupiter: every 12 years
Saturn: every 29 years

Each of the planets are represented by precious and semi-precious stones, ranging from red jasper to serpentine and turquoise. There is also a ‘lucky day’ feature that uses the bezel to allow owners to select any day of the year as your ‘lucky day’ and the Earth will fall underneath the painted star (seen in pics # 1,7,8) on the watch’s crystal on that day every year.

Before you rush out to buy one for your stargazing friend, make sure you can afford the staggering $245,000 price tag!

Where's a good place, either local or online, to safely source used watches? WUS forums is the only one I can think of but that's risky on its' own merit as well.

Caveat emptor... WUS and TimeZone have treated me well over the years. PayPal stepped in for a refund only once.

Getting to know a good dealer (who operates more as a revolving collector) is worthwhile.

What are you looking for?

Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition

seriously one of the very few watches that I would be willing to spend $8000
maybe I'll wait for the 50th anniversary

Great looking Omega, only problem with them is that they're following the whole release a limited edition for the sake of a limited edition game.

I'm looking for a watch that is very resilient and impact resistant. I've had to replace about 5-6 crystals over the past few years so I need a daily that can take a bit of a hit. Something along the lines of a Casio Shock-G but a bit dressier. Suggestions?

What's your budget and you just want a durable but classy watch, right?

Any watch with a sapphire crystal would fit your criteria.

Nope, that model so far is unique to the mp4-12c.

Nixon's are nearly indestructible my banks has been through hell and back and the face is all crystal, out side of a few scratches it still looks pretty good.

Actually, it's a Nixon that has been the problem. I've had to replace the crystal at least 4 times on the Ticket, which is my everyday daily watch. The last time, I sent it in through a local retailer in January and just got it back a week ago. In a single week, it already has a couple of scratches on the crystal.

Nice looking watch but I'd say calling them "quality" is a stretch and "nearly indestructible" is nowhere near how I would describe my experience with them. Customer service is a joke as well. I called them to inquire about my watch that they've had for seven months and was told that they couldn't locate the work order and to call the store. This was after the store had already sent it back twice because it was not repaired properly the first two times.

Nixon Ticket... Square face, rice bead bracelet.

Are you dead set on a square face? That's the tricky part in finishing a semi-formal watch that's also nearly indestructible.

It's really nothing wrong with the watch, only that it's got a mineral crystal.

If you don't want scratches, get a watch with a sapphire crystal. If you dont mind polishing out scratches, get one with a plastic/acrylic crystal.

mineral crystals are really the worst of both worlds. THey pick up scratches and you can't polish them out. Only benefit is when they break, they don't shatter and tend to break in big clumps of glass....but that "pro" is outweighed by the cons.

Try a 54-30. Baygirl bought me one, and it has been pretty solid for me...I love it!

hahah no doubt.

I work at a car shop so I regularly wear an Oris TT1 Skeleton with the rubber strap. Got the metal one too but never wear it with it.

Got another 2(montblanc, Dior Haute Joillaire) for when I wear a suit or ball out for the night.
