Well I have had a massive clear out this week.

Sold a lot of watches that just weren't getting worn. Time to buy some that I have been wafting on for a while.

Mostlikely will add a

Graham and a Chopard GT, been talking to one of my dealer about a new Hublot King Power but he can't give me the discount I need yet. Dunno what else to get.

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u280/watchdepot/Hublot/king%20power%20all%20black/P1010021.jpg

I sold a few good watches I am sure I will miss them soon enough:

The one that I probably won't be able to replace if I wanted to is the Panerai 194, its a rare watch, but just not one I wear enough to keep.

Where do you "sell off" your watches? lol

Not sure what your criteria is for a watch, but I've always found the Hublots too large and loud for my tastes, but again maybe its cause I don't have the baller cash to spend on one :D

A friend who's also a watch lover, picked up a Port-Royal Zenith down in vega after winning at the slots one night... not bad for $40 worth in the $1 wheel of fortune machines

I think that was a stunning watch

also, that Pani is gorgeous, I'd keep it

I also really like the Tudor's Aeronaut & Glamour lines... In fact, the last time I looked at the Classic line at a store in Montreal, I could have sworn the Tudor's bands are nicer than the Jubilee and Oyster bracelets...

The Panerai was big and clunky and a bit strange. Also a watch that price should have proprietary movement. The Hublots aren't for everyone. They wear very well though, much better than in pictures. I had a RG and Carbon one that I just sold that to be honest was a bit to flashy, I like the design and the power series has some serious complications. The flat black I think makes it a bit unique and I think more understated than other watches that size. Because of the black it wears much smaller than it is.

I like the Zenith dress watch line. One of the watches on my list it El Primero, but I ty to keep myself at 2 very dress watches at a time.

Tag Heuer got caught with their "dick in the vacuum cleaner" with that movement. They made a big press release claiming they had designed the movement "in house" when it turns out they had bought the movement design from Seiko (not that it's a bad movement, but it's certainly not designed by Tag).

http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=336032

It was posted on a watch forum and caused so much controversy, that the head of Tag made an account and admitted they shouldn't have claimed it was designed by them and it was, in fact, a Seiko movement they are re-branding.

Yea I read about it this week, it's actually redesigned but based on the Seiko TC78 which they bought the IP for, so I wouldn't call it a rebrand. But I wouldn't call it a fully new in-house design either haha.

Okay I've got it narrowed down to three watches, Tissot, Seiko and Oris..

Opinions? I like the Tissot / Oris because of the automatic movement, I love the look of the Seiko.. Also, I prefer the deployant clasps on the Tissot/Oris

The Tissot:

The Seiko:

I have the same Oris minus mine isn't the skeleton. The watch is actually really comfortable to wear day to day. I actually think it is the nicest day to day watch I have ever seen. The entire watch isn't heavy and I am still really happy that I went for the rubber band!

EDIT: On looks alone I might be tempted to go for the Tissot. As a brand I like Oris a lot more.

12-19-2009, 02:44 AM
The movement on the the tissot is the newer ETA (for Tissot only) which is designed to be more price conscious. As so the back window is just a tiny circle, the oris and seiko have a full clear back :)

For me... its all about price point

I'm certain that the Tissot & Seiko are not nearly as expensive as the Oris skeleton...

For starters, I've no idea what eta put in the Tissot, and I'm not a fan of the Kenetic Seikos, but rather their spring drive.

If I was to buy a Japanese for lets say >500 but lss than 1K, I'd look at buying an Orient automatic instead. If more... then perhaps the Seiko Springdrive, however is it worth $2500? I think so, but most probably don't :D

I really like Oris, but have yet to buy one... they are nice, they have sturdy cases, use ETA 7750s for chronos, 2824-a2s for most standards, or just parts of it...

On the other hand, I'm a bigger fan of the Hamilton Kahki series watches, and they can be had, especially online, for less than half of an Oris...

If I were to buy an Oris for >2500, I just wouldn't... so many other options, such as getting into Tag (which I prefer slightly to Oris), Omega, Mont Blanc, Longines, to maybe even Tudor & IWCs on sale etc..

That being said... there are other amazing companies such as Mido, part of ETA family, who make fantastic watches at great values... you just have to look online for them. (I like CYMA as well)

a COSC tested Chronometer for 1K.... you just can't beat that. In fact I may just put one on order!

Be careful with the newer Oris watches. The Chronos are still using ETA 7750 but some of the other models are using Selita based movements instead of ETA 2824's. There have been quite guys on the watch forums that opened the back of a new Oris and found a Selitta movement

Price wise the cheapest is the Seiko followed by the Oris and then the Tissot.

r3ccOs
12-19-2009, 01:20 PM
& nothing wrong with Selitta... but I'd rather have a ETA/Valjoux deffinately...

Again in regards to hamilton.. its unfortunate that they don't have a larger brand presence here in Canada.. They bring forward value & quality that is to me, truely unscene with most store brand watches

http://www.classybrand.com/watches/watch_fs+watch-12611-brand-Hamilton-pid-H70655723.asp

Bulova actuality may be the only other American brand watch that does have some great value for dollar, but for some reason they are like Invicta who happen to try to sell a brand to all levels of consumer, which I just think tarnishes their name.

I wouldn't spend $1600 on an Accutron, but I possibly would for for a NOS tuning fork from the late 60's

In fact... why aren't more of you all looking @ vintage watches? There are defiantely some diamonds in the rough out there, and with some simple maintenance, they can keep very good time.

Seriously? I wouldn't spend more than $400 on a Tissot... just me, its not worth that kind of cash for a watch that is on the low end of the spectrum of Swatch's monolithic group.

They've definately try to establish themselves more in the world of sports timing in the last few years, to increase exposure... but they are still Tissot.

I can almost gaurantee that the Oris is a better watch, probably even things such as case materials etc..

for something >2500 I love Omegas. One thing that I hate about buying a watch over $2000 is that there are usually lots replicas out there. I like how Oris isn't as well known.

12-19-2009, 03:57 PM
I personally think that though Oris makes a nice product, that they aren't a status watch, though they seem to intent to market themselves as. Its almost the same mutual distate I have for Tag... They spend more on marketing and placement than they do on being innovative.

Seiko Spring Drive might be the best movement ever... But as its not swiss it'll never be received as well as it deserves.

I have been looking for a Hamilton divers and today I found this on a local site, used but in mint condition with the original box, papers, both bands and the tool.

Very large, on the heavy side but very nice fitment. The black numbers make it a little difficult to see in different lighting conditions.

Hey guys, just as a heads up, looks like amazon is having a great sale on Invicta watches.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_p_8_3?rh=n%3A377110011%2Cp_4%3AInvicta%2Cp_8%3A598270011&bbn=377110011&ie=UTF8&qid=1261590803&rnid=598266011

A reasonably credible brand, which makes some really nice watches for a great price at these up to 80% off some of them.

I'd say a reasonably credible brand as well... They use all sorts of movements, ranging from Japanese Myota (great movement) to ETA ebauche's etc..

I've seen some great prices on their Divers (rolex sub homage's) w/ ETA 2824-A2's for less than a couple hundred.. built with a solid case and sometimes even saphire crystal.

I still wouldn't buy one however... I'd probably stick with a Seiko Monster/Orient instead

This is one of the ones your referring to I believe, 80% off!

That 9937 is the only Invicta worth looking at, and only because of the ETA movement. However, if you look closely at the side opposite the crown you'll find "invicta" embossed on the side of the case...yuck. The Miyota movements used in their even lower end watches are garbage...the second hand sweep, if you could even call it that, looks like its having a seizure as it stumbles around the dial doing the funky chicken. The 70 - 80% off prices are also laughable simply because not a single Invicta would ever sell if the old Sport-Chek promotion tactic wasn't used.

I'd take a Seiko over an Invicta any day of the week.

It was a great watch, and I regretted selling it the moment I handed it over at the postal outlet for shipment to the new owner.

Nice watch. I picked up one of Bill's custom built MKII Stingray's back in the spring.

I think that's cool....

Picked up myself a limited edition Omega today from a fellow Beyonder.

Some collectors say "you should never wear a limited edition".

Whats the point of having it sitting in a box on a shelf....enjoy the watch, wear it!

I have an Orient 3 star which I picked up second hand for next to nothing, and it is pretty much +15 secs a day unregulated...

Its fantastic, period.

It has their class 469 movement, which is to be in the same class as other 21600bph movements such as the seiko 7S26, the "Miyotoa" and there are comparisons where its claimed to be a better design than the 2824 ETA

It all depends on the ladies taste, age etc., this will determine the watch.

I bought my wife a Longines Dolcevita and she loves it. Not an everyday watch but she likes to wear it on special occasions.

Longines L5.155.6.16.6

$4500 - $5000

Lug width on the MKII Stingray is 22mm. The watch is definitely one of my favorites. It took me awhile to find this watch mostly due to limited quantities and long wait list with MKII. Seemed like they were only producing a handful of these watches every few months. lol.

Nice watch! Clean and sleek. Mind to tell how much did that cost?

Did you go to the Movado Outlet store by any chance? They have some sweet deals if you go at the right time.

Not a fan of the Ebel brand though... But that's just me.

Haha, thanks, I love that watch. Yea went to the Movado outlet. For anybody going to Vegas and into watches, you MUST check that place out.

I paid $515 with tax for that Movado, $900 with tax for the Ebel and my mom paid $2400 for the Ebel. I can't even get the Movado by itself for what I paid for both those watches. The store has 70% off everything inside it. My uncle and dad and family friends also got some watches too. I think in my party, we got something like 10 watches, 3 Movados, 3 Ebels and 4 Concords and it was under $15k for everything for sure. Retail on my moms watch was $8000 iirc.

We went to the Movado retail store in the Venetian and it was $1600 for the exact same watch I got. And than we went to some other watch store in the Venetian, $2500 for the Ebel, exact same watch.

Yah same, and even over seas, its hard to get them a low enough prices and given that you can easily negotiate 15% - 40% off watches here in Calgary (given the brands), I buy mine in Calgary.

The TAG SLR was going for less than $2K CDN. Exchange was 1.05 when I was there about 3 weeks ago.

The prices were 40% off MSRP and for the day I was there, there was an additional 20% select watches including the SLR.

For Seiko's, there was a coupon for 25% on the Premium outlet website.

dont you just pay for the GST when you bring something over the limit back?

benyl
01-07-2010, 02:34 PM
Yes, and you only pay on the portion above what you are allowed.

So if you are allowed $400 and the goods are $600, you only pay tax on $200 which is $10.

psycoticclown

You do have to pay the GST... if you declare it haha. Which I didn't. I just wore my Ebel in, gave the Movado to my brother and put the Ebel box in my friends luggage. So even if they searched me, I could easily say the watch I had before.

It doesn't quite work that way. If they suspect you bought the watch in the US, then you have to prove you either bought it in Canada, or that the duty has been paid on it. They will pull the serial # from you watch and find out where the watch was sold.....if the serial # isn't registered in their system as having the duty paid, you will get dinged, along with a fine.
