I am thinking about getting one for my car, any suggestions on a good brand? How much do they go for and do they actually significantly prevent speeding tickets?

Yes, they are very valuable.. I love them to death.. personally i would not go with a cheap one because it will just instill confidence and end up getting you busted in the long run.. My two favorites are either the Bel rx65 or the Escort 8500 x50. They are currently one of the better radar detectors on the market, equal with the overpriced Valentine 1 and the right behind the Brand new Escort 9500i With GPS.(just in features not in performance) But i don't think not having false alarms is worth the extra price.....

Sooo.. long story short i would go with the Bel rx65 or Escort 8500 x50.. or if you want to go a little cheaper the Bel 995 is also a decent choice. Just please avoid the Cobra/whistler cheapo thing.

If you think about it.. if it saves you from even one large ticket, it payed for its self..

But like anything make sure you do your homework.. I would recommend http://www.radarbusters.com/

If you want to know anything at all including any of the Built in stuff.. feel free to give me a pm and i will try to explain anything.

Ditto on Radarbusters, dude does his homework for you.

I've got the Escort 8500 and it's saved me a few times, but it seems to have a lot of false alarms which I don't mind since i'm lead footed.

but ya just have to remember where the false alarms are....and it depends if the false alarms are a X band....cause with the passport 8500 you can shut it off when in city mode, just remember to turn it to automatic or highway when not cauze in Lethbridge here they dont do X bands, they are just motion doors and whatnot

A radar detector will do next to nothing for you in the city. Save your money or buy a laser jammer.

They have a new one!
The Escort 9500i. It has the ability to mark points with GPS and all the goodies in it.

The reviews are only mixed though.
