BMW engineers test final version of mini-SUV
German automaker BMW previewed its upcoming X3 compact utility vehicle earlier this year at the Detroit auto show, with its xActivity concept. Now, engineers are testing final prototypes in Europe, in preparation for the start of production late this year at the Magna-Steyr factory in Graz, Austria.
The X3 shares some suspension and powertrain components with the regular 3-Series compacts, and will adapt its all-wheel driveline from the 325xi wagon.
The X3 will reach U.S. dealers early next year, probably as a 2005 model. It will be marketed as a smaller sibling to the X5, with prices starting at less than $40,000 u.s.
